[DL][Website] First draft of the new DL scripting
Hi all, I was busy at the weekend to clean-up the DL scripting. The new webpages are accessible here (as long as they are not published): http://ooo-site.staging.apache.org/download/test/new/index.html http://ooo-site.staging.apache.org/download/test/new/other.html Some notes before you start with checking out: 1. The current focus is on reducing complexity, better simplification and more automatism. Not the design and layout. This is nearly the same. 2. It's normal that not all links will work as it's only a part of the download area. It depends on the link itself if it's not yet working or really broken. ;-) 3. When you find errors and want to report them please make sure to browse to the following webpage to help me with some debug data: http://ooo-site.staging.apache.org/download/test/new/analyze.html Next big step is to implement the new directory structure on the mirrors. Thanks in advance for your comments. Marcus

The most recent webpage is here: http://ooo-site.staging.apache.org/download/test/other_print.html There is one change needed with the source downloads. Please use the Apache Mirrors and not dist directly for the packages. See [1]. Only for the source files, not for the hash files, right? Done. Should the language packs be mixed with the full installation sets? If so then maybe the language fields should span two rows? To have all in a single table it's easier to point the user to resp. the user has only to remember this. I'll think about the span thing. As fast solution I've deleted every second language strings and expanded the row highlighting. Dave, what do you think? Much better. Maybe the go back to the top break in the language group should be more frequent than every 10? Ah, right. With the combined table (full install, langpacks, hashes) it's still after 10 languages but actually a lot of big rows more which is indeed to much. I'll change it tomorrow. I've changed it in a way that max. 4 languages are printed and than a new sub-table header. With the most high screen resolutions nowadays this should fit. On my screen the visible part begins with Start of page and it ends with this. Marcus This seems fine to me. Nice job! Thanks :-) I was busy the last hours and have started the re-work. The reduction is already quite nice. Only 1 download.js is left. The new download_tables.js is for the new other.html file only. Also globalvars.js is smaller. I've also adjusted a bit the languages.js. And - at least for me on Linux - all is still working. :-) PS: I don't write you this to push you to something. It's just that I want to let you know that it was indeed time to do this. The reduction is really great. CU Marcus [1] http://incubator.apache.org/openofficeorg/downloads.html I'm open for opinions. Otherwise I can put it easily to the production website as the new other.html.

The report page is ready at http://wiki.apache.org/incubator/September2012 Due on Wednesday Sept. 5. I copied the June report and made some changes to https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/OOOUSERS/2012+Sept There is more to be done. Please feel free to edit. We should be discussing our graduation plans. absolutely! The report will go here: http://wiki.apache.org/incubator/September2012when that page is created. I've put a new page (empty) on the Planning Wiki containing 2 child pages -- the June report and an empty Sept placeholder. KG01 - This adds a lot of value. Ideally we could aim to align the information architecture for the categorization. This would allow users to leverage the existing knowledge when browse in each library. Any thoughts about the best way to implement making the categorised library available to the community? KG01 - it would be great to explore ways to make the open clip art more accessible/discoverable within AoO clipart view. Some social integration could enable pulling clipart into editors, or pushing an image from an editor to the open library. While we could create a plug-in, it would be a better unified ux if we integrate open clip art and local clipart in one UI. At present I'm just going through all the folders from OpenClipart.org and putting them into arbitrary folders labelled Animals, People, Transport, Food etc. This is because each contributor simply puts often unconnected files in a folder so images on OpenClipart.org are grouped by author not type (unless I'm missiong something :-) ). While there are some aggregations and an on-line indexing system on the OpenClipart.org site I haven't found it particularly easy to find things. It seems easier to me to have a folder called eg Animals with sub folders for birds, insects, mammals, perhaps with subdivisions of cartoon and realistic in each. There are png and svg versions of each image. Ideally we'll get import of svg to AOO so that these can be edited or resaved in odg or odg will develop to be fully svg compliant but I guess that is further down the development road. Once we have the categories established they could be embedded in the AOO gallery system and anyone wanting to could add to the library to complement missing items. Probably helpful for the OpenClipArt project too. There really are masses of images to sort through but a lot of duplicates - millions of pencils and pens :-) This is why a visual search of a folder called pens is probably going to be more successful than trying to search for key words. KG02 - yes, it would be great to clean this up So at the moment I propose to plough on sorting the images and hopefully when they are done someone (perhaps you kevin :-) ) Who knows more about how the UX can work with the imagescan help make it easy to integrate into the gallery. KG02 - This is an interesting consideration. When we think about social, we need to apply the social integration to the context of office productivity. I feel that social clip art is a great example of future capabilities. KG02 - I will include this scenario in the social design explorations. Once I have finished first iteration of sorting I'll send you the details so you can see what we have. KG03 - Ian, great job. Ya, reach out to me when your further along. In the interim, I'll capture a clipart social scenario. -- Ian Ofqual Accredited IT Qualifications (The Schools ITQ) www.theINGOTs.org +44 (0)1827 305940 The Learning Machine Limited, Reg Office, 36 Ashby Road, Tamworth, Staffordshire, B79 8AQ.
