No point convincing idiots who just want free things. Freeloaders are
everywhere. The trick is to spot them before they get to you.

dude,

red1 said it many years ago: "The SW is free, but the people isn't"
and RMS: "Freedom not free beer"

Ordinary folks do not have a clear concept. Part of the education
process about FLOSS should include this.

We should not be afraid, to charge for our services, especially for
'for profit' organisations and gov. Otherwise, they spend their money
on frivolous stuff anyway.

One good story I heard from the Director of MIS at UCLA Medical Center
at a FLOSS conf., "I have a budget every year, then I realised about
20% goes to licensing fees, the rest to maint. fees, services, parts
etc.. By going for FLOSS, I suddenly have 20% more budget to use for
more useful things! But I still have to pay for maintenance, services
etc..."

Another story: (Red1 can confirm) when you buy SAP, the license costs
about 1m (or whatever..) but you will have to budget about 2-3 times
that for the rest of the support and services (expensive 'consultants'
from Accenture, IBM, etc...) When you go for Adempiere, you save that
1m license fee, but you still have to pay for the rest of the
services... (maybe Red1 will give you a discount;-)

Another point to note;

If you are using a SW for a mission critical part of your buisness,
and instead of commercial SW, you replace it with FOSS, does it mean
its function is becomes less important?

If not, you have to pay lah!

If we, as Malaysians, misinterprete the 'free' part of services,
sometimes we also abuse the 'free' part about sharing. I know of some
organisations that use FLOSS but they never contribute anything back
in return!

One way is to ask them to go to commercial open source such as RedHat.
They are modelled to serve such professional requests.
There is no argument about devs not charging for freebies cos thats the
lifestyle that defines the era of RMS. They made out of freedom and
sharing. US was once the land of the plenty. Today it is not. Its now
money, and selling more arms to make money while grabbing oil and land.
Still many of us love that concept of sharing and freedom. So i find
today many local FOSS guys and gals too often willing to share without
asking for compensation. IMHO that spirit should not stop. Who knows,
one day the spirit moves from California to the other side.
