NIC of br-ex with the same ip range of public address. So I want to know where

 For consumers wanting to leverage ceilometer as a telemetry service atop
 non-OpenStack Clouds or infrastructure they don't own, some edge cases
 crop up. Most notably the consumer may not have access to the hypervisor
 host and therefore cannot leverage the ceilometer compute agent on a per
 host basis.

Yes, currently such access to the hypervisor host is required, least in
the case of the libvirt-based inspector.
 
 In such scenarios it's my understanding the main option is to employ the
 central agent to poll measurements from the monitored resources (VMs,
 etc.). 

Well, the ceilometer central agent is not generally concerned with
with polling related *directly* to VMs - rather it handles acquiring
data from RESTful API (glance, neutron etc.) that are not otherwise
available in the form of notifications, and also from host-level
interfaces such as SNMP.

 However this approach requires Cloud APIs (or other mechanisms)
 which allow the polling impl to obtain the desired measurements (VM
 memory, CPU, net stats, etc.) and moreover the polling approach has it's
 own set of pros / cons from a arch / topology perspective.

Indeed.

 The other potential option is to setup the ceilometer compute agent
 within the VM and have each VM publish measurements to the collector --
 a local VM agent / inspector if you will. With respect to this local VM
 agent approach:
 (a) I haven't seen this documented to date; is there any desire / reqs
 to support this topology?
 (b) If yes to #a, I whipped up a crude PoC here:
 http://tinyurl.com/pqjgotv  Are folks willing to consider a BP for this
 approach?

So in a sense this is similar to the Heat cfn-push-stats utility[1]
and seems to suffer from the same fundamental problem, i.e. the need
for injection of credentials (user/passwds, keys, whatever) into the
VM in order to allow the metric datapoints be pushed up to the
infrastructure layer (e.g. onto the AMQP bus, or to a REST API endpoint).

How would you propose to solve that credentialing issue?

Heat cfntools is based on SSH, so I assume it requires TCP/IP connectivity
between VM and the central agent(or collector). But in the cloud, some
networks are isolated from infrastructure layer network, because of security
reasons. Some of our customers even explicitly require such security
protection. Does it mean those isolated VMs cannot be monitored by this
proposed-VM-agent?

I really wish we can figur out how it could work for all VMs but with no
security issues.

I'm not familiar with heat-cfntools, so, correct me if I am wrong :)

This devstack belongs to Juno.
I have written a cinder-volume driver for my client backend.
I want to contribute this driver in Juno release.
As i analyzed the contribution process,it is telling to run tempest tests
for Continuous Integration.

Could any one tell me how and which tempest tests to run on this devstack
deployment for cinder volume driver?
Also tempest has many test cases.Do i have to pass all tests for
contribution of my driver?

Also am i missing any thing thing in below local.conf?

 Heat cfntools is based on SSH, so I assume it requires TCP/IP connectivity
 between VM and the central agent(or collector). But in the cloud, some
 networks are isolated from infrastructure layer network, because of security
 reasons. Some of our customers even explicitly require such security
 protection. Does it mean those isolated VMs cannot be monitored by this
 proposed-VM-agent?

I agree. The problem is that after the initial issue identified in the
initial -2 review has been fixed, and the patch updated, it (sometimes)
happens that we can not get the original reviewer to re-review that update
for weeks - creating the type of issues identified in this thread.

I would agree that if this was a one-off scenarios, we should handling this
as a specific case as you suggest. Unfortunately, this is not a one-off
instance, and hence my request for clearer guidelines from PTL for such
cases.

[openstack-dev] [neutron] Creating database model and agent

Hello,
some days ago I was asking you about creating extension and service 
plugin for Neutron. Now, I am trying to find how to create database 
model for this plugin and agent :)


Could you check if I am understanding this issues properly?

The database model for new plugin should be created in neutron/db 
directory. The model classes should inherit:

1. neutron.db.model_base.BASEV2, which is related to NeutronBaseV2 class
2. if model should contain id or relation to tenant, it should inherit 
also HasTenant and HasId from module neutron.db.models_v2

3. All other fields should be defined according to sqlalchemy orm.
I have also question - how Neutron knows (or sqlalchemy) which 
models/tables should be created in database? At this moment I cannot 
find any code, which initializes the database. The only thing which I 
found is declarative.declarative_base in db.model_base



And one question about creating new agents - is it just thread/process, 
which is managed by Neutron? I was analysing lbaas code and it is just 
python script in /usr/bin/, which executes class. Do I have to create 
anything additional like with database or service plugin to create new 
agent? Or scripts like in LBAAS will be enough + init script?

I would like to follow this discussion so I picked up points.

- There are two way to collect info from swift, one is pollster and 
  the other is notification. And we discussed about how to solve the 
  performance degradation of swift_middleware here. 
  pollster:
   - storage.objects
   - storage.objects.size
   - storage.objects.containers
   - storage.containers.objects
   - storage.containers.objects.size
  notification:
   - storage.objects.incoming.bytes
   - storage.objects.outgoing.bytes
   - storage.api.request

- storage.objects.imcoming.bytes, storage.objects.outgoing.bytes and 
  storage.api.request are handled with swift_middleware because ceilometer 
  need to have the info with per-user and per-tenant basis.
- swift has statsd but there is no per-user and per-tenant related info 
  because to realize this swift has to have keystone-isms into core swift code.
- improves swift_middleware with stopping the 1:1 mapping b/w API calls and 
  notifications
- swift may consume 10s of thousands of event per second and this case is 
fairly 
  unique so far.

I would like to think this performance problem with the following point of view.
- need to handle 10s of thousands of event per second
- possibility to lost events (i.e. swift proxy goes down when events queued in 
a swift process)

With the notification style there are restriction for above points. Therefore I 
change the style 
to get storage.objects.imcoming.bytes, storage.objects.outgoing.bytes and 
storage.api.request from notification to pollster.
Here I met a problem that pointed out by Mr. Merritt, swift has dependency with 
keystone.
But I prefer to solve this problem rather than a problem for notification 
style. What do you think?

My rough idea to solve the dependency problem is 
- enable statsd (or similar function) in swift
- put a middleware in swift proxy
- this middleware does not have any communication with ceilometer but 
  put a mark to followed middleware or swift proxy
- store metrics with a tenant and a user by statsd if there is the mark
  store metrics by statsd if there is no mark
- Ceilometer (central agent) call APIs to get the metrics

Is there any way to solve the dependency problem?

[openstack-dev] [Trove] V1 Client improvements

I’d like to raise the question related to list of API calls that were
implemented at Trove site but not used as part of V1 Client.

Ignored V1 Client APIs:

The problem is that described list of API endpoints are available for
at Trove, and can’t be used as part of V1 client (see link above). Given
API endpoints can be used only as part of compat client.

So, as i can see, we have  options:

   Clean-up V1 client - remove ignored API, develop plans for V2
   -

   Make ignored API available through V1 client (will take certain efforts
   to add CLI representation of this calls, same for Trove site - will need to
   add integration tests to verify that given endpoints are accessible via V1
   client)

Yes, that sounds plausible to me.


My understanding is that this VM agent for ceilometer would need

provider to provider and based on customer reqs / env.

Disclaimer: I'm not fully vested on ceilometer internals, so bear with me.

For consumers wanting to leverage ceilometer as a telemetry service
atop non-OpenStack Clouds or infrastructure they don't own, some edge
cases crop up. Most notably the consumer may not have access to the
hypervisor host and therefore cannot leverage the ceilometer compute
agent on a per host basis.


Yes, currently such access to the hypervisor host is required, least in the
case of the libvirt-based inspector.


In such scenarios it's my understanding the main option is to employ
the central agent to poll measurements from the monitored resources
(VMs, etc.).


Well, the ceilometer central agent is not generally concerned with with
polling related *directly* to VMs - rather it handles acquiring data from
RESTful API (glance, neutron etc.) that are not otherwise available in the
form of notifications, and also from host-level interfaces such as SNMP.



Thanks for additional clarity. Perhaps this proposed local VM agent 
fills additional use cases whereupon ceilometer is being used without 
openstack proper (e.g. not a full set of openstack complaint services 
like neutron, glance, etc.).



However this approach requires Cloud APIs (or other mechanisms) which
allow the polling impl to obtain the desired measurements (VM memory,
CPU, net stats, etc.) and moreover the polling approach has it's own
set of pros / cons from a arch / topology perspective.

The other potential option is to setup the ceilometer compute agent
within the VM and have each VM publish measurements to the collector
-- a local VM agent / inspector if you will. With respect to this
local VM agent approach:
(a) I haven't seen this documented to date; is there any desire / reqs
to support this topology?
(b) If yes to #a, I whipped up a crude PoC here:

So in a sense this is similar to the Heat cfn-push-stats utility[1] and
seems to suffer from the same fundamental problem, i.e. the need for
injection of credentials (user/passwds, keys, whatever) into the VM in order
to allow the metric datapoints be pushed up to the infrastructure layer
(e.g. onto the AMQP bus, or to a REST API endpoint).

How would you propose to solve that credentialing issue?



My initial approximation would be to target use cases where end users do 
not have direct guest access or have limited guest access such that 
their UID / GID cannot access the conf file. For example instances which 
only provide app access provisioned using heat SoftwareDeployments 
(http://tinyurl.com/qxmh2of) or trove database instances.


In general I don't see this approach from a security POV much different 
than whats done with the trove guest agent (http://tinyurl.com/ohvtmtz).


Longer term perhaps credentials could be mitigated using Barbican as 
suggested here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/nova/+bug/1158328

Good point - yes, they are certainly more than just unit tests.  I'd
consider them more functional tests than integration tests, tho:
they only test from the new driver API down to the wire (and back up
again via the fake loopback broker).  For integration testing, I'd
want to put a real broker in there, and run real subprojects over
oslo.messaging using the new driver (neutron, etc).

I'd really like to avoid the classic unit test approach of mocking out
the underlying messaging client api if possible.  Even though that
would avoid the dependency, I think it could result in the same issues
we've had with the existing impl_qpid tests passing in mock, but
failing when run against qpidd.

Just wondering, not trying to put up road-blocks because I'd like to see
how this code performs but haven't had time yet to play with it.

It seems like this is precisely what the functional test setup was designed
to handle. Is there a reason you don't want to run them as functional tests
instead of unit tests?

As functional tests, nobody would need new prereqs just to make it through
unit tests and anyone that wants to do the full tests can install them and
run 'tox functional'.

This is how neutron is starting to test the behavior of OVS and it seems to
work well.

Since they're in EPEL and we run Python 2.6 unit tests today on
CentOS 6 servers, if the proton libraries install successfully there
perhaps we could opportunistically exercise it only under Python 2.6
for now? Not ideal, but it does get it enforced upstream with
minimal fuss. I'd really rather not start accumulating arbitrary PPA
sources on our job workers... I know we've done it for a handful of
multi-project efforts where we needed select backports from non-LTS
releases, but we've so far limited that to only PPAs maintained by
the same package teams as the mainline distro packages themselves.


Yeah, it's becoming pretty clear that adding this PPA to infra is not
The Right Thing To Do.  How does this sound as an alternative:

1) _for_ _now_, make the dependent unit tests optional for
oslo.messaging.  Specifically, by default tox will not run them, but
I'll add a new testenv that adds a requirement for the dependent
packages and runs all the unit tests (default tests + new amqp1.0
tests).  Eg, do 'tox -e amqp1' to pull in the python packages that
require the libraries, and run all unit tests.  This allows those
developers that have installed the proton libraries to run the tests,
and avoid making life hard for those devs who don't have the libraries
installed.

2) Propose a new optional configuration flag in devstack that enables
the AMQP 1.0 messaging protocol (default off).  Something like
$RPC_MESSAGING_PROTOCOL == AMQP1.  When this is set in the devstack
config, rpc_backend will install the AMQP 1.0 libraries, adding the
Qpid PPA in the case of ubuntu for now.

3) Create a non-voting oslo.messaging gate test [0] that merely
runs the 'tox -e amqp1' tests.  Of course, additional integration
tests are a Good Thing, but at the very least we should start with
this. This would give us a heads up should new patches break the amqp
1.0 driver.  This test could eventually become gating once the driver
matures and the packages find their way into all the proper repos.

4) Profit (couldn't resist :)

Longer term, I'd suggest getting it sponsored into Debian
unstable/testing ASAP, interesting the Ubuntu OpenStack team in
importing it into the development tree for the next Ubuntu release,
and then incorporating it into the Trusty Ubuntu Cloud Archive.
We're not using UCA yet, but on Trusty we probably should consider
adding it sooner rather than later since when we tried to tack on
the Precise UCA in the last couple cycles we had too many headaches
from trying to jump ahead substantially on fundamental bits like
libvirt. Breaking sooner and more often means those incremental
issues are easier to identify and address, usually.

Ah - I didn't know that, thanks!  I know one of the Qpid devs is
currently engaged in getting these packages into Debian.  I'll reach
out to him and see if he can work on getting it into UCA next.

+1 As long as we get the tests running, I'm happy. This sounds like
something more acceptable for the infrastructure - at least based on the
discussions on this thread. The plan sounds good to me.

I think it's also possible to run amqp10 gate *just* for the changes
happening in the *amqp* package but it's probably worth it to just make
it non-voting and run it for every patch, as you mentioned.

[openstack-dev] [Neutron] Status of A/A HA for neutron-metadata-agent?

Hi all,

I have been asked by a colleague about the status of A/A HA for
neutron-* processes. From the 'HA guide' [1], l3-agent and
metadata-agent are the only neutron components that can't be deployed in
A/A HA (corosync/pacemaker for a/p is documented as available 'out of
the box' for both).

The l3-agent work is approved for J3 [4] but I am unaware of any work on
the metadata-agent and can't see any mention in [2][3]. Is this someone
has looked at, or is planning to (though ultimately K would be the
earliest right?)?

I propose we de-program DevStack and consolidate it into the QA program.
 Some of my concerns about doing this in the beginning have proven to be a
non-issue in practice.  Also, I believe a program's focus can and should be
wider than we have implemented up to now and this a step toward
consolidating narrowly defined programs.

I read the QA mission statement to already include DevStack's purpose so no
change should be required there.  I'll propose the governance changes
following a few days of discussion.

This is purely a program-level change, I do not anticipate changes to the
DevStack project itself.

To further figure out what's wrong, take a look at the c-vol, c-api
and c-sch
tabs in the stack screen session. If you're unsure where to go from
there after
looking at the output, set the `SCREEN_LOGDIR` setting in your
local.conf [1]
and copy the logs from those tabs to paste.openstack.org

Can you please start tagging your threads on an out-of-tree cinder 
driver with [cinder] in the subject line so this gets filtered into the 
cinder channel at least.


Generally when people come to the openstack-dev list asking for help 
with a deployment they get sent to ask.openstack.org or the general 
openstack mailing list.


This sort of falls in between since it sounds like you're doing 
development on a new driver and trying to get tempest working, but if 
this is going to be an openstack-dev list discussion, please isolate it 
to [cinder], or go to the #openstack-cinder channel in IRC.

[openstack-dev] [TripleO] a small experiment with Ansible in TripleO

A few of us have been independently experimenting with Ansible as a
backend for TripleO, and have just decided to try experimenting
together. I've chatted with Robert, and he says that TripleO was always
intended to have pluggable backends (CM layer), and just never had
anyone interested in working on them. (I see it now, even in the early
docs and talks, I guess I just couldn't see the forest for the trees.)
So, the work is in line with the overall goals of the TripleO project.

We're starting with a tiny scope, focused only on updating a running
TripleO deployment, so our first work is in:

- Create an Ansible Dynamic Inventory plugin to extract metadata from Heat
- Improve/extend the Ansible nova_compute Cloud Module (or create a new
one), for Nova rebuild
- Develop a minimal handoff from Heat to Ansible, particularly focused
on the interactions between os-collect-config and Ansible

We're merging our work in this repo, until we figure out where it should
live:

We've set ourselves one week as the first sanity-check to see whether
this idea is going anywhere, and we may scrap it all at that point. But,
it seems best to be totally transparent about the idea from the start,
so no-one is surprised later.

Armando's point #2 is a good one.  I see that we should have raised
awareness of this more than we did.  The bulk of the discussion and
the development work moved over to the oslo team and I focused energy
on other things.  What I didn't realize was that the importance of
this work to Neutron did not transfer along with it and that simply
delivering the new functionality in oslo by Juno was not sufficient as
Neutron would need time to incorporate it.

I am at a point now where I have some time to work on this.  If
reconsideration for Juno is still an option at this time then I think
what we need to do is to resolve the concerns that are still
outstanding.  I'll admit that I really don't understand what the
concerns are.  I believe that the security concerns have been
addressed.  If you still have concerns around the design of this
feature please bring them up specifically.

Recently we encountered some ovs-agent crash issues.  [1][2][3]

*[Root cause]*
1. Currently only a 'restarted' flag is used in rpc_loop() to identify ovs
status.
* ovs_restarted = self.check_ovs_restart() *

*True*: ovs is running, but a restart happened before this loop. rpc_loop()
reset bridges and re-process ports.
*False*: ovs is running since last loop, rpc_loop() continue to process in
a normal way.

But if ovs is dead, or is not up yet during a restart, check_ovs_restart()
will incorrectly returns True. Then rpc_loop() continues to reset
bridges, and apply other ovs operations, till causing exceptions/crash.
 Related Bug: [1] [2]

2. Also, during agent boot up, ovs status is not checked at all. Agent
crashes without no useful log info, when ovs is dead. Related Bug: [3]

*[Proposal]*
1. Add const {NORMAL, DEAD, RESTARTED} to represent ovs status.
NORMAL - ovs is running since last loop, rpc_loop() continue to process in
a normal way.
RESTARTED - ovs is running, but a restart happened before this loop.
rpc_loop() reset bridges and re-process ports.
DEAD - keep agent running, but rpc_loop() doesn't apply ovs operations to
prevent unnecessary exceptions/crash. When ovs is up, it enters RESTARTED
mode;

2. Check ovs status during agent boot up, if it's DEAD, exit graceful since
subsequent operations causes a crash, and write log to remind that ovs_dead
causes agent termination.

Agreed. That's more typical and means that you don't need to parse

a big deal at all.

This is due to the extra spec test by default setting the vendor name
capability to 'Open Source'. Since your driver probably has a different vendor
name, the scheduler is not able to find a suitable host to fulfill the volume
create request with that volume type. There is a wiki page [1] that covers how
to test your driver in devstack with Tempest, which will avoid this problem.

Yes, I have been enthusiastic about this effort for a long time now :)

standardize the image API in Nova.


The messiest part of the current image API in Nova, by far, is the 
nova.image.glance.GlanceImageService.download() method, which you

different things (and returns different things!) depending on how you 
call it and what arguments you provide. :(



I think it would be nice to get your pov since you worked a lot on

the image location using a call to glanceclient.show(), parsing the 
locations collection from the v2 API response, and passing that URI to 
the glance.store.get() function, I'd prefer to see an interface more 
like this:

collection of the image -- and thus we correct the leaked implementation 
details that currently ooze out of the download() method in 
nova.image.glance.GlanceImageService.download.


Also note that we no longer pass a variety of file descriptors, file 
writers, file destination paths to the download method. Instead, we 
always just pass the image ID or URI and a writeable bytestream 
iterator. And we always return either True or False, instead of None or 
a file iterator depending on the supplied arguments to download().



 The same kind of logic could be added in Cinder.

glance.stores library. We had a majority of +1 but there was a couple
of -1 due to the fact that we don’t have enough concrete examples of
this will be useful or not.


It will definitely be useful in the following:

1) Making the copy/zero-copy/transfer/download methods consistent 
between all the various places in the Nova virt drivers that do similar 
things.


2) Allowing a single place to innovate for the transfer of image bits 
between sources and destinations

There is no doubt the cores are quite stretched and it does take a finite 
amount of time to absorb the context and the content of the multitude of 
patches on any given core reviewer¹s queue. Life happens for everyone and 
things slip thru the cracks, but this suggestion on a timeline for reassessing 
the sticky -2 after a response from the patch owner seems very reasonable to 
adopt.


It certainly helps the submitter to make forward progress rather than exit the 
project in frustration (I know of at least one instance with a contributor 
expressing this as a reason to move on) and establishes a process so that cores 
can rely on a automatic throttle mechanism if they suddenly find themselves 
dealing with other things that are a higher priority for them.

I agree. The problem is that after the initial issue identified in the initial 
-2 review has been fixed, and the patch updated, it (sometimes) happens that we 
can not get the original reviewer to re-review that update for weeks - creating 
the type of issues identified in this thread.

I would agree that if this was a one-off scenarios, we should handling this as 
a specific case as you suggest. Unfortunately, this is not a one-off instance, 
and hence my request for clearer guidelines from PTL for such cases.

I am gonna say three things:

1) If a core-reviewer puts a -2, there must be a good reason for it. If other 
reviewers blindly move on as some people seem to imply here, then those 
reviewers should probably not review the code at all! My policy is to review 
all the code I am interested in/I can, regardless of the score. My -1 may be 
someone's +1 (or vice versa), so 'trusting' someone else's vote is the wrong 
way to go about this.

2) If we all feel that this feature is important (which I am not sure it was 
being marked as 'low' in oslo, not sure how it was tracked in Neutron), there 
is the weekly IRC Neutron meeting to raise awareness, since all cores 
participate; to the best of my knowledge we never spoke (or barely) of the 
rootwrap work.

3) If people do want this work in Juno (Carl being one of them), we can figure 
out how to make one final push, and assess potential regression. We 'rushed' 
other features late in cycle in the past (like nova/neutron event 
notifications) and if we keep this disabled by default in Juno, I don't think 
it's really that risky. I can work with Carl to give the patches some more love.

Or do you think that 3-5 days after an update that addresses the issues 
identified in the original -2, we should automatically remove that -2? If this 
does not happen often, this process does not have to be automated, just an 
exception that the PTL can exercise to address issues where the original 
reason for -2 has been addressed and nothing new has been identified?

Angus,

Rally is designed as an operations tool. Its purpose is to run a production
cloud and give an operator tools and data to profile a production cloud. It
is intended as a first of many such tools.

There is a strong support in the community that operations tools should be
developed as part of OpenStack and Rally is the first such successful
community effort.

I can envision other tools building a community around them and they too
should become part of OpenStack operations tooling.  Maybe Operator Tools
program would be a better name?

Hi Mike,

So that looks like those docs are for the v2 LBaaS API.  The CLI changes
for v2 are not in yet, and the v2 API implementation code is in review
right now.

I am a bit worried that I do not see the v1 docs anymore because v1 will
still remain until its deprecated. In fact, I'm pretty sure v2 will not
be used very much in Juno because it will not have very much driver
support.  So this i something we will have to fix.
