Birding this morning was quite productive at Rapids Lake MVNWR. I covered the
1/2 mile loop trail south of the visitor's center, the Rapids Lake trail from
the visitor's center to just north of the 3rd outlet channel, and a portion of
the Carver Loop trail at the north end of the unit from the end of the Rapids
Lake trail. I turned around as the Carver Loop trail began running along the
west/east flowing creek that borders the north side of the unit. Activity was
greatest from Carver Rapids(Minnesota River) to just south of the first outlet
channel and north of the 2nd outlet channel all the way to the north edge of
the unit. Lincoln's Sparrow were quite numerous today, and there were likely
more than what I counted especially along the Carver Loop trail. Rapids Lake
itself was covered in pelican. The complete list of birds is below(not all
species counted).
