I have some other (unscanned) shots of this scene done in landscape where the image is pretty much as you describe, but i like the contrast (which is greater in the print/neg than in this scan) between the green at the top and water and rocks at the bottom - with the cropped/landscape versions you don;t get anywhere near so much impact. However, I haven;t though about cropping - the course i recently did (which this was a submission to) didn't allow any cropping of prints (to force better in-camera composition on all the students) and as most of my photography over the last year has been for that the idea didn't cross my mind :) I've remembered it now though... I don't think the scanner has done a bad job - the rocks are not quite sharp on my monitor but you probably couldn't sharpen too much without introducing artifacts into the flowing water. I apologised for my scanner before really examining the picture - this is an older scan (before the dust built up and the scanner got knocked around a bit) and seems to be fine. My more recent scans are another matter - i've learnt a load about dust and scratch removal in the last few weeks... thanks billy -- I think nighttime is dark so you can imagine you fears with less distraction Billy Abbott billy at cowfish dot org dot uk

Hello Billy and welcome I'm pretty new here as well. I hope you're ready for the deluge of mail - it's a VERY active group, but you probably know that if you've been lurking for a while. Great photo. Welcome Billy. Beautiful photograph. If you live in Scotland you are one lucky photographer. I have lived in Ireland a few years back and I used to read Outdoor Photography there - it was constantly full of beautiful photographs (4x6 cameras) from the beautiful, Scottish nature. Looking foreward to seeing more photographs from you. Billy, G'day from Oz, good to have you aboard we need all the sanity we can muster these days. Clever that Mr Jolly, all my friends seem to be off buying Canon kit however as it's a damned site cheaper and easier to get here than the Pentax gear. Still Pentax kit has it's virtues, quality image making is one of them. So that is one green serene pic, Agfa Ultra 100 hey, it delivers plenty of punch saturation wise I assume. The last Ultra I used was the 50 and it was pretty difficult to scan even using a decent dedicated film scanner. All in all it's not a bad pic the only thing is that the veiling green makes it that little bit difficult to easily differentiate between the rocks and the foliage. Well done in any case especially if its one of your first. Don't get too locked in to the slow/shutter water thing, do try and experiment with faster shutter speeds too, sometimes the dynamics of the water flow is interesting too. Nice shot... I like the dead tree at the top. I might have cropped the scan until the small branches at the bottom and right are just out of the picture (those pesky things are always getting in the way with less than 100% viewfinder). It might also make the foreground rocks slightly more off center, which to my my mind's eye is pleasing. If you weren't using a polarizer it could help eliminate reflections on the foreground rocks and add a little saturation. That's my comments. A very pleasing shot. Tom C. The last Ultra I used was the 50 and it was pretty difficult to scan even using a decent dedicated film scanner. The print isn't quite this green - almost though. Unfortunately most of the rest of the pictures on the roll turned out to be rather dull colourwise (lack of forethough on what i'd be shooting), a peril of shooting scottish landscapes in february when there's nothing but rock and mud. All in all it's not a bad pic the only thing is that the veiling green makes it that little bit difficult to easily differentiate between the rocks and the foliage. Well done in any case especially if its one of your first. Thanks, I didn't notice (or really think about) the tree movement when taking the pic - that contributes a large amount to the overall greenness. The slower pictures I took had more of a rock/foliage contrast, but didn't do much justice to the water. Don't get too locked in to the slow/shutter water thing, do try and experiment with faster shutter speeds too, sometimes the dynamics of the water flow is interesting too. Worry not - I walked up the river a bit and tried shooting some fast shutter shots of the next set of rapids - unfortunately it was too dark under the canopy to get too many really fast shots. I'm still experimenting with faster shutters, although as yet without too much success. thanks, billy -- Transformers don't like AC, they like Energon Cubes... Billy: I like the photo you posted. It has a very peaceful, cooling feel to it. It might be better without the skinny tree trunk in the upper left, but, not having been there, I don't know that you could have done anything to eliminate it.
