[NTG-context] ConTeXt header oddities

2010-08-18 Thread Peter McFarlane
Hi, hoping someone can help me with these couple of oddities I notice when
processing some ConText documents:

1. Bodymatter and appendix header logo doesn't get printed on the last page of
the section.

Here are the relevant sections of the document:

\def\HeadLogo%
{\externalfigure[clean.png][height=20pt]}
...
\startfrontmatter
% logo on page of frontmatter - this one seems to work for all pages of
frontmatter
\definelogo[aitlogo][header][right][state=start,command=\HeadLogo]
...
\stopfrontmatter
\startbodymatter
% logo on page of bodymatter - this one puts the logo in the header of all but
the last page of bodymatter
\definelogo[aitlogo][header][right][state=start,command=\HeadLogo]
...
\stopbodymatter
\startappendices
% logo on page of appendix - this one also puts the logo in the header of all
but the last page of appendix
\definelogo[aitlogo][header][right][state=start,command=\HeadLogo]
...
\stopappendices

Very strange and reproducible. Originally, I was using TeXLive 2005 when I
inherited the project...
since then I have upgraded to TeXLive 2009 but no change in behaviour.

2. There is _always_ a blank page at the end of the document, no matter how
many pages there are,
an extra one gets printed, with header but minus logo in the header, as
described in 1 above

Any help much appreciated,

Regards,

Pete

I'm running Debian unstable, and would like to install a somewhat
recent version of ConTeXt IV. I was under the impression the steps
listed in http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Debian_installation would
accomplish this. I'm also considering installing the minimals
instead, but it would be nice to be able to apt-get a recent ConTeXt
if possible. I'd like to keep LaTeX on my system as well, and would
like to avoid too much redundancy (small 16GB SSD).

John

That what I ended up doing while ago (actually, my master copy is on the

I do, but I seldom bother about fonts in other applications.

Anyways, for now I have added a simlink from ~/.fonts to
~/texmf/fonts/opentype/data and everything seems to work.

Also, when I use fonts in tex, I make sure that I have a copy in
texmf-fonts as I don't want surprised when fonts change (I probably had
too many bad experiences). Also, I don't want to enter a font mess when

moving to a new system.

adapting the sorter is no option

grep for "-- uppercase after lowercase" in sort-lan ... you can define a
sort vector that deals with it

May I chime in here? Hans, a couple of weeks ago, I reported a similar problem:
none of the fonts in my personal texmf-trees ends up in the database. I can
still reproduce the problem:

luatools AGaramondPro-Regular.otf
/Users/tas/texmf/fonts/opentype/adobe/agaramond/AGaramondPro-Regular.otf

mtxrun --script fonts --list --all "agaramond*"

(i.e. nothing found). I can only use all these personal fonts via the file:
syntax; name: does not work. Maybe these problems are related? Something's not
quite kosher in the font database...

ah, this could be because a runtime scanned tree is not scanned for
fonts in the database; this is somewhat disputable as such a tree is not
expected to be stable i.e. files can come and go

i can look into it but now now (no time now) and only if there is no
performance penalty

it's why I would always make a local tree 'databased'

Speaking for myself (and I have only one or two small modules, so I am
not a 'big daddy'): the lettrine module is indeed in subversion locally
just as almost anything I do is these days. But I have the repository
to make sure I do not accidentally delete file and/or so I can go back

the module is my private illegitimate child, and I do not really want
other people teaching it new tricks until I am ready to kick it out of

Do you mean the source files of the module? Now I found something in
[4]. I just downloaded the source files for the manual and I could not
find anything in it.

Is there an easy way to view the source files besides downloading it or
clicking through the directories of CTAN ?

What is the reason? Because it is too much work to set it up or because
it is not wanted?

Thanks,

Paul

[NTG-context] Error in minimals beta

2010-08-18 Thread Andreas Schneider
Hi,

I sent this mail before, but it seems to have been lost on it's way to the
mailing list ... (I hope so, otherwise this might be a double post).

When I compile my current project, luatex fails with the following error:

Seems like it's not directly related to my file (which worked fine in an
older version).
In case it matters: I'm on Linux x86 currently.

Hoping for a fix,
Andreas.

Other fonts in that directory are found, font names works for all fonts

May I chime in here? Hans, a couple of weeks ago, I reported a similar problem:
none of the fonts in my personal texmf-trees ends up in the database. I can
still reproduce the problem:

luatools AGaramondPro-Regular.otf
/Users/tas/texmf/fonts/opentype/adobe/agaramond/AGaramondPro-Regular.otf

mtxrun --script fonts --list --all "agaramond*"

(i.e. nothing found). I can only use all these personal fonts via the file:
syntax; name: does not work. Maybe these problems are related? Something's not
quite kosher in the font database...

I had also noticed a similar behavior in the past with Fontin... the font
was not found in $TEXMFHOME tree. That was one of the reasons that I
started storing fonts in ~/.fonts (the other being that other applications
on Linux can also find the font).

I will try to see if I can reproduce that with the latest beta.

You need a newer ConTeXt to use the module with MkIV because it uses

I hope this is the right way to contact the authors and to submit the

There is also a mail address of the author in the source files where he

As a last remark, I would really love to see the sources and

There are some free services for free software projects as for example

The files are under revision control but there are no plans to put them

[NTG-context] polish sorting

2010-08-18 Thread Philipp Gesang
Hi,

I'm creating some sorting tables. While researching this topic I
stumbled on the Polish dictionary sorting rules: if two strings are
equal except for case then the one gets precedence that begins
lowercase.[1] (This seems to apply to the Swedish order as well but I
have no means to verify that. Apparently, my German dictionary (from
1991) follows the same rule without explicitly stating so.)

Context seems to prefer it the other way round, so I modified two
functions from sort-ini.lua to handle that; but I'm not happy with
this solution.

So my question: is there already, or could we have some mechanism
to influence the details of sorting in context?

Thanks for your help,
Philipp

Oh, I didn't know the pieces used to come about by accident... actually, by a

Well, it all depends on kerning. So 'abc' can become 'a' 'b' 'c' or 'ab'
'c' or 'a' 'bc' or 'abc' depending on the kerning pairs. IN math it
depends on the spacing of math characters.

in mkiv the text is treated as a whole and that will not change

That's rather bad news... then essentially MetaPost is a lost case for
retouching digital typography it seems. Will have to switch to Illustrator
(with the Scriptographer plugin) for these tasks. Sadly, batch processing and
TeX integration will be gone with that alternative.

so, if in mkiv you want pieces, you need to textext each snippet that you want
as such

Alright... in that case how would I make sure that all glyph positions are kept

with textext?

see mp.mplib for all those anchor points

Hi Salil,

three items I'd like to add:
  * horizontal split page layout (upper and lower parts instead of
columns),
  * asymmetric stream combinations (e.g. two streams on the left page,
another stream on the facing page), and
  * easy reprinting (i.e. a photographic reproduction as one stream on
the left and a text stream on the right page).
I've seen all of this in printed books so it would be a pity to live in
a world where the best typesetting system can't do that. Some of this I
already mentioned to Hans a while ago, maybe he remembers.

I would like to do something slightly more general: it would be nice if
columnset blocks could take their input from streams, even if the block
is not a full column (or multiple columns).

Best wishes,
Taco

Old Arabic book, essentially all early Bulaq Press books used to typeset
two books in one, one is the main book running on the body of the page,
while the other is a loosely related book running in the margins of the
page, the second book can be a commentary on the main book, but often
they just discuss the same subject with no direct correlation (not a
critical edition). I'd like to be able to reproduce such layout.

 Khaled

[NTG-context] collecting user wishes for streams related functionalities

2010-08-18 Thread Salil Sayed
Hi All,

Hans will starting looking into the development of 'streams' for mkvi soon. So
let us gather our wishes for these functions so that the interface can be well
thought of beforehand. Please respond to this thread with your wishes and I
might compile them later in one place if doing so makes sense.

To begin with here is my first wish:

Being able to flow multiple texts in parallel. A simple case is a translation
of
the same text running on opposite page while the original runs on left/right
page. In my thesis these are not translations, but correlated texts written for
different audiences. (think of levels in a CG game) So the texts need to be
designed differently.

To extrapolate this facility, if columns on one page can run such parallel
texts
then we can have multiple translations running together.

Best regards,

Salil

I always develop a kind of romantic relationship with the tools I use, I
either hate it and stop using it no matter what it can or can not do; I
hate OpenOffice and Qt, for example, and I would never, willingly use
either. On the other hand, when I love some tool I never turn my back to
it, no matter what shortcomings it might have, love is blind. I love
TeX, and though it has a horrible macro language, I keep using it.

One don't just drop his tools just because he can't, yet, figure out how
to make it do what he wants. You have to try harder, show your love,
your commitment, it will certainly pay back.

;)

Oh, I didn't know the pieces used to come about by accident... actually, by a
rather favourable accident if I may add :-)

> in mkiv the text is treated as a whole and that will not change

That's rather bad news... then essentially MetaPost is a lost case for
retouching digital typography it seems. Will have to switch to Illustrator
(with the Scriptographer plugin) for these tasks. Sadly, batch processing and
TeX integration will be gone with that alternative.

Alright... in that case how would I make sure that all glyph positions are kept
if my TeX material is, say, some complex formula? How could I find the baseline
with textext?

Sure. Similar functionality doesn't need to resort to the same implementation
:-)

Other fonts in that directory are found, font names works for all fonts
there too.

Khaled,

a while ago I was getting strange results: wanted to use roman font got bold
italic, etc. Font listing roman name and italic filename, all with several
fonts.

I just deleted the font cache folder Did the trick for the time being.

./tex/texmf-cache/luatex-cache/context/

Dunno then, it is very confusing, some fonts are found by file name and
some are not. Putting them in TEXMF tree makes them found.

Re: [NTG-context] Does Makempy still work?

2010-08-18 Thread Cedric Mauclair
Hi,

As suggested by Hans, here is an archive with the tex file I used for
the tests and the resulting "-mpgraph" PDF file (plus all the logs and
stuff). It looks OK, but when I use "pstoedit -f mpost" (v3.50 with gs
v8.70), only e, m and c from the formula are in the resulting metapost
code. I will try with pstoedit v3.45 later today. I use ConTeXt (MkIV)
from TeXlive 2010 pretest.

If anyone has enough knowledge in gs and PDF files (Luigi?) and
especially enough time, could you give it a look please? Thanks in
advance. I will send the PDF to the author of pstoedit too.

Thanks.
