Re: Making monopod out of tripod
You could check out the ProMaster line of tripods - their SystemPro models have a center post that detaches and expands into a monopod - and you end up with both tripod and monopod. The series 1 can be had for about $165 with a fairly substantial ball head, the series 2 for a little more. MSRP on their web site is, of course, more, and they don't show the ball head, but it's available. http://www.promaster.com/tripods.html Paul - Original Message - From: Ramesh Kumar [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, October 03, 2003 2:09 PM Subject: Re: Making monopod out of tripod Mat Maessen: Would be convenient as a monopod if it weren't for the handles protruding from the panhead. Re: MZ-6/ZX-L with FAJ lenses?
If it works the same as the ZX-7, you can leave the aperture ring in the A position (or in the case of the FAJ, it's always in A), set the mode to Av and select the aperture using left-right movement of the switch co-located with the shutter button. Re: Incident meter info needed
Frantisek - The Polaris now is made in three models. I have the one of the original models with a standard LCD for the digital display. Later they upgraded to a model with the LCD backlighted, making it a little easier to see in low light conditions. The latest model includes all the features of the earlier units plus the ability to make 5 degree spot readings. They are marketed here in the US by Omega Satter. I went to their web pages for information - http://www.omegasatter.com - but the link to Polaris meters yielded a blank page. I don't know who would have them for sale in Europe, but they are available via the internet from Adorama and BH Photo. I believe the price on the original model is now about 170usd, so even with shipping that would keep you in about the 200usd range. Don't give up on the Leitz yet. Dust build up over the years will sometimes gum up the shaft and bearings on the fan motor. Re: Driving to GFM
Bill - The Google route looks pretty good for the midwest. Your first bottleneck will be Minneapolis/St Paul, but if you hit it in the middle of the day you should be OK - avoid morning and evening rush hour. You can avoid Chicago altogether by taking I-39 from Rockford, IL down to Bloomington/Normal, then I-74 across to Indianapolis. If you don't mind going by way of Chicago, don't go through downtown like the map shows. Zoom in on the Chicago area and catch the Tri-State Tollway (I-294) which will take you around the city and hook back to I-94 again on the south side. Try to hit Chicago at mid-day. Rush hour, AM PM, is a bitch. Again, if you don't mind the Chicago traffic, when you get to Madison, go east to Milwaukee and we can probably find a spot for you on a couch for the night. If you can swing it, a Garmin C330 GPS would be invaluable. Good detail to the map, excellent directions and good route recalculation if you miss a turn. The map is pre-loaded and covers all of the US and the southern tier of the Canadian provinces. They've been selling for around 300USD around here. Let me know if you have any other questions. -P William Robb wrote: Hi List; When I travelled to GFM in 05, I braved the world of airlines and airport security, rental cars and supplementary insurance. A single light and a reflector may suit our needs, too. I'd rather not deal with the heat from tungsten lights, so it's either fluorescent continuous lighting or monoblocks. Current plans are to photograph the kids a lot, guests when they'll allow it, and a few models for some projects I'm considering. One or two people in the frame should be typical. As far as environment goes, we have 9 foot ceilings and enough space to move the camera up to about 20 feet from the sitter. Our house is almost a shotgun style, so width of the backdrop is an issue. Re: OT: An oddity
Seattle Film Works, Dale Labs and others were re-spooling EastmanColor 5254 and 5247 movie stock. It has a black anti-halation coating that is removed as part of the developing process. Re: Processing very old color movie film?
John - Unless you are *very* sure that the film has run all the way to the end, don't open the camera except in a darkroom or changing bag. Super 8 will be in a cartridge - standard 8mm is really double 8 - 16mm film w/8mm sprocket holes on a 25 ft reel. You exposed one side of it, then flipped it over to expose the other side. When processed, the lab slit it down the middle and spliced it to make one 8mm x 50 ft roll. If it's double 8, unless it's completely on one of the in-camera reels, you run the risk of losing several feet if you open it in the light. Once it's completely on one reel it's OK to remove in subdued light. -p [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: My dad found an old movie camera recently, and he is almost completely certain it contains unprocessed color movie film of my mom bringing me home from the hospital shortly after I was born in 1978. I'm not getting my hopes up, but it would be neat to see if anything came out. Does anyone know of any companies in the US that might be able to process this film? Here's what I know about it: - It's nearly 29 years old. - It is most likely color. - It's been stored in dark, cool places most of it's life. I don't know the brand, format (best guess is Kodak 8mm, since my dad has a couple reels of that stuff in other boxes) or any other technical details. Not entirely true, Grasshopper. A search of the NTSB General Aviation accident statistics for the four years 1998 - 2001 (the latest I was able to find) indicated only two aviation accidents in the Chicago area. One was clearly pilot error - the pilot was attempting to take off using less than full power; the other was of an indeterminate cause but runway length was more than adequate for the aircraft involved, a Beech King Air 200. As for the winds, you simply had to be competent at crosswind take-offs and landings and know the limitations of your piloting skills and the aircraft you're flying. *Most* aviation accidents are attributable to pilot error; errors in judgment and attempting to continue flight beyond the limits of your skills as an aviator. If that happens to occur during the take-off or landing phase of your flight, you can't really blame the airport. -p Aviation, to an even greater extent than the sea, is terribly unforgiving of any incapacity, carelessness, or neglect. I doubt they would have been able to taxi to any of these skyscrapers to do any damage. As a longtime Chicago resident, I'm very familiar with Meigs' reputation. As a longtime professional pilot so am I... Several local pilots I knew would have nothing to do with it. Apparently they were intelligent pilots and knew their limitations. Many pilots of single engine aircraft didn't like to fly into Meigs because the traffic pattern and approaches required that you spend a lot of time over Lake Michigan regardless of whether you were using runway 18 or 36. Approaching and departing traffic, whether single or multi-engine, was *never* routed over the city. -p Paul Paul Sorenson wrote: Not entirely true, Grasshopper. That made the mountains in shadow a little too dark and the sunlit ones still too light. I hit the mountains in shadow w/the erase tool at about 50% opacity and re-copied just the sunlit peaks to a third layer, applied the multiply blend mode again and flattened the image to a new jpg.
