[NTG-context] wasy symbols

2006-06-21 Thread Hans van der Meer
I need one of the wasy symbols, the check mark to be exact.

Now I add:
\usemodule[symb-was]

and this allows me to type set the mark with:
WaldiSymbol = \WaldiSymbol {8}

but although the module file defines:
 \definesymbol [checked] [\WaldiSymbol  {8}]

I cannot do something like
\checked
because \checked is an undefined control sequence.

What I am missing?

I do not think so.

And on second thought: not even \write18 will work always, because
whether or not TeX can write a file (in a subdir or even in the
local directory) depends in part on settings in texmf.cnf that
are not visible outside TeX.

Re: [NTG-context] Test for displaying a header

2021-08-28 Thread Wolfgang Schuster via ntg-context

Fabrice,

there is difference between putting something on the first page
regardless of the number of pages in your document or do something when
your document contains only a single or more pages.

When you have a header or title which is always placed on the first page
(but not on the following pages) you have to options.

    1. Check the current page when to header is placed which can be
done with \doif{\pagenumber}{1}{...}

    2. Disable the header on the first page (\setupheader[state=high])
and place your own title as a regular element in the running text.

A case where you have to number the number of total pages is when you
try to show the page counter in the form "Page x of y" for 2 or more
pages. In this case you have to check against the value for the total
number of pages which can be done with
\doifnot{\totalnumberofpages}{1}{...}.

Below are two examples which show how the header/title placement works.

 start example 1
\startsetups [header]
    \startframed [width=max,height=max]
    First page header
    \stopframed
\stopsetups

\startsetups [footer]
    Page \userpagenumber\ of \lastuserpagenumber
\stopsetups

\setupheadertexts
  [\doif{\pagenumber}{1}{\directsetup{header}}]

\setupfootertexts
  [\doifnot{\totalnumberofpages}{1}{\directsetup{footer}}]

\starttext
\dorecurse{12}{\samplefile{lorem}\par}
\stoptext
 stop example 1

 start example 2
\startsetups [header]
    \setupheader[state=high]
    \startframed [width=max,height=3cm]
    First page header
    \stopframed
    \blank
\stopsetups

\startsetups [footer]
    Page \userpagenumber\ of \lastuserpagenumber
\stopsetups

\setuppagenumbering
  [location=none]

\setupfootertexts
  [\doifnot{\totalnumberofpages}{1}{\directsetup{footer}}]

[NTG-context] upload

2023-05-27 Thread Hans Hagen via ntg-context

Hi,

I uploaded a new lmtx. Apart from the modules installer (that Hraban has
to check) and subtle improvements in math (we're now in tweaking
penalties mode) there are a few changes:

- The endstrut in framed got lost but is back again; there is now alao a
location=inline option.

- Single character math as in "text $x$ text" will from now on behave
kind of like "text~x$ text" but that ~ always felt kind of weird anyway.
Tests on large documents with plenty math and single char cases shows
that it works quite ok and in most cases the paragraph will have the
same number of lines (single char moves have little impact).

- The \lastlinefit (etec) feature is now controlled by the "fit" option
in \setupalign etc; i'm still pondering how to control the orphan
penalty feature that has been around for a while now but never really
configured) and if we should have a decent default for that (like
\orphanpenalties 2 150 100 ).

- Math formula number placement (as well as alignment sinside narrower)
has been made a bit more robust and we added some placement options that
will be discussed in the (by now 1739 page thick) upcoming math manual.

You really don't want to know how many combinations we had to check.

In an upcoming release there might also be some new text related
tweaking features as side effect of the math tweaks which leads to some
experiments with the par builder (so again we got sidetracked).

Hi Pablo,
I am on Windows 10 and using Firefox 119 with default PDF.js.
I made a completely new profile to check and the issue exists there too.
Though after testing a bit I realized that the white lines appear on
specific zoom levels and disappear on others.
White lines appear on sumatra too but on a specific zoom level.
There are now some bottom white lines too on some zoom levels.
Okay the issue seems to be happening on all pdf files regardless of whether
it was made from context or not. The black background just allows me to
notice it.
Thank you for checking.

Hmm, that's a great idea. But I can't seem to get a minimal to work
with https://context-on-web.eu:

   \definefontfallback[SymbolFB]
  [file:symbola.otf]
  [0x00300-0x003FF,0x02100-0x02800,0x1F000-0x2] % look up the
   right
   Unicode ranges!
  [check=no,force=no]

   \definetypeface [myfonts] [rm] [serif] [times] [default]
   [fallbacks=SymbolFB]

   \starttext
   \utfchar{0x02460}
   \stoptext

The above just prints the vanilla character '1'. That might be because
the online editor doesn't have access to the font. So I tried compiling
the above locally with the Symbola.otf file in the same directory and
same problem.

[NTG-context] Re: Does ConTeXt still support ePub output?

2024-08-24 Thread Keith McKay
When I was preparing my wife's books I used Sigil to tweak the xhtml files
from the epub exported from LibreOffice. One can produce epub2 or epub3
versions from Sigil and was easy to use. We wanted to produce an epub to
the standard which could be read on apple books, the kobo and the kindle. I
had to adjust the xhtml files since none of them implemented the epub
standard exactly so I ended up preparing three different versions. However,
apple, kobo, and kindle documented where they differed from the standard so
it wasn't too onerous a job. The Kindle version was prepared from an epub
using kindle previewer.
Best wishes
Keith McKay

That site is used for uploading modules by authors. I never thought
about users trying to learn about existence of modules via that site.

I removed the link.

Do you want to say that the module gets removed next time when you run
first-setup.bat? If that is the case, it should be fixed. Updating
works for me and also keeps the modules up to date.

> I'm always using (on windows)
> first-setup.bat --keep

I would advise you against using the --keep option unless there are
some other/strong reasons to do so. But you shouldn't need keep just
for the sake of a potential bug.

I would need to check again what exactly --all does. But --modules=all
should install all modules and --modules=t-tikz should be sufficient
to keep that module. However I don't know what happens if you use
--modules=t-somethingelse next time. Maybe that removes the modules
that you installed previously as it expects the complete list of
modules. I need to check.

Well in my view name and code point are both valid and useful
accesses (and I wouldn't trust names too much).

Beside this:
xetex has (for non-legacy fonts) primitives for all accesses: by
char (unicode), slot and name.

luatex hasn't, here the only (primitive) access are commands like
\char which expect a number; the name field of a character is marked
as "unused" in the manual.

Neither has the generic fontloader imho some suitable primitive
command for name access. All the examples in the generic folder uses
numbers or direct input: e.g. \Uchar"1D49D or \Uradical "0 "221A

So it is imho quite natural that people who write code and packages
expect the access by \char + code point to work. Why should I bother
with a (perhaps font specific) glyph name if I can simply look up a
clear code point number in a table?

And if I got it right you are reserving a specific space to have
stable numbers internally, so you are caring about numbers too ;-)

> the main issue is that there are fonts that use private > 0x space

I don't know. Wikipedia says that code2000 uses plane 15 but I
didn't check.

Some questions concerning XML export:

1. Normally, with \setupbackend[export=yes], Ctx creates "Main-export"
directory containing (among others) Main-raw.xml, and Main-tag.xhtml and
some subdirs.

no, because then we also need to check for files with that name already
present etc etc

Is there a way to tell Ctx to produce just one XML file with a
prescribed name which wouldn't be placed in any subdir?
In my case - to produce "Main.xml" (instead of
"Main-export/Main-raw.xml"), other files to be omitted?

no, because they also server as check

2. Is there a way to export user parameters used in \section?

In my case: \startsection[title={Sec},MyPar=MyVal] uses user parameter
"MyPar" with value "MyVal", but "MyPar" is not transmitted into XML;

the goal is to have

which would allow some filtering when reprocessing that XML.

there are soem options to pass properties (probably also demonstrated in
examples)

- Or is there another way, like enclosing into a user tag:

   \starttag[MyTag]
     \startsection[title={Sec},MyPar=MyVal]
   \input knuth
     \stopsection
   \stoptag

indeed you can define your own tags

which would export into:

   MyPar="MyVal">

as it is impossible to fulfil every possible scneario the export is just
that ... an export ... one can always postprocess the xml

I should have checked, yes. I did, but I oversaw this. I admit, it's
all my fault (lucky me that I don't know the differences between the
two orthographies well enough).

There have recently been some more changes (for example Hungarian now
includes way more extensive patterns, and Lithuanian and Latvian have
been added, but there's no support for the two languages in ConTeXt
anyway). Just FYI.

(Just out of curiosity - why has { "agr", "hyph-grc", "ancient greek"
} been commented out? My next question to Thomas would be how you
handle those patterns in pdftex, but I won't ask that.)

My fear is that there could be some tiny difference in that
reimplementation of hyphenation algorithm. Most words hyphenate
properly and equally in both engines. This is the first
counter-example that I have seen. But that might be something for Taco
to check.

Context is well suited for good typography and technical
graphics. It's maybe not the perfect tool for DTP like
magazines with very fancy layout. However it's no problem
to include the graphics you create with inkscape, etc.

I don't know about magazines created with ConTeXt. But you
can check the manuals at

there's also a link to the sources.

I tried following this instruction:
http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Gnuplot#Unix_or_Mac

But then I got:
-
$ ./prepare

./prepare: 47: aclocal: not found

Some part of the preparation process failed.
Please refer to INSTALL for details.
-

And in "INSTALL" and "INSTALL.gnu" the first step is to do
$ ./configure
but I only have a configure.in and configure.vms -file.
I'm quite confused.
So I installed it from the debian-repositories (for sure without any
context-implementation), but you could just tell me, how I can make your
version work. :-)

There are still people trying to run TikZ on plain TeX with the Knuth

Hm, I need something that *all* eTeX engines provide that I can check.
And these seem to have met that requirement. I really don't want to
write a huge cascade of if-s to test for different engines.

Are the source files and test cases in a Git / Mercurial / Fossil / whatever
repository somewhere? It would be easy enough to set up an automated daily
check to see if there had been a change and then trigger a fresh build.

It doesn't even need to be that integrated - just a check on the latest intel
binary and if that has been touched then trigger a download and local compile.

If Keith's scripting skills aren't up to it then I could do it and then
developer sign and upload the resulting binary to OneDrive or similar.

An excellent idea. To cut the work into bite-sized pieces: over the
coming weeks, I will post these files on the list one by one and
solicit specific improvements / check for befuddlement. First, though,
I have some questions:

1. I assume the man pages are created from the XML files, and we
should edit the XML files -- is this correct?

2. Is the XML-to-man script included in the distribution? That would
(a) make it easier to check the result of an edit, and (b) make it
easier to find the answer to question 3 for myself. ;-)

3. Is there a key to specify bold and italic in the XML? (\fB...\fP
and \fI...\fP in the man page.) Or, if you want to keep it semantic:
are (\fB) and (\fI, or also \fB) supported?

4. I really really like the groupings of the flags in
the XML files. This useful grouping doesn't show up in the man pages,
however. Perhaps the end of a subcategory could correspond to

.TP

in the man pages?

5. Lastly, I think it would be good to include a standard SEE ALSO
block at the end of each man page, to list all the scripts we have man
pages for. This will make it easier for users to discover the man
pages. Example below. If such a block could be supported, I would be
happy to write it.

As a beginner myself and typesetting in Portuguese I can tell

And maybe not in the beginners manual but I think there

after installing you should check if the *.exe of perl and ruby is in
the default path. you can easily check in the command line by

To get the context scripts running they should also be in the default

I see.

Well, then Context could not benefit from "incremental" builds with just one
run instead of 4 to 5 runs. But I get the idea.

>> $ texexec --pdf --tempdir=tmp --output=out/project.pdf project

Then, is there a list of files that are automatically created by Context (not
mentioning files that are manually created as part of TeX output functions and
such)?

The prime aspect of my question is to have a reasonable list of file names that
shouldn't be version controlled with the source code. Our scripts automatically
check for unknown files and mark our documents tainted if the local version is
not consistent with the repository (say, completely committed and updated). If
I could instruct context to put all temporary files into a separate directory,
I could simply put "tmp/*" to the ignore list, and that's it.

Maybe for this task, --purge is reasonable enough. I'll give it a try.

Thanks, Hans!

2008-01-12 Thread Carsten Fechtmann
Hi Aditya,

thanks for taking the time to answer this. And yes, I looked at what
ConTeXt has already built in.

On 12.01.2008 at 18:44 wrote Aditya Mahajan:

> I haven't looked at your code below. First check if one the in-built
> stuctural environments of ConTeXt do what you want.

As a matter of fact, I am using the following for all the heavy stuff
(implementing that in LaTeX is/was a REAL pain)

\definesynonyms[Issue][issues][\IssueText][\IssueDate]
\setupsynonyms[Issue][criterium=all]

\Issue[1]{Issue 1:}{Some Date}
\Issue[2]{Issue 2:}{\currentdate}

and if I just put the values in by hand, it works like a champ. Sorted
list and all.   ;-D

Took me less than 5 minutes to implement (read: find in the manual).
Just gonna _love_ ConTeXt for that!

Now, with such a nice success (and because I have much more "counter"
stuff on the way)
I was feeling lucky ...
and spent the next 5 hours figuring out / searching on the web / going
over the source
how to have the "number" for each issue placed automatically, every
time a new issue date is set.

Yes, sure, I could just _write_ that in, but then I would have to
check myself,
which number is exactly the one I need, and not have the computer do
it for me.
But, hey where is the fun in that? ;-)

What this all burns down is, that I /really/ would like to understand,
how I can pass a value from a counter as (constant) argument to a self-
defined function. As that seems to be the core of the matter/problem
here.

Any suggestions?

Cheers
Carsten

Hi Alain,

Yes that's what I mean, spellchecking any content which is not a control
sequence. That should include things like section titles and footnotes.
Though I'm afraid that might be asking for too much.

I'd rather not make it part of my editor (I use vim) and have it as an
extra step which I can add to something like a Makefile.

Do I need to install all of Libreoffice to gain access to the files you
mention or is there an easier way?

Free, not open source.

No. With working with ConTeXt, I'm using a batch file which normally

compiled, the batch reopens the PDF in the viewer.

Which other features are essential for your choice?

Handy work - after some time of using the prog, you see how much "handy"
the program is, but hard to say which feature is essetial or most
important; "total handyness" is the goal.

I would probably change this PDF viewer just if synctex worked WELL with
the source (and in my case - I'm using Lua in ConTeXt widely to generate
the PDF, so in most cases synctech navigates me badly to the source).

Best regards,

Lukas

E.g. I’m working with:
- Preview.app (Mac)
  Default on MacOS, fast & easy. No JS, bad forms support, updates
"sometimes". Usable as a previewer, not as a PDF toolbox.
- Adobe Reader DC (Mac)
  I use it only to check forms or as reference. Unusable GUI.
- Acrobat Pro 9 (Mac)
  Was my workhorse, but works on MacOS Mojave only partly; slow &
crash-prone; no updates. Can check PDF/X<4 and convert colors.
- PDF Studio Pro (on Mac & Linux)
  Bought to replace AcroPro9; JS support broken; slow startup; no
updates. Can check PDF/X, A, UA and convert colors.
  Ok with forms, but doesn’t support LiveCycle forms (deprecated, but
used by German boards).
- Qpdfview (Linux)
  Fast and easy; reliably updates.
- PDF.js (Browser or Atom)
  Is said to do SyncTeX (never tried). Easy, but slow. Updates.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but this how I understand TFM font and currect
state of tex engines (actually pdftex, xetex and luatex):
1. to use any font in tex one need a TFM file (file name = fontname.TFM),
that file actually contain informationabout font, not how exatly glyphs
are constructed;
2. when [original] tex read a document file it searches for TFM and VF
files, read them and write DVI file with information about that files;
3. after that user can send file to printer or publisher to print it on
printer. As I understand the purpose of checksum was to be sure that
publisher or printer would use exatly the same fonts as user. If user
converts DVI file to PS/PDF one on his/she computer using dvips or
dvipdfm* the checksum mostly useless, assuming files are not corrupted.

Nowadays pdftex, xetex and luatex are widely used and most time users
generate PDF files on the same computer they write documents, send PDF
files which have they own mechanism to check font consistency.

But still there are [plenty] DVI files around, as well as luatex engine
might generate DVI file. The convertion to PS/PDF is performed by
dvips/dvipdfm* programs, that's ok. But what about luatex with DVI
output?

My conclusion:
1. if PDF output is only interesting then it is Ok, ignore that message,
because font information is already in PDF and PDF programs should deal
with it;
2. if DVI output is concerned then luatex _must_ be consistent with
pdftex (also can write DVI files), which, imho (don't check), takes care
about both TFM and VF checksums.

I do not know what your example is (but I’m curious: can I see this
somewhere ?).

In my case, the long time needed is to check if a new object does not
intersect with any other object: so when I try to find the maximum size of
the 1000th object at a given position, I have to check with the 999 others…
I do this with « intersectiontimes ». And so on for the 10001th… I have a
course try to find solutions to gain time, like using the coordinate of a
new object: when the coordinate of a new object is chosen, I do not need to
check potential intersections with objects far away… but surprisingly (to
me) this take more time than to blindly check with every object.

This is an algorithmic problem more than a ConTeXt/Metapost one… but I you
have suggestions, I’m sure I can learn !

Below is minimal code. (Just to be clear, this code work, even for 20K
objects.)
Thanks.

\starttext
  \startMPpage
  path Obj[] , ObjTemp ;
  pair ObjPos , Inter ;
  numeric NObj ;
  % Change herte "NObj" to a big numer (says 20K)
  NObj := 100;
  numeric Danger, MaxSize ;

  % Draw an initial object of random shape and random size ;
  Obj[1]:= fullsquare randomized .001in
  scaled (uniformdeviate(.5)*1in)
  shifted (uniformdeviate(5)*1in,uniformdeviate(5)*1in) ;
  Obj[1] := curved ( Obj[1] );
  fill Obj[1] withcolor cyan randomized (.2,1.5);
  draw Obj[1] withcolor black randomized (.2,1.5);

  for i=2 upto NObj :
  Danger := 0;
% Choose a position for the object :
  ObjPos := (uniformdeviate(5)*1in,uniformdeviate(5)*1in) ;
  % Choose a form :
  Obj[i] := fullsquare randomized .01in ;
  Obj[i] := curved ( Obj[i] );
  % Choose a scale so the object does not interact with any other object:
for j=1 upto 50:
   MaxSize := (j*.01in) ;
ObjTemp := Obj[i] scaled MaxSize shifted ObjPos ;
   %draw ObjTemp withcolor magenta ;
   % Check if this temporary object intersect with any other object :
   for k=1 upto (i-1):
string trace ;
 Inter := Obj[k] intersectiontimes ObjTemp ;
 if (xpart Inter) <> -1 : Danger := 1; fi ;
 if Danger=1: MaxSize := ((j-1)*.01in) ; fi;
 exitif Danger = 1;
   endfor;
   exitif Danger = 1;
  endfor ;
  Obj[i] := Obj[i] scaled MaxSize shifted ObjPos ;

  fill Obj[i] withcolor cyan randomized (.2,1.5);
  draw Obj[i] withcolor black randomized (.2,1.5);
  endfor;
  \stopMPpage
\stoptext

So after some hours of computation, this code above breaks for me if the
number of objects, NObj in my code, is too large. Of course, perhaps an
error occurs at some point and is not caused directly by the number of
objects, because according to what has been said in this thread this should
not be is not a problem. I put below the log. If somebody has a hint in
which direction I should look… thanks !

Fabrice.
