[nysbirds-l] More larks, no longspurs, plus many longspur want-to-bes !
I spent ~ 3 hours this afternoon slowly driving some of Riverhead's farm roads, primarily looking for longspurs. Between the snow plows, fog, drizzle, ground water, snow drifts and a smattering of cars (all of which, going to fast for the conditions just described) I did manage to see quite a few birds. Most of these were within 4 feet of the road feeding, with many in the road proper. It simply amazes me how tolerant birds can be of a very slow passing car (blind)...especially Horned Larks, without flushing ! Totals for the day were: 1 flyover, but non-threatening, Sharp-shinned Hawk; ~ 85 Horned Larks;`~ 20 Savannah Sparrows; ~ 10 White-throated Sparrows; ~ 15 White-crowned Sparrows, ~25 Song Sparrows and ~ 15 Dark-eyed Juncos. What will the 'morrow bring ? [nysbirds-l] Long-Tailed Ducks
I observed five Long tailed ducks from the piers of the Oyster Bay Marine Center, Oyster Bay, NY. They were at the opposite site of the bay, and I was able to see and find them while using my scope. They were far in the opposite side of the bay, 3 males and two females. There were also several Red-breasted Mergansers, Greater and Lesser scouts, Bufflehead, Canada and Brant geese. -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

[nysbirds-l] Glaucous Gull and Grasshopper Sparrow continues @ Jones Beach West End...
Sam Janazzo called to report that the GRASSHOPPER SPARROW from yesterday continues as well as the GLAUCOUS GULL that was reported earlier today. Both birds are at Jones Beach West End. The GRASSHOPPER SPARROW was seen again near the turn around at West End, as you enter the parking lot. Look for foraging sparrows on both sides on the way in. It goes without saying that if you notice photographers or birders on the bird, you might want to take the back entrance into the parking lot and drive over then walk down to the location where the bird seems to favor. That way you don't flush the bird. The GLAUCOUS GULL was still being seen in the western part of the lot. Good luck if you go and many thanks to Sam for the update.
