The PUG is supposed to be as inclusive a gallery as possible. This means
that themes should be doable with fairly basic equipment, and that the
subject shouldn't be exclusive to certain parts of the world.
My understanding is that cormorants are a seaside dwelling creature,
therefore out of reach of people who don't live near large bodies of

Frank,

The elbow sticking into the frame from the right is
distracting, and the trees aren't blurred enough to
catch my interest. There is nothing else going on.

Shot from the front of the car, so that we could see
peoples' faces, this could be a really good shot.

Re: July PUG submission

2007-06-19 Thread Rick Womer
Scott,

I just tried to submit a photo. The problem with the
new form is that there isn't a "Submit" button--there
is just a "Send Comment" button, and links for "PUG
Submission" and "No Comments". So, I filled out the
form and clicked the link for "PUG Submission".

Not intuitive.

Please let me know if it went through.

Not just the power supply, but also the mains power going into the
supply. Since personal computers have become commodity items, the low
cost power supplies in them typically aren't designed with enough
chutzpah to deal with dirty input power, or to clean it up sufficiently
to satisfy the (sensitive) digital chickens it's keeping fed. This is
one of the benefits of (some) UPS systems: they clean up the mains power
before the power supply in the computer has to deal with it.

Yes, it is limiting ... you have to work the scanning application's
controls carefully to acquire as much data as you can when the
quantization space is small. 8-bit scanners also typically have
smaller dynamic range.

That said, I worked with 8bit scanners for several years and managed
to get some excellent quality scans from B&W and color prints.

Several folks I know have installed and are using the public beta of

It's the allure of forbidden fruit. Back in the days when it was only
available from Kansas and parts west, it had a legendary reputation
amongst east coast college boys. More than one college road trip was
planned around how far west you actually had to drive to find a place
that sold Coors beer.

And I don't think the current Coors beer is made the same way it was
back then either.

Looks like a late VW Super-Beetle, which was manufactured for sale in

There's a large on-line market for VWs at:

I didn't fire up Nero, just looked in Exploder and it said "put a disk in,
stupid" or something to that effect. IOW, the disc was not visible to the file
manager. I'll try Nero tonight. Will also perm all I can from the DVD
recorder controls to see if I have missed something.

The machine doing the recording is a Panasonic Digibox/DVD recorder. This
takes digital TV and radio signals and converts them to analogue which then
goes through another black box to get the SCART output to RF, because my TV is
from another millenium. Allied to the DVDR, it's the easiest machine I've ever
used to record TV. Go into the week-ahead digital guide (one button press),
find the programme you want to record, press the buttons as guided onscreen and
walk away.

That was pre-Spotmatic (6-digit numbers). Yours is post-Spotmatic (7
figures).
AFAIK, all pre-spottie Super Takumar 35/3.5 lenses were in the 7xx,xxx
range, while there are also Super Takumar 35/3.5 lenses bearing 1,xxx,xxx,
3,xxx,xxx and 4,xxx,xxx S/Numbers.

Then, S-M-C Takumar 35/3.5 lenses went forward (starting around 4,500,000)
with 4,xxx,xxx, 5,xxx,xxx, 6,xxx,xxx and 7,xxx,xxx figures.

WTB - focusing screen for MX

2007-06-19 Thread Sylwester Pietrzyk
As in subject - I'd buy a focusing screen for Pentax MX. It can be
either SC-1 (split + microprism), SA-1 or SA-3 (microprism only) or
SB-1 (split only). So if someone has one spare, please contact me, we
will talk about payment and shipping :-) BTW - what is the difference
between SA-1 and SA-3 focusing screens??? Or maybe it makes a sense
to use LX screens, although I'm afraid of 1/3 EV underexposure on
slide film?

Cheers,

Yep, but it's a 1931 - the last year for Excelsior-Henderson.
The bike is a KL model, which was their high-performance bike: High
compression pistons and hotter cams than the standard "KJ".
And, as Frank noted, that *is* an in-line four cylinder engine.

I have not yet explored LR's file ability, and i quess i should.

I have a nearly full Maxtor external HD i store all my pic s and
important documnets on, and i also burn a CD or DVD depending on the
file size.

I just ordered from my old work, a WD 160 Gig USB 2 external for Mac
and PC. Its on back order and my mail room buddy will courier it up
when ready.

I'd never heard that before but it's very plausible.
Of course, heat is a major cause of power supply problems ;)

That's my plan for this evening. 8-( I've had quite a good look but there
does not seem to be any "erase" or "format" option.

On another topic entirely, will be in Polska from 13th to 24th august. I have
a small but beautifully appointed apartment in Krakow, with spare beds, if
anyone wishes to visit. The weekend in the middle is already taken, so if you
turn up then it's the floor or a bench in the Planty.

Thanks for the replies. I will try a blank RAM disk in the computer tonight to
see if it will recognise an empty one. When it doesn't I'll go and buy some
blank disks. 8-) Anyone want DVDs of the British Superbike and MotoGP to date?

It is almost identical to the allegedly 1930 model on the Wikipedia site.

No braided _hose_ on any motorcycle in 1930 that I can think of. Many _cars_
still had cable/rod brakes. That is part of the wiring harness.

Mike, there is usually an option to erase each title somewhere in
menu of the recorder. At least it is done that way in my Panasonic
DVD recorder. But you should have an option to format entire DVD-RAM
disc also, just you have to check all menu options once again :-)
