FW: [pinhole-discussion] the Pinhole Polls are open...

2001-03-02 Thread Jessica Lysons
Here's my two cents on the date issue:
I love the energy and enthusiasm that everyone is showing about this. I
think we should plunge in and see what happens with a Spring 2001 date.
Though I think it's great to get the word out to as many people as possible,
it would also be great to see what is generated just from the folks on this
list alone.

This is slightly off-topic, but I think the point is relevant. I once read
an article arguing that non-profit comunity service organizations should
only get public funding for the first 5 years. The idea was that these
organizations are started by a group of people who see a need and have the
idealism and energy to try to fill that need. Everyone pitches in wherever
needed, it's chaos, and somehow, amazing feats are accomplished. Once
organizations have been around for 5 years, everyone starts to fill a
certain job descriptions and not want to step out of them, and some on the
great manic energy is lost (or exchanged for stability, which is also
important). While I ultimately stongly disagreed with the thesis of the
article, I think the point about the joy of something new and
fly-by-the-seat-of-it's-pants is well taken. It would be GREAT if this
pinhole day grew into something well-established, well-publicized and
efficient. But for this first year, maybe we should just dive in and see
what happens out of the mania.

I totally understand Jean's points (and those of others who have argued to
put this off a bit), and will be happy with whatever day is chosen. But
those are my thoughts, for your consideration.

Jessica

Hi all,

Considering the date for the first edition of the future Pinhole Day,
which
is one of the issues which we have to vote for and which is the most
discussed issue about Pinhole Polls until now, I would like, if you
allow
me, to add short comments.
It has been not even 3 weeks now since the idea of creating a Pinhole
Day
has been generated by Valentines' Day.
Such an idea, if we want to make it into a successful event, needs a
minimum of coordination, information spreading, technical preparation.
Even
if we do not have oversized ambitions (and don't worry, we definitely
have
not!), we discover everyday that the list of tasks to do is increasing
in
number, needs for help and volunteers and that it will take a lot of
energy
to have all the issues well mastered.
And of course, not everything is depending on the work of the members of
the
organizing team. It depends also on help of the members of the list (=
you!)
and on the reactivity of the external actors that we have to work with
if we
want to succeed. Do not forget that one of the main features of the
event is
to have a "world-wide" dimension; even if we know that we shall not have
participations from all parts of the world, we want to really place
this
event on an international basis. That alone requires distributing
spreading
tasks (translations, sending info to "target" organizations, contacts
with
local media, etc.) between volunteers and coordinating the coherence of
these tasks...
Publications of Press Release in various media supports must be
synchronized
with each publication or magazine editorial rhythm (often more than 5
weeks
for monthly mags...). Without taking care of these constraints, we shall
not
be able to reach our goals :
-have a large number of pinholers everywhere on Earth creating pinhole
pictures on the same day and loading them on the official Pinhole Day
site
-display on a quality site all the pictures made on pinhole Day so that
a
very large number of visitors can discover and/or appreciate the Pinhole
Day
exhibit.

It is why, taking in consideration all these elements , my preferences
go to
a distant date : 1st Sunday in June. Of course I may be wrong but I
truly
fear that choosing a closer date (April) does not allow to work in
appropriate conditions and that it leads to a very unsatisfactory
result.
On the opposite side, I would rather not wait for the fall (being
admitted
that Summer months are not a good choice for reasons already discussed
here) because I think It is too far and there is a risk that our
enthusiasm
will have difficulties to maintain at the top level we know at the
present
day! June seems realistic to me, even if we have still a lot of tasks to
execute!

In the Pinhole Polls at http://www.p at ???/discussion/polls.php
(closing date : Sunday 24:00 GMT), you will notice that there are 2
equivalent choices offered : Sunday June 3rd and First Sunday of
June(that
is June 3rd in 2001). First Sunday of June could become a regular basis
for
next years Pinhole Days. If you have not yet expressed your vote, I wish
these comments will help you to build up your choice.
In all cases, it is a democratic mode of taking decisions and I shall

April. It will be warm enough in the Northern Hemisphere and hopefully not
too cold yet for our brothers and sisters in the Southern Hemisphere.

Hi all pinholers on the list !

Please allow me to recommend to all of you who have not yet expressed
themselves about the future world wide pinhole day (temporary name) to do
it as soon as possible.
You have subscribed to the pinhole discussion list ! that means that by a
way or another, you are related to pinhole photography ! Maybe since
yesterday, maybe you began playing with tiny holes 60 years ago! You like to
create pinhole pictures and/or you like to look at other pinholers'
pictures. You believe in the "perfect" pinhole size calculated with maths
formulas or you just drill a hole in whatever old box stands in front of
you. You ... or you...
I don't mind. All I know is that we share our discoveries, our admirations,
our questions, our pleasures, our humour, our "special" visions of the world
on this list !
We are lucky for that. It is why plenty of us have thought that it would be
a good idea to share our luck with the "rest of the world" while acting all
together in a kind of giant worldwide game...
That was the World Pinhole Day act of birth less than 3 weeks ago...
Since then, some of us have tried to organize a little the things to help
transform a generous idea into an international event while never forgetting
that our only goal is to share the pleasure of pinhole photography and to
promote this not-so-well known practice of photography.
As we need to know your opinions about some major choices (name, date, etc.)
Pinhole polls have been open...
We could expect that nearly everybody on the list would vote because we are
ALL concerned by promoting and developing Pinhole photography... Many have
voted but not everyone! Please vote now and participate in the soon to come
1st World Pinhole day ! It is not a great effort to make and it will
certainly bring to yourself and the whole pinholers' community plenty,
plenty of
satisfactions, discoveries and fun...
Gregg Kemp announced that the PINHOLE POLLS will be CLOSED on SUNDAY, 24:00
GMT. Do not wait too late for giving us your vote !
We need everybody's vote to support our (= your) challenging new project !
"Rendez-vous" at
http://www.p at ???/discussion/polls.php

Merci à tous ! Thanks to all !
...and happy pinholing
Jean

P.S. : Apologies for my bad English writing; all that is important is the
"content" : sharing with each of you my pinhole passion!

2001-03-02 Thread Tina Martin
I use an Epson 760 for my quadtone printing with MIS quadtone ink and a
continuous ink system from nomorecarts.com. The Epson 760 is the 8 1/2 x 11
version of the 1160. They are being discontinued so can be found quite
cheaply, as can the 1160. Note that the 760 and 1160 do not use the new
"chip" cartridge, so a wide choice of 3rd party inks are available. The Cone
piezography system also works with the 760, but as Gregg says is pricey. If
you have questions, you can contact me offlist, since this isn't really
pinhole! It's a great system.

I've been following the Epson inkjet list for a couple of years and the
1160 model seems to be most highly recommended for image quality, and works
with Cone's Piezography stuff. New printers are coming out soon (as

Re: [pinhole-discussion] black and white printer

2001-03-02 Thread Thomas Harvey

Thanks. Can you suggest a printer which uses the quadtone inks? I've looked
at Cone's website and looked at the info on his inks.

The Epson 1160 seems to be the large format affordable printer of
choice for quadtone inks. I got a refurbished one for $154 + $37
shipping from ubid.com. They have them listed all the time; if you
are patient, you may find one for $135-145. I am setting it up for
color bulk archival inks (Generations from MediaStreet).

I bought an 860 printer (small format, otherwise like the 1160) for
$129 with free shipping from outpost.com. Epson has a $50 rebate
through 3/31/01 -- so net cost of $79. This one has the quad inks.

For both the 860 and 1160, I am using the continuous ink system from
MIS Associates. $68 for the hardware (bottles, tubing, etc.) and $52
four 4-oz bottles of quadtone inks (or $60 for the MediaStreet
color inks. By comparison, Jon Cone's Piezography quad inks are $260
for 4x4 bottles..

I have left my 750 as is for use with Epson ink cartridges. The
archival pigment-based color inks are not as vibrant as the dye-based
original inks. And I use the 750 for color glossy prints, because .
. .

The only other caveat is that archival color or quad inks do not
print well on glossy papers. Epson Archival Matte paper works well.
Cone's software ($295) seems reasonable if you use lots of papers,
because he supplies many profiles. (If you choose to afford his
inks). I am settling on a few papers.

Hope that helps -- and that not too many are bothered by the
off-topic discussion.

Tom

Some months ago, I tried to build a small spherical film plane camera around
a tennis -ball basis. I had cut a tennis ball in 2 halves, took one of these
and built a "pinhole lensboard" which I adapted on the half ball.
I did many tries to fix adequately photo paper (single weight) and film in
this spherical back but I never succeeded to get a regular surface : it is
too difficult to bend equally such a surface in all directions : I got
scratches, wrinkles, tears, everything except a plain surface, and though my
patience goes far (as most pinholers), I finally gave the ball tennis to ...
my grey parrot to play with.

Let's not over-think this idea. We're not looking for
the "best" pinhole photos ever taken, just pinhole
photos taken on the same day worldwide. If it takes
the rest of this month to get the word out, there will

I've only had the printer for 2 weeks so far, but I've been impressed
with the B&W capability of the Epson 875 DCS (which is the same
print engine and inks as the Epson 870). You have to tell the printer
to print the photo using color inks (so that it doesn't use just black)
and I haven't seen any color tinting show up. (I have only printed
very few B&W images as yet, but one reason I chose this printer
was that a couple of online reviews reported that it worked well for
printing B&W photos.)

The poll is supposedly for "the First World Wide Pinhole
Photography Day", so the intent SEEMS to be to pick a
date for this year rather thant to pick a date that we will
hav to stick to in the future.

I voted for the 29th of April because I knew that it would be
on a Sunday this year and there was no entry for "last Sunday
in April", which is not the same as "4th Sunday in April."
