Package: pulseaudio
Version: 5.0-13
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

If playing a sound (may or may not be a prerequisite) when the Pulseaudio
daemon is killed and respawned, it will become unusable. Any sounds thereafter
experience an extreme latency and small snippets ( 1 second) are looped over
and over rapidly. Changing volume becomes difficult as I assume the PA daemon
is choked and is struggling to keep up with requests.

My reproduction steps:
- Run Clementine (output via PulseAudio).
- Play song.
- Run 'pulseaudio --kill pulseaudio --start' as user.
- Clementine will fail to play anything else and get stuck at around 0:00 or
0:01, with a tiny snippet of the music being played over and over.
- Attempt to change volume. The 'volume change' sound in GNOME will loop over
and over rapidly and the volume bar and hotkeys will become unresponsive.
- Restart PA again. The problem doesn't go away.
- Reboot and the problem is fixed, until the next time.

This shouldn't happen. Ideally, you should be able to restart PA as many times
as you want at whatever speed and never have it become unusable.

Snippet from syslog is attached.

Thank you,
David.

Dear Maintainer,

I just installed pavucontrol. Using Xfce and choosing rodent -
Multimedia - PulseAudio Volume Control, I get a pop-up:

Volume Control

Connection to PulseAudio failed. Automatic retry in 5s

In this case this is likely because PULSE_SERVER in the Environment/X11 Root
Windows Properties
or default-server in client.conf is misconfigured.
This situation can also arrise when PulseAudio crashed and left stale details
in the X11 Root Window.
If this is the case, then PulseAudio should autospawn again, or if this not
configured you should
run start-pulseaudio-x11 manually.

I have not modified /etc/pulse/client.conf:

# egrep -v '^(#|$)' /etc/pulse/client.conf
; default-sink =
; default-source =
; default-server =
; default-dbus-server =
; autospawn = yes
; daemon-binary = /usr/bin/pulseaudio

; enable-shm = yes
; shm-size-bytes = 0 # setting this 0 will use the system-default, usually 64

; auto-connect-localhost = no
; auto-connect-display = no

I am unable to locate start-pulseaudio-x11:

Please advise.

David

The problem is that you do not have pulseaudio installed. Pavucontrol
in Wheezy is missing the Recommends on pulseaudio, which is why you
did not get it installed automatically (this has been fixed since in
the testing distribution).

Dear maintainers,

I am using a Debian Jessie workstation with GDM and Gnome. I log in using
Kerberos, and my home folder is mounted with AFS.
I have full access on my home folder :

The fs la command in my home folder returns :
Access list for . is
Normal rights:
  system:administrators rlidwka
  system:anyuser rl
  ymass rlidwka

In this setup, PulseAudio can't start, as I can see in syslog :
pulseaudio[4554]: [pulseaudio] core-util.c: Home directory not accessible:
Permission non accordée

The same error appears if I tried to start pulseaudio in a terminal.

Maybe I could use PulseAudio as a system-wide daemon
(http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/PulseAudio/Documentation/User/SystemWide/),
but I do not think it is an apropriate setup in my case.

Thanks for your time and work,

Is your home directory owned by your user? Pulseaudio checks that and
returns EACCESS in that case. You can check using the stat command.

 Thanks for you fast answer,

Indeed it was not the case: Unix permissions were all wrong on my home
 directory.
Now I corrected everything, PulseAudio starts: you can close this bug.

The strange thing is that there were no problems with other softwares,
 only PulseAudio was complaining.

Pulse may be a bit more picky than other softwares.

In any case, I'm glad it now works, and I'm closing the bug.

Dear Maintainer,
*** Please consider answering these questions, where appropriate ***

   * What led up to the situation?
On a two user machine with two soundcards - onboard and usb - sound sometimes
stops working after user switching. Also pulseaudio doesn't yield usb card
control to jackd server when I try to start it. It seems that if
DISALLOW_MODULE_LOADING is set to 1, then module-udev-detect and module-
jackdbus-detect won't load causing that behaviour.
   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
 ineffective)?
Once I realized DISALLOW_MODULE_LOADING was set twice, one in
/etc/default/pulseaudio and other in /etc/init.d/pulseaudio I tried firts
'dpkg-reconfigure pulseaudio' but it did'nt nothing. Then I change by hand the
value of DISALLOW_MODULE_LOADING in the two files to 0.
   * What was the outcome of this action?
When I tried 'dpkg-reconfigure pulseaudio' It only warned me that pulseaudio
was configured as per user session.
Changing both DISALLOW_MODULE_LOADING assignementsto 0 seemed to work fine by
now.
   * What outcome did you expect instead?
I expected that 'dpkg-reconfigure pulseaudio' had done that work for me, I
find the warning message Pulseaudio is configured as per user session
annoying and useless. It warns me also each time pulseaudio starts, but I don't
understand why, since according to website is the right way to configure, and
it is what I want.
I expected also to have only one assignement of DISALLOW_MODULE_LOADING in
/etc/default/pulseaudio. I find confusing having the overriding one in
/etc/init.d/pulseaudio.

Hi!

In systemd v209, released over a year ago, the various libsystemd-* libraries
(libsystemd-journal.so, libsystemd-login.so, libsystem-daemon.so,
libsystemd-id128.so) were merged into a single libsystemd.so library to reduce
code duplication and avoid cyclic dependencies [1].

Your package declares a build-dependency on either libsystemd-daemon-dev,
libsystemd-login-dev or libsystemd-journal-dev.

Please update your package so it can be built against libsystemd.

Updating the configure check / build system
===
If your package use pkg-config and autotools, a typical configure check
looks like:

 PKG_CHECK_MODULES(FOO, libsystemd-login)
All you need to do, is change that to
 PKG_CHECK_MODULES(FOO, libsystemd)

If there are checks for libsystemd-journal, libsystemd-login and
libsystemd-journal, you can merge that into a single check:

 PKG_CHECK_MODULES(FOO, libsystemd-login)
 PKG_CHECK_MODULES(BAR, libsystemd-daemon)
 PKG_CHECK_MODULES(BAZ, libsystemd-journal)
=
 PKG_CHECK_MODULES(FOO, libsystemd)

BAR_{CFLAGS,LIBS} and BAZ_{CFLAGS,LIBS} need to be updated accordingly.

If you/upstream wants to support building against older versions of systemd,
you can update the configure check as follows:

 PKG_CHECK_MODULES(FOO, libsystemd-login)
=
 PKG_CHECK_MODULES(FOO, libsystemd,, [PKG_CHECK_MODULES(FOO, libsystemd-login)])

See [2] as an example how to do that.

Updating Build-Depends
==
Please replace the Build-Depends on libsystemd-*-dev with libsystemd-dev [3].
I would recommend against adding alternative Build-Depends against the old
dev packages. This is not necessary, since libsystemd-dev is already provided
in jessie.

Backports
=
Debian jessie already ships with libsystemd-dev, so this change is safe
regarding backports.

Upstream

Please consider forwarding this upstream. In some cases upstream might already
have a fix for that

Thanks for considering.

Michael,
on behalf of the pkg-systemd team.

The version in experimental already checks for libsystemd instead of
the various parts, in the new upstream version.

Package: pulseaudio
Version: 6.0-2
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

Dear Maintainer,

I have an up to date Debian Sid installation and after the most recent
package upgrade today, the audio doesn't work on boot. The audio device
is not detected and listed in GNOME sound settings. But I can see it listed
in /proc/asound/cards. It doesn't work unless I kill and restart pulseaudio.

Dear Maintainer,

When I connect my bluetooth speakers (and when I'm not affected by bug 776632,
so the speakers are identified as audio output device), they are used for audio
output immediately – and the volume is always set to 100%. So it's always a
bad idea to connect my bluetooth speakers while listening to music, even if I
could lower the volume immediately (see bug 776636).

I would expect pulseaudio to either preserve the volume I used on my other
audio output device (before I connected my bluetooth speakers) or to use a
moderate default volume level.

Please tell me if I can provide any more useful information.

In Ubuntu, we've applied the attached patch to achieve the following:

  * debian/patches/0004-Show-install-only-with-active-packagekit.patch
+ Show the install buttons only when PackageKit is running. Otherwise
these buttons silently fail (LP: #489531). A functionally-equivalent
patch is in upstream git; this can be dropped in the next upstream
  version.

We thought you might be interested in doing the same.

Package: pavucontrol
Version: 2.0-3
Severity: normal

Some of the programs name their streams with somewhat long names. The
same applies to some device names. This results in excessively long
labels/buttons that prevent window from being resized down to some
sane width.

Possible solutions,

 1. elide long strings that do not fit in stream names or device
 names.
 2. wrap long names

Attached is just one example of a long line.

- Adam

There is a new upstream release. Filing this so we don't forget. I

that.

Subject: [pulseaudio-discuss] [ANNOUNCE] PAVUControl 3.0 released!
To: General PulseAudio Discussion pulseaudio-disc...@lists.freedesktop.org

Despite being just PulseAudio's sidekick, Pavucontrol has attracted 14
contributors since last release, saving Pavucontrol from falling into
the pit of bitrotting software. Thanks to all of you!

Here it is:

http://freedesktop.org/software/pulseaudio/pavucontrol/pavucontrol-3.0.tar.xz
MD5: 176308d2c03f8f3a7b2bd4f4d284fe71
SHA1: df427f09dbb14ca3200a6eb5e53f9d4138648b5b

Shortlog attached - but we have a few new errors handled in better
ways, some window sizing management, device visibility is remembered,
among other things.

Enjoy!

I'm using a default installation on wheezy/gnome, set up as a laptop.

The device works fine on another system, a server with a pulseaudio
daemon process set up manually. On the default desktop gnome setup,
however, I'm finding pulseaudio highly unreliable with a USB device,
Creative Soundblaster X-Fi HD. Other people report similar problems.

It has worked occasionally, but usually it doesn't

Sometimes I see this error in dmesg or console:

usb_set_interface failed

and sometimes /var/log/user.log contains messages such as

module-alsa-card.c: Failed to find a working profile.

I've tried deleting ~/.pulse* and rebooting, doesn't help

I've also noticed that if I try to kill the pulseaudio process (e.g. to
try changing something in /etc/pulse/default.pa) it tries to start 5
more copies and logs a heap of errors to /var/log/user.log - this seems
like some issue with the restart mechanism. In any case, having it
restart automatically is quite annoying when troubleshooting.

Hi Matthias,

I've merged in #756860 (X-fi USB not working on ARM) as the symptoms
look exactly like those on my Intel-based laptop in this bug #704305

Just upgraded the laptop to jessie and the problems are still there
 using this device.

Changing the resample method from speex-float to speex-fixed resolved this
 issue
 for me
 (http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/pulseaudio-discuss/2014-August/021375.html).

In Jessie, speex-fixed is the default resampler on ARM, so for me, pulseaudio
now works in its default configuration and from my point of view, this bug
 (#756850) can be closed.

Thanks for reporting back here. I'm closing the bug.

Hi,

I guess that bluez4 support could be disabled as it's not in the archive
anymore.

It gives scary messages in the logs like:

[pulseaudio] bluez4-util.c: org.bluez.Manager.GetProperties() failed:
org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.UnknownMethod: Method GetProperties with signature
 on interface org.bluez.Manager doesn't exist

Package: pulseaudio
Version: 6.0-2
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

After a system upgrade ~2 weeks ago, my audio system started to hang, and I can
no longer play any audio files or videos. I'm also unable to reboot or
shutdown, because the system hangs indefinitely waiting for the pulseaudio
process to terminate (although SysRq+B still works).

Things I have tried (without success):

* Restarting/killing pulseaudio server (can't be killed)
* Changing kernels
* Removing alsa
* Changing to system-wide pulseaudio
* Adding 'tsched=0' to udev/hal-detect lines in default.pa/system.pa
* Switching window managers (KDE - new KDE / plasma, MATE)

I would like to be able to play audio, as it is useful for video conferencing
on this computer.

Here are some kernel lines that may be useful (notice the 120s gap between
successive messages):

I don't see why,
with a virgin installation of pulseaudio
one must get

XDG_RUNTIME_DIR (/tmp) is not owned by us (uid 1000), but by uid 0! (This could
e g happen if you try to connect to a non-root PulseAudio as a root user, over
the native protocol. Don't do that.)

when running
$ pavucontrol

Also the message makes it seem wrong that /tmp is owned by root, and
some users will try to change the owner of /tmp.

--- Begin Message ---
Ah it seems I set XDG_RUNTIME_DIR in .bashrc long ago.

OK I took it out and rebooted
and now the bug is gone! Closing.

(However I notice when not me but root runs pavucontrol, it never
connects...)--- End Message ---

Package: pulseaudio
Version: 7.0-1
Severity: wishlist

Pulseaudio 7 now supports soxr as a resampler, but Debian's pulseaudio is built
without soxr support. I discovered this problem because pulseaduio started to
crash for me when I selected a soxr resampler:

Package: pulseaudio-module-bluetooth
Version: 5.99.2-2
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

Dear Maintainer,

   * What led up to the situation?
I turn on the bluetooth headset
   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
 ineffective)?
The bluetooth device(speaker headset) pair and connect correctly
   * What was the outcome of this action?
Nothing happen in pulse audio
   * What outcome did you expect instead?
I expected to play sound in the bluetooth device via pulse audio

I upgraded to the last experimental version of the package but I have the same
result.

a description and a workaround is here:

thank you,

A. Bresci

Using $alsamixer, then F6, then select "0 HDA Intel" and un-muting S/PDIF

changes are lost after a reboot.

If you install pavucontrol and configure it to use HDMI, the changes are
saved, but the keyboard multi-media controls have no effect on pulseaudio

Please note pavucontrol worked fine in Wheezy. Both Jessie and Wheezy use

pulseaudio and pavucontrol have never handled multimedia keys. It is
up to your desktop environment (Xfce) to do that. So it looks like
Xfce used to support pulseaudio but now it doesn't.

Because this is not a bug in pavucontrol, I am closing this report.

Justification: fails to build from source but built in the past.

Pulseaudio FTBFS on alpha due to the volume-test test failing. From
the build log [1]:

FAIL: volume-test
=

Running suite(s): Volume
Attenuation of sample 1 against 32767: -90.3087 dB
Smallest possible attenuation > 0 applied to 32767: 0

tests/volume-test.c:107:E:volume:volume_test:0: (after this point) Received
signal 8 (Floating point exception)
FAIL volume-test (exit status: 1)

This test fails because of the addition of two infinities is
attempted when compiling volume-test with -ffast-math and on Alpha
any attempt at using a non-finite number when compiled with
-ffast-math results in a floating-point exception. As the gcc
manual states, using infinities in floating-point arithmetic with
-ffast-math may result in incorrect operation!

For volume-test to work on Alpha one of the two following conditions
must be met:

1) Do not compile volume-test with -ffast-math so that infinities are
supported properly.

2) Don't use infinities in the test suite! (The infinities occur
because a zero volume is converted to dB, i.e. -infinity dB, then
two volumes, both of -infinity dB, are added. Boom!)

Cheers
Michael.
