Alan,

I thought I had no idea (because I dismissed the only idea that came to
my mind for being wrong). So, I "cheated" with the help of Uncle Google.
In the middle of the first page of the results, was this one
http://goo.gl/1sWaeC
that indicated that my initial guess was likely to be correct:
"cameras".
Obviously, they are off by 2-3 orders of magnitude.

Where do I claim my prize? ;-)

Cheers,

Igor

Subject: Giulia, my muse, in 'Dreams' photo-performing project

Hi all,

Encouraged by Bruce, here I'm going to explain my ongoing photo project with
Giulia. First, she's
not a model. She's a dancer & choreographer, and that's essential to understand
the concept of the
project. It is called 'Lost Dreams, Found Dreams'. What we are doing here is
more or less the
following:
We do several shooting sessions in very different environments (wheat field,
clay lake, clothing
store, studio, etc.) and each of them is seen as a different dream of mine.
As you know, dreams depend on you but you cannot take true control of them...
that's the same with
Giulia. I arrange the shooting, but then she takes her freedom to move & change
the way she behaves
there. She never stays still... moments and situations come and go and vanish,
just like dreams. And
I try & shoot them like fixing a dream when you awake before it's gone forever.
At the end, we will get a photo exhibition, and much more.
In fact, Giulia will also create a solo choreography inspired by the feelings,
the movements and the
situations she experienced in the different photo shootings. Then she will
perform that solo in a
dance festival here in Italy on September 12, dancing through the printed
pictures on show and then
also behind and in front of a screen where other pics will be projected onto.
That show will be the
opening event of the festival, with me on stage shooting her performence. So
photo & dance will
merge once again, in an endless loop. Exciting, isn't it?

And now, a few sample pics:
www.dariobonazza.com/spsr/K3_10759.jpg
www.dariobonazza.com/spsr/K3_00876.jpg

Re: PESO: Lee Mansion

2015-06-08 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Thanks, Donald and Ann.I hardly noticed the little vehicle at the
bottom of the image, but now I agree it should be cropped out, perhaps
with an equal crop along the right side.

It was a gorgeous day, but no clouds at all. A better day for walking
than for photographing.

I have always liked the way the mansion hangs over the central area of
the cemetery, and draws the eye upward. That is what I tried to
capture here/

I am not happy that it is now the Lee Memorial. I have never been a
fan of Robert E. Lee, and think of him as a traitor and a war
criminal. Saying that has got me in a lot of trouble on another list
in which I participate.

Beautiful photography Rick. It was great to see you and Joy - apologies
for not spending more time with you all. I had very little time to get
familiar with the video camera before I was off! In fact I have just
returned from a hectic 10 days sailing up the Bohuslan coast from
Goteburg to Oslo, filming the trip. All went well and I'm back on dry
land (albeit with 'shore-sickness' !) now and organising and ingesting
the video. And a phone call from a major client this morning to do an
instructional DVD on plastics welding. It never stops!

Cheers

Re: test

His (and his brother's) style was fly-on-the-wall, so the idea was that the
cameraman (and sound man) weren't there - you, the viewer, were there in the
action. They were trying not to influence events by their presence, but to
erase themselves.

Thanks, Jack & Mark. They grow prolifically here - the double varieties too.
The yellow ones attract butterflies but not the red. Those plants are rather
tall & the flowers face upwards so a ground level photo doesn't really do

You'll be cured if you live here for a while. Our winter range in the

Ann, you and my wife are exactly the same when it comes to temperatures
above 75F.
I endure low AC settings and dodge fans at every hand from spring to well
into the Fall.
A summer drive is, no matter which direction we're going, one in which the
sun is always
on her side of the car. She constructs sun barriers of clothing, pillows,
maps, news papers
(purchased for the purpose) and seat cushions. Difficult to find her at
times when we stop
to fill either ourselves or the gas tank.
We are in a record threatening heat cycle at the moment, (I think it's my
fault???) so am
looking forward to the beginning a series of staggering electric bills.
Good thing it's "dry heat." (GAG)

Re: PESO -- Bar Belle...and dating pictures

2015-06-08 Thread P.J. Alling
Sleeves. as I've heard those types of tattoos called have been around
for a long time, I became aware of them about ten maybe fifteen years
ago, but I'm sure they existed before that. Women didn't seem to be
getting them until more recently.

One of the explanations was bandied about, for the rise in tattoos, in
Western cultures, had to do with the turn of the century. It seems that
there have been more tattoos at the turn of the 20th century, and the
19th, (as far as can be determined and if I remember the articles I read
correctly). Some theory about the century changing that made people
want to have more control over something, and tattoos were taking
control of your own body. It seemed pretty silly, as a theory.

A wonderfully atmospheric picture, but I don't understand the culture
of young ladies covering themselves with body art/tattoos. I must be
getting old.

Malcolm

I'm pretty sure it's a generational thing like long hair on men when I
was a teen.

I don't find it attractive either, but it's not my place to criticize
their choices. I generally try to remember all the hassles I had at
that age over my appearance and try to keep my mouth shut.

It's also that I find it interesting dating when a picture was taken by
cultural changes. I seem to have missed when the odd tattoo on an arm became
replaced often with artwork covering the whole arm - and maybe only one arm
etc.

Smoking in public is another; I can look at pictures taken locally and
notice the changes. Up until the late 80s you often saw most people smoking
in public and that has reduced to a rare instance now - and nine out of ten
times, it will be a woman in 2015, at least around here.

Financial indicators of the times. I've used the skip observation before (or
whatever builders call the large metal container to remove waste from
projects where you are), but in 'good times', they are replaced regularly,
filled with all sorts of things that look hardly used. I can remember at one
point in 1974 it was rare to see one on the streets with money for work
tight, and those skips were almost impossible to fill, as others found use
for what was put in it, almost as soon as it went in!

Getting back to the picture, it's that curiosity of how this will be looked
at in say, 2035? Will people be able to date it roughly - 'Ah yes, that sort
of body art was popular up until the early 2020s?'.

Malcolm

Thank you, Paul.

I wasn't around the list in 2005, but it would seem the membership has
changed pretty significantly since then. Those uninterested in nudes
are now able to just move politely on without negative comment.

'Course, it's only been up half a day, there's time yet for an
outburst. That's not a solicitation! :)

This almost didn't happen. I accidentally shot it 4 stops underexposed
(I adjusted the light for f:4 but I forgot to adjust the K-3's
aperture -- d'oh!). I passed over it in Lightroom and almost marked it
for deletion as it was just a black frame. But I looked more closely
and saw some faint detail. Dragged up the exposure slider and ... well
what have we here? In fact it was the best of a short sequence of
upper body shots! And it is the model's favourite.

 Lesson: never delete nothin'.

 K-3, DA* 55/1.4, f:11 (!), 1/100th sec, ISO 100.
Light is Paul C Buff Einstein strobe with PCB seven foot Extreme
 Silver PLM (parabolic) umbrella, camera-right.

 Comments welcome.

Re: Giulia, my muse, in 'Dreams' photo-performing project

2015-06-08 Thread Bruce Walker
Interesting? Bravo, Dario!

I am impressed and moved by your project. Brilliantly conceived and
marvellously executed, what I've seen of it so far. It is a wonderful
experience and such a privilege to be able to collaborate so closely
with a creative force like your Giulia, the results rise above "mere"
photography.

I just wish I could see the fall performance. I do hope to see the
footage at least.

I am very excited for you! Glad I asked about it. :) Please do keep
posting updates.

You'll be cured if you live here for a while. Our winter range in the
Limpopo Lowveld is about 5-28°C (41-81°F). At 22°C (72°F), like today, I'd

My bird book describes this as a "Great Egret." (I'm not judging my own
stuff.)
Thought this too far away for the DA55~300, but the detail in this fairly
heavily cropped image surprises me.

I taught English Lit and Composition at a very special place called Percy L.
Julian High School from 1975 to 1980. Prior to my years at Julian I had been
teaching at one of the worst schools in Chicago — Austin High School — a West
Side school that had gone from 100% white to 100% black in a few years. The
administration and the largely white staff didn’t know what to do, the school
was out of control and on fire frequently and, at one point, the National Guard
had to be called in. In 1975 the federal government mandated faculty
integration, meaning that if you were a white teacher at a school that had too
many white teachers and you wanted to transfer to a school that had too many
black teachers, they had to allow you to apply for a position. I had heard
about Julian. It was an all-black school on the south side of Chicago. It
wasn’t a white school that had re-segregated but rather a brand new school that
a prosperous middle class black community had fought for. I ap

plied, the principal approved it, and the largely black staff welcomed me and
several other Austin teachers with open arms.

I had some great classes and some wonderful kids at Julian. I taught Honors
English 3 and a special double-period Humanities class. The kids and I went to
the Chicago Symphony, the opera and a number of theatrical presentations. We
had a great marching band, majorettes and cheerleaders. All in the mid 70s when
the white kids in the suburban schools were thumbing their noses at those kind
of things. We also had a fabulous football team, and in 1979 we became the
first public school in almost 20 years to win a city championship over the
predominantly white catholic league schools.

I documented much of my time at Julian on film. I have several thousand
transparencies and BW negs that I shot during those five happy years. I’ve just
begun scanning some of them. I started with that 1979 football championship,
but I have many more that I will eventually scan.

In March of 1980 I was offered a job in New York at Hearst Magazine Division.
The Chicago Board of Education had run out of money and had stopped paying the
teachers. We were on the picket line when I got the call. I crossed the line,
walked into the office to turn in my resignation on Thursday afternoon, March
7, 1980 and flew to New York the next morning. I still feel guilty. Today,
Julian is still somewhat better than the other Southside Chicago High Schools,
but the magic is largely gone. The entire south side of Chicago is a mess.
The gangs are in control, and kids are shot on the street every day. A number
of Julian kids have been killed on their way home from school. It’s had for me
to imagine. It’s heartbreaking.

Here are the first of my Julian scans. The way it was 40 years ago.

Giulia, my muse, in 'Dreams' photo-performing project

2015-06-08 Thread Dario Bonazza

Hi all,

Encouraged by Bruce, here I'm going to explain my ongoing photo project with
Giulia. First, she's not a model. She's a dancer & choreographer, and that's
essential to understand the concept of the project. It is called 'Lost
Dreams, Found Dreams'. What we are doing here is more or less the following:
We do several shooting sessions in very different environments (wheat field,
clay lake, clothing store, studio, etc.) and each of them is seen as a
different dream of mine.
As you know, dreams depend on you but you cannot take true control of
them... that's the same with Giulia. I arrange the shooting, but then she
takes her freedom to move & change the way she behaves there. She never
stays still... moments and situations come and go and vanish, just like
dreams. And I try & shoot them like fixing a dream when you awake before
it's gone forever.

At the end, we will get a photo exhibition, and much more.
In fact, Giulia will also create a solo choreography inspired by the
feelings, the movements and the situations she experienced in the different
photo shootings. Then she will perform that solo in a dance festival here in
Italy on September 12, dancing through the printed pictures on show and then
also behind and in front of a screen where other pics will be projected
onto. That show will be the opening event of the festival, with me on stage
shooting her performence. So photo & dance will merge once again, in an
endless loop. Exciting, isn't it?

And now, a few sample pics:
