2004-11-08 Thread TerriStimmel
Hello everyone,
Well, yesterday I found a terrific boombox. I was very impressed with it.
It has everything I'm looking for, and even some things I wasn't looking
for.
It's an IWA. To be honest, it sort of looks like something from outer
space, but that's alright. smile
It has virtual surround sound, which I didn't even know boomboxes had these
days. It sounds really good though, even when you turn the virtual surround
sound feature off.
I forgot to check and see if it had an earphone jack, so I hope it does. I
noticed that they seem to be removing these in some boomboxes now, as well.
Which I think is rather odd.
I'm hoping that I won't get that bleed in from the NPR station. I did test
the radio, but because of where this store is, they were only able to pick
up a couple of channels. And that's how it was at Wal-mart also. (these
two stores aren't far from each other).
Anyway, I found it at Circuit City, and the people in there were very
helpful.
I tested the tape recorder to see how it would record from radio, and it did
well. There wasn't any background noise, like you might find with some.
However, I do think the recording could be a bit better, but this isn't bad
at all.
I have to admit that it does sound better than what I got from my old
boombox.
This IWA is apparently a new model. I don't have the model number right now
though, or I'd share it with you all. I can tell you though, that the price
for this boombox is around $90.00.
Now for the bad news.
After I looked at it, and decided to buy it, the young man who was helping
me, went to get one. I had just been looking at their display model.
Well, they were out, and so I had to special order one. The bad news is,
that it can take as long as a month for them to come in.
I asked if I could have the one on display, and I could have, if someone
else also hadn't special ordered one.
I thought that was an interesting policy, but it does make sense.
Although, how is that other person, ever really going to know what happened
to the display model. So the more I think about it, that policy doesn't
make much sense. smile
Another thing though, that is rather interesting, is that if you order
something, you either have to put part of the payment down then, or you can
go ahead and pay for the whole thing.
I had know idea that Circuit City did this. I'm surprised that other places
don't do this. But then again, maybe they do, and it's just not something
I've ever noticed before.
Thanks to all of you who gave me good recommendations. I do appreciate it.
And as soon as this IWA is here, I'll give you more details, if anyone is
interested.
Terri

Well... I would have agreed with you not all that long ago but circuits for
digital radio designs have changed dramatically over the last few years,
again! you usually get what you pay for.

The symptoms described in the original description of the boom-box which
was at the centre of this discussion would indicate to me that the digital
radio circuit was cheaply made and just... well... just included in the
unit as an afterthought.

The digital tuner in the Panasonic RX-ED50 boom-box which I referred to a
few days ago (which I have one of) has as good a sensitivity as any! analog
radio, its the most sensitive digital tuner I've yet found in a boom-box
and the band is farely wide too, Panasonic have really done their homework
on this little beauty.

Yeah! the RX-ED50 ain't the cheapest boom-box around, costing $329.00 RRP
(Australian) but (once again!) you get what you pay for.

Now if anyone still doubts the sensitivity of digital radios, then take a
look at the Ccrane or Outback radio and be prepared to be blown away.

I can't help much when it comes to brand names, but it seems to me that
analogue tuning is superior to digital, particularly when it comes to a.m.

made in the early 70s, and it doesn't record properly, but it picks up
a.m. radio like you wouldn't believe. It cost $10, Canadian, and was
worth it just for that. My sony stereo - digital - can't pick up an a.m.

Now I have a couple more questions.
If I purchase a different boombox, than the Sony I bought, is it likely that
I'll run into the same problem I have with this one?
I want to be able to pick up NPR without getting that Christian station
bleeding in. Like I said, I never had this problem with my analog boombox.
Also, how exactly does digital tuning work? And how is it different from
analog tuning?
I was able to find two boomboxes on the Circuit City website, that use
analog tuning. However, they are made by brands that I'm not familiar with.
I don't want to buy one of them, to just have to replace it a few months
later, because it wasn't that good.
One was made by Nexxtech.
And I believe the other one was made by ESA, but I'm not sure if I'm
remembering that exactly right or not.
Has anyone ever heard of either of these brands? If so, do you know how
good their stuff is, or isn't?
Thank you,

Right! well first things first, this unit will not! play MP3 audio. Panasonic
do however make a Boom-Box which does play MP3 audio but it sounds nowhere near
as good as this one, has a quarter of the power etc.
The RX-ED50 has a 3.5 aux jack on the back so you can connect it easily! to a
MP3 CD player, output of a computer sound card etc. I've listed below some of
the features of this quite remarkable (in my view) boom-box.
CD PLAYER
various play modes including shuffle, 2 repeat modes and programme play (up to
32 tracks)
motorised CD draw
TUNER
24 presets (12 Medium wave and 12 FM)
Seek/scan facilities
CASSETTE DECKS
dual cassette decks (1 play and 1 record) both decks having full auto-reverse
facilities
feather-touch controls
TPS (tape Programme Sensor)
CD auto-edit
Auto tape-type selector
This unit can be operated (fully) from the remote control as well as from the
buttons on the front and its very accessible.
I know! that this unit is available in the U.K. nad in Australia so I would
assume that its available in the U.S. and other countries, its one of the most
popular models of Boom-Box in Australia and has been for the last 3 years.

 Hello!

May I suggest that you take a look at the Panasonic RX-ED50.

Now firstly, it doesnt' have an analog tuner but its very sensitive and
every
easy to operate, perfectly accessible for blind people.

The sound is excellent as the units speakers are inclosed in their own
cabinets, (by that I don't mean that the speakers are detachible).

The unit is wider than it is high.

The power of the unit is very good! at around 20 watts RMS per channel.

I can give further details of this unit if you're interested.

Its the best boom box (or POWER BLASTER as Panasonic prefers to call it)
that
I've ever seen and it consists of twin cassette decks, radio and CD
player.

At 04:39 PM 11/6/2004, you wrote:
 Hello everyone,
Recently, my boombox took a fall, and in the fall the door to my CD player
came off. And I can't get the tape deck to record from the radio anymore,
though all other functions of the tape deck still work.
So I am now trying to find a new one.
I've looked at some at Wal-mart and Target, and I'm really not that happy
with how most of them look, or how they are set up. I hate that
everything
 is so digital now.
I bought a Sony one, but I'm not that pleased with it and I'm planning to
 take it back.
The cd player and tape deck are nice, though the tape deck is set up
 backward.
But my main dislike with it, is that it's not the easiest thing to figure
 out.
But also, the stations don't seem to come in that well.
On my old analog boombox, which I got about 1997, or 1998, was wonderful.
It picked up stations well, and it had good base to it.
Although, over the years, it seemed to lose a bit of sound quality, and I
noticed that the tape deck was starting to make a bit more noise than it
 used to.
But other than that, it was great.
I believe it was either made by Philips, or Magnavox. But I'm not real
 sure.
I'd like a boombox that will work just as well. But I don't want one that
uses menus, if possible. Nor do I want it to have a clock, as that's just
 useless.
I'm looking for one that will have a good quality tape deck in it. One
that
will sound good, whether you are recording from the radio, or a cd.
I want one that has good sound quality, and that can pick up FM stations
 well.
I want it to have a nice and simple cd player, not one that can do 100
things. Although, if I could be able to record from cd, to tape, then
that
 would be nice.
I'm not looking for something that's going to be real expensive, as I just
 couldn't afford that.
But something around $100, on down, won't be too bad.
 Does anyone have any suggestions?
I'm not looking to buy one online, because I want to be able to go and
look
at it, and listen to it if possible.
Any thoughts on this will be much appreciated.
 Thank you,
 Terri

Unfortunately no!
I should make a point of mentioning how well this unit does record, it will
record on type I cassettes and above and it has an AC erase circuit (no rumble
in your recordings).

Thank you,
Terri

nero 5.5 compatibility question

2004-11-08 Thread eoconnor
Hi folks,

I recently uninstalled an earlier version of nero and installed 5.5
instead.

When I tried to burn audio files to a cd-rw disc, I was told that nero was
not compatible with my cd-rw Drive.

Don't know the model number off-hand, but it's a 4 year old Sony burner on
a Dell Dimensions 4100 pc.

Question: is cd burning software sometimes specific to particular cd
writers?

Regards with thanks,

eamonn

I'm glad you found something to suit you.
You'll probably find out more about your unit if you visit http://www.aiwa.com
As far as I'm aware, AIWA electronics isn't sold in Australia any longer which
is a real pity! as they made some most interesting stuff.
The Panasonic RX-ED50 I've talked about in previous messages also has a Virtual
Surround feature so I'm not surprised that the AIWA has it.
I would imagine that your AIWA (like my Panasonic) would EQ presets too!
At 10:31 PM 11/8/2004, you wrote:
And as soon as this IWA is here, I'll give you more details, if anyone is
interested.

A FEATURE FOR A FUTURE VERSION OF SOUND FORGE

Greetings!
I've been using Sound Forge for the past 4 years and I wish that the people at
Sony Pictures would add a function to insert a sound file at the current
location of the cursor, at the end of a currently open file etc, would make
allot of editing jobs easier. At present (to my knowledge) the only wao of
inserting a file where you want it into a currently open file is to open a new
file in a new window, select all the data in that window, go to your other open
file, find the point where you wish to insert the clipboard contents and paste
it there.

Cheers

that..if I'm ever to have XM Radio, I'll either have to get the version that

That doesn't make sense. After all, whether you plug a jack into

analog

There is a benefit. If your are a high end audio person, you know
that
lining in a tape-deck to a sound card does give you a loss in sound
quality, graininess, and even some buzzing called bus noise, not to
be
confused with the common 60 Hz hum. This unit probably attempts to
allow you to record to and from the machine...directly, which may
mean
that the bus noise and other artifacts may be non-existent.

I have the MZ-NH700 and like it quite well. It has a menu system and
it's relatively difficult to set the recording mode etc. But since one
can record nearly eight hours in HI-SP mode, I nearly never change the
recording mode anyway. There are two menu modes, simple and advanced. In
simple mode, it's relatively easy to erase one or all tracks. It has to
be done via the menu system, but one only has to select the first menu
item of the main menu and a couple of sub menus. So one just presses the
menu button and then OK a couple of times. I have not used the group
feature yet. This is quite important for discs which such a lot of
memory. Because I used groups on my MZ-B10, I assume, that one can at
least use some group features on the 700. Sony has just released a Wave
converter, with which one can convert uploaded recordings into Wave
files. But IMHO, SonicStage, the software with which one has to upload,
is quite cumbersome, so HI-MD isn't the best choice, when one wants to
upload recordings to a PC. For that, the PTR1 is still the clear winner.

Re: nero 5.5 compatibility question

2004-11-08 Thread Kevin Lloyd
Hi Eamonn.

Generally speaking, when you get this error from Nero it's a sure sign that
you need to go to their website and download the latest version which will
have support for all the latest burners.

What's strange here is that you've uninstalled an earlier version? and,
presumably, you've used the earlier version of Nero to burn discs
successfully?

Anyway, I'd suggest you check out the Nero website for the latest 5.5
release.

Incidentally, I've recently bought a dimension 4700 machine and tried to
install Nero with the same incompatibility error. I've now upgraded to
version 6.3 as even the latest 5.5 release didn't recognise my DVD burner.

Question: is cd burning software sometimes specific to particular cd
 writers?

The RNIB used to sell an adaptor which would allow you to connect one pair

Re: xm radio online service

2004-11-08 Thread Joy Tilton
Well, I'm assuming that a car kit is actually a cassette with a wire hanging
out the back end of it, with an 8th inch jack on the end of the wire. The
general purpose is for hooking the xm radio up to the car's casette player.
However, you can put this thing into any kind of casette player if you want.
For a time, I was using this car kit to make one of my double deck boom boxes
become speakers for my computer. Plus, it would allow me to record stuff off
my pc onto cassette. It's good for a boombox which does not have line in jacks
on it.

I downloaded the software and it worked beautifully. I couldn't
understand a few things- Suppose, I want to play a particular
instrument. How will I reach directly to this instrument? I couldn't
find chords, How I should find the chords? I was unable to find beats.
Will someone tell me in detail how I should access all keystrokes? I
couldn't understand what pan means and what can be accessed through it.

  Greetings,

I am a MCP, and long time ago I developed a simple
  program with the
objective of allow the user to play music using the computer
  keyboard. It is
not apropriated for professional uses, of course,
  but is very simple to
  use,
it is free and doesn't require any kind of
  configuration.

The software was not created especifically for
  handicapped people (by
  the
way, I'm not blind), but several blind users were
  able to use it
  without any
problem. Once the program is started, it is ready to
  play. Some
  settings
like Volume, Instrument and Chords can be defined
  using the keys from
  F1 to
F12 (the keys are already programmed to perform
  theese actions). If you
  are
able to see a little, or have some friend that can
  describe an image
  for
you, ask him to access this :

 http://pianoeletronico.tripod.com/images/piano_tela.gif
  . It is a
  screenshot
of the main screen of the program, it shows how
  simple and easy to use
  the
  program is.

One of the most interesting things in the program is
  the fact that you
  can
play using any one of the 128 Instrument Set (from
  Gerenal MIDI
  Standard),
and even press more than one key at the same time to
  play
  poliphonically.

Play music using the computer keyboard may seen
  pointless if you have a
  real
piano or eletronic keyboard, but consider the
  possibility to play
  anytime,
anywere (perhaps in your lunch break, and I presume
  that you don't have
  a
  piano in you office!).

You can download the program using this link :

 http://pianoeletronico.tripod.com/files/Setup_Piano_Eletronico.zip

The program is absolutelly free, and it never
  expires.

I created a Home-Page with all the information about
  the program, but
unfortunelly the site is in Portuguese only by now.
  The link is
  http://pianoeletronico.tripod.com . If you have
  experience with Visual
Basic, you can download an Open-Source (but simpler) version of the
  program
  at http://pianoeletronico.tripod.com/minipiano.html

You can see an English version of the site
  (performed by Google
  translation
  engine) here :

 http://translate.google.com/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fpianoeletronico.t

 ripod.com%2Flangpair=pt%7Cenhl=pt-BRie=UTF-8ie=UTF-8oe=UT
  F-8prev=%2Flanguage_tools

However, the translated version has some flaws, so
  I decided to
  perform my
own translation of the most important information
  about the program.
  Here it
  comes :

Electronic Piano 2.0 is a Freeware program
  (gratuitous) with the
  objective
to allow the user to play musical notes and chords
  through the computer
keyboard. Even making use of the MIDI resources of
  the sound card (like
  the
avaibility of 128 musical instruments), the program
  doesn't require
knowledge or configuration of Drivers or any device connected to the
  system.
Basically, Electronic Piano 2.0 is a program
  indicated for people who
  simply
wants to play music in the computer at any time,
  without have to
  purchase
and install a professional music edition software
  (usually expensive).

  Characteristics of the Program :
  - 128 musical instruments available
  - 47 different sounds of drums and percussion
  - Poliphony (possibility to play more than one note
  at the same time)
  - Control of Main Volume and Pan
  - Combine up to 3 different musical instruments (any
  one of the 128)
  - Graphical panel with the keys
  - Note lenght is determined by the amount of time
  that the key is
  pressed
  - Execution of Major, Minor and 7 Chords by
  pressing only one key
  - 7 octaves can be selected

  Information about the programmer :

  and a Microsoft
  Certified

I was told by one of our electronics stores that connecting two stereo
units to one stereo set of headphones with a simple Y-adaptor is not
feasible. I couldn't say why, and I do not know how true this information

Kevin,
The RNIB used to sell an adaptor which would allow you to connect one pair
of
headphones to two devices so that the output of one came out of the
left-hand
side and the output of the other came out of the right. I used to have
one
several years ago. I don't know if they still sell them, but it might be
worth
giving them a ring if you can't find one anywhere else.
Good luck,

I haven't understood why it doesn't seem to be accessible. Once I click
on the artist, then the category and then the button for the station I
want, it plays fine.

I have found that if I use the up and down arrow along with tabbing, I
can get around just fine.

Now, the flash doesn't work real well. But, if I am curious about a
song that is playing, I click the button for the artist or the station
again and XM shows me what the artist is, the track and the album.

Now, my question is, why, on the weekends, do they play things that are
a week old but go live during the week.

You can click on the buttons that says decades, news, sports, etc. Once
done, you'll see channels for that genre you chose. It is more of a
visual thing, but I had little success with it. I believe I didn't see
the entire channel lineup for the genre I chose, but was friendly
enough. I wouldn't pay $7.95, ($3.95 for subscribers) a month for

uh, the next question is, which screen reader are you using?
Furthermore, I found that the tab key does not work.

I believe I didn't see
the entire channel lineup for the genre I chose, but was friendly
enough. I wouldn't pay $7.95, ($3.95 for subscribers) a month for
something I couldn't fully use. I would have gotten in touch with tech
support, but I'd rather pay for the satellite than the web.

Hi Ray and Doc,

Kathy Arnold here. I tried to sign up for XM Radio online last night. I
experienced the same problem as you guys did. So, I called their tech
support. Actually, I called the 800 number and they transferred me to
tech support. Anyway, they weren't very helpful. ?They tried, but they
were unable to tell me how to make the XM online accessible. I'd be
curious to know if you guys get any farther then I did. Have a good
one.

Kathy

The new XM portable is called Myfi.
They're planning to sell the whole
package including home kit, car kit,
headphones, rechargeable battery, etc.
for $349. I don't know what you'd do if
you just want the receiver. Guess they
prefer to sell it as a whole package
with stuff we don't need. What'd a
blind person need with a car kit anyway
when they don't have a driver in the
household?
Or don't know anyone who drives.

bit torent

2004-11-08 Thread Roger R. Cusson
Hi Listers,

i want to know if any one is successfully using a bit torent client.

I need lots of info on this topic so, anyone real experienced with the whole
bit torent thing should contact me off list, as to not clutter up the list
with my questions.

e-mail address for me is:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

if on the other hand, people want to know all about bit torent, and its use
or perhaps lack of use with jfw or window eyes, perhaps we could keep some
discussion of this topic on-list.

I want to know what I need, where to get the program or programs, how it
works, how to work the various programs out there, and definitely most
importantly, what program does or does not work with the various screen
readers out there

Yes, I think so. Smile! I had a little trouble logging back on tonight,
but I finally got on. For some reason, I logged in, but couldn't get to the
player window. I called tech support. They put me on hold to find out what
was wrong. While I was on hold, The player window came up. So far,
everything works fine! We'll see what happens tomorrow. Smile!

I've tried downloading it, but haven't used it yet. I use Soundforge, and
like it, but I think Harry said that it's faster than Soundforge. Maybe he
can tell you more about it. I don't know if that would have Noise Reduction
like Soundforge, or the pitch shift. I hope this helps. Maybe others might
be of more help on this.

I think it is a good program once you get the hang of it. It records direct
to MP3 and edits MP3s without converting them so there is no loss of
quality. It also has command line options and it is free.
