RE: disabling 'connect as'

2001-09-26 Thread Kent Spencer

.. I'm a little confused as to your configuration? Are all the
   servers/workstations 2000? RunAS is a service on 2000 which
could be stopped and set to manual to start. However, if the
user has privileges to restart this does no good and why I suggest
a policy to disable. If the user has a valid account he/she
shouldn't have to use connect as or run as if you have security
set properly. The only way to stop reinfecting your servers
is to disable all shares until the users computers are virus' free
which I doubt you can achieve. Users tend to scream when they can't
get to information. Guess I need to hear more information.

Also, netdiag.exe from the RK or Support tools gives great info

RE: cannot ping by name

2001-09-11 Thread Kent Spencer

.. you may want to check your node type. h-node, p-mode, b-node etc
to see how resolution is being performed. Depending on which, the
DNS server may not even get queried. Do an ipconfig/all to see
what it is set to. If IP's are being assigned by dhcp, you'll want
to also set the node type.

. disregard. IPSec does not work with NAT. It lets you configure it

RE: Strange TCP/IP issue

.. have you checked the services to make sure DHCP client and DNS
client are running? You said it can't ping the gateway/router?
The only other thing using ping is it's address and subnet mask.
If you know other systems on the same "wire" you should be able
to ping those without subnet mask or gateway.

RE: HP to Acquire Compaq in $25B Deal

2001-09-04 Thread Kent Spencer

.. As in all mergers/acquisitions, the logistics of merging
the companies becomes a nightmare. I know Compaq struggled
with this after the Digital & Tandem acquisition. It was partly
due to the high-tech world going soft but this group I'm in
now has had 6 different managers since I've been here. The
reporting structure has changed 3-4 times. It becomes difficult
at the micro level to accomplish things.
..It it doesn't bring better products and services, we'll see another
  merger/acquisition probably.

RE: Win 2000 offline folders question

http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/source/cacheset.shtml is about
all you can do with NT 4.0 SP4. I think I'm confused because you
seem to think caching has to do with Offline Folders.

NT 4.0 there is NO cache option for files other than third party

What protocols are running on the servers and desktops? Which
network library are you using?

Hello,

One of our servers runs NT 4 and SQL 7.  Our Client machines (Win2k Pro) try to connect to the SQL server either via ODBC (in a VB app) or using Enterprise manager, they keep receiving intermittent “Timeout Expired” messages.  This didn’t happen a week ago, and AFAIK nothing has changed on the server or the client PCs.  I’ve tried restarts, SP, Hotfixes, reinstalling client software.

The client PCs are made up to Win2kPro SP2, Visual Studio 6 SP5 and SQL 2000 Client Tools
Everything on the network is 100mb Cat 5

The odd thing is I installed a fresh copy of Win2k SP1, Visual Studio 6 (no SP) the user access our VB app and never gets a “Timeout Expired” error. Grr!.  Therefore I thought ahh perhaps then its SQL that’s causing the problems, so I ripped it off my machine but I still get the same error message.

I can’t see any problems with the server, web sites access the DB fine.

Any body have any ideas.

Thanks

With wierd problems with Proliants, I use the erase utility and start from scratch
using smartstart. This will recreate new system settings. You can get all the
utilities at http://www.compaq.com/support/files/server/us/locate/20_1104.html
You said you upgraded bios but I'd run the entire RomPaq as it will update
other bios it detects. Good Luck.

Do you have anything connected to the COM ports? And you
don't have lights out or remote insight?
