Any sounds thereafter experience an extreme latency and small snippets ( 1 second) are looped over and over rapidly. Changing volume becomes difficult as I assume the PA daemon is choked and is struggling to keep up with requests. My reproduction steps: - Run Clementine (output via PulseAudio). - Play song. - Run 'pulseaudio --kill pulseaudio --start' as user. - Clementine will fail to play anything else and get stuck at around 0:00 or 0:01, with a tiny snippet of the music being played over and over. - Attempt to change volume. The 'volume change' sound in GNOME will loop over and over rapidly and the volume bar and hotkeys will become unresponsive. - Restart PA again. The problem doesn't go away. - Reboot and the problem is fixed, until the next time. This shouldn't happen. Ideally, you should be able to restart PA as many times as you want at whatever speed and never have it become unusable. Snippet from syslog is attached. Thanks for you fast answer, Indeed it was not the case: Unix permissions were all wrong on my home directory. Now I corrected everything, PulseAudio starts: you can close this bug. On a two user machine with two soundcards - onboard and usb - sound sometimes stops working after user switching. Also pulseaudio doesn't yield usb card control to jackd server when I try to start it. It seems that if DISALLOW_MODULE_LOADING is set to 1, then module-udev-detect and module- jackdbus-detect won't load causing that behaviour. * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or ineffective)? Once I realized DISALLOW_MODULE_LOADING was set twice, one in /etc/default/pulseaudio and other in /etc/init.d/pulseaudio I tried firts 'dpkg-reconfigure pulseaudio' but it did'nt nothing. Then I change by hand the value of DISALLOW_MODULE_LOADING in the two files to 0. * What was the outcome of this action? When I tried 'dpkg-reconfigure pulseaudio' It only warned me that pulseaudio was configured as per user session. Changing both DISALLOW_MODULE_LOADING assignementsto 0 seemed to work fine by now. * What outcome did you expect instead? I expected that 'dpkg-reconfigure pulseaudio' had done that work for me, I find the warning message Pulseaudio is configured as per user session annoying and useless. It warns me also each time pulseaudio starts, but I don't understand why, since according to website is the right way to configure, and it is what I want. I expected also to have only one assignement of DISALLOW_MODULE_LOADING in /etc/default/pulseaudio. I find confusing having the overriding one in /etc/init.d/pulseaudio. -- System Information: Debian Release: 7.7 APT prefers stable APT policy: (800, 'stable') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 3.2.0-4-amd64 (SMP w/8 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=es_ES.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=es_ES.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Versions of packages pulseaudio depends on: ii adduser 3.113+nmu3 ii consolekit0.4.5-3.1 ii libasound21.0.25-4 ii libasound2-plugins1.0.25-2 ii libc6 2.13-38+deb7u6 ii libcap2 1:2.22-1.2 ii libdbus-1-3 1.6.8-1+deb7u4 ii libfftw3-33.3.2-3.1 ii libgcc1 1:4.7.2-5 ii libice6 2:1.0.8-2 ii libltdl7 2.4.2-1.1 ii liborc-0.4-0 1:0.4.16-2 ii libpulse0 2.0-6.1 ii libsamplerate00.1.8-5 ii libsm62:1.2.1-2 ii libsndfile1 1.0.25-5 ii libspeexdsp1 1.2~rc1-7 ii libstdc++64.7.2-5 ii libsystemd-daemon044-11+deb7u4 ii libsystemd-login0 44-11+deb7u4 ii libtdb1 1.2.10-2 ii libudev0 175-7.2 ii libwebrtc-audio-processing-0 0.1-2 ii libx11-6 2:1.5.0-1+deb7u1 ii libx11-xcb1 2:1.5.0-1+deb7u1 ii libxcb1 1.8.1-2+deb7u1 ii libxtst6 2:1.2.1-1+deb7u1 ii lsb-base 4.1+Debian8+deb7u1 ii udev 175-7.2 Versions of packages pulseaudio recommends: ii gstreamer0.10-pulseaudio 0.10.31-3+nmu1 ii pulseaudio-module-x11 2.0-6.1 ii rtkit 0.10-2+wheezy1 Versions of packages pulseaudio suggests: ii paman 0.9.4-1 ii paprefs 0.9.10-1 ii pavucontrol 1.0-1 ii pavumeter 0.9.3-4 ii pulseaudio-utils 2.0-6.1 -- Configuration Files: /etc/default/pulseaudio changed: PULSEAUDIO_SYSTEM_START=0 DISALLOW_MODULE_LOADING=0 /etc/init.d/pulseaudio changed: DAEMON=/usr/bin/pulseaudio PIDDIR=/var/run/pulse PIDFILE=$PIDDIR/pid DAEMONUSER=pulse PATH=/sbin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin test -x $DAEMON || exit 0 .. /lib/lsb

In systemd v209, released over a year ago, the various libsystemd-* libraries (libsystemd-journal.so, libsystemd-login.so, libsystem-daemon.so, libsystemd-id128.so) were merged into a single libsystemd.so library to reduce code duplication and avoid cyclic dependencies [1]. Your package declares a build-dependency on either libsystemd-daemon-dev, libsystemd-login-dev or libsystemd-journal-dev. Please update your package so it can be built against libsystemd. Updating the configure check / build system === If your package use pkg-config and autotools, a typical configure check looks like: PKG_CHECK_MODULES(FOO, libsystemd-login) All you need to do, is change that to PKG_CHECK_MODULES(FOO, libsystemd) If there are checks for libsystemd-journal, libsystemd-login and libsystemd-journal, you can merge that into a single check: PKG_CHECK_MODULES(FOO, libsystemd-login) PKG_CHECK_MODULES(BAR, libsystemd-daemon) PKG_CHECK_MODULES(BAZ, libsystemd-journal) = PKG_CHECK_MODULES(FOO, libsystemd) BAR_{CFLAGS,LIBS} and BAZ_{CFLAGS,LIBS} need to be updated accordingly. If you/upstream wants to support building against older versions of systemd, you can update the configure check as follows: PKG_CHECK_MODULES(FOO, libsystemd-login) = PKG_CHECK_MODULES(FOO, libsystemd,, [PKG_CHECK_MODULES(FOO, libsystemd-login)]) See [2] as an example how to do that. Updating Build-Depends == Please replace the Build-Depends on libsystemd-*-dev with libsystemd-dev [3]. I would recommend against adding alternative Build-Depends against the old dev packages. This is not necessary, since libsystemd-dev is already provided in jessie. Backports = Debian jessie already ships with libsystemd-dev, so this change is safe regarding backports. Upstream Please consider forwarding this upstream. In some cases upstream might already have a fix for that Thanks for considering. Michael, on behalf of the pkg-systemd team. So it's always a bad idea to connect my bluetooth speakers while listening to music, even if I could lower the volume immediately (see bug 776636). I would expect pulseaudio to either preserve the volume I used on my other audio output device (before I connected my bluetooth speakers) or to use a moderate default volume level. The device works fine on another system, a server with a pulseaudio daemon process set up manually. On the default desktop gnome setup, however, I'm finding pulseaudio highly unreliable with a USB device, Creative Soundblaster X-Fi HD. Other people report similar problems. It has worked occasionally, but usually it doesn't Sometimes I see this error in dmesg or console: usb_set_interface failed and sometimes /var/log/user.log contains messages such as module-alsa-card.c: Failed to find a working profile. I've tried deleting ~/.pulse* and rebooting, doesn't help I've also noticed that if I try to kill the pulseaudio process (e.g. to try changing something in /etc/pulse/default.pa) it tries to start 5 more copies and logs a heap of errors to /var/log/user.log - this seems like some issue with the restart mechanism. In any case, having it restart automatically is quite annoying when troubleshooting. ---End Message--- ---BeginMessage--- Hi Matthias, On 31 May 2015 at 13:42, Matthias Großmann gross...@googlemail.com wrote: I've merged in #756860 (X-fi USB not working on ARM) as the symptoms look exactly like those on my Intel-based laptop in this bug #704305 Just upgraded the laptop to jessie and the problems are still there using this device. Changing the resample method from speex-float to speex-fixed resolved this issue for me (http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/pulseaudio-discuss/2014-August/021375.html). I'm also unable to reboot or shutdown, because the system hangs indefinitely waiting for the pulseaudio process to terminate (although SysRq+B still works). Things I have tried (without success): * Restarting/killing pulseaudio server (can't be killed) * Changing kernels * Removing alsa * Changing to system-wide pulseaudio * Adding 'tsched=0' to udev/hal-detect lines in default.pa/system.pa * Switching window managers (KDE - new KDE / plasma, MATE) I would like to be able to play audio, as it is useful for video conferencing on this computer. As the gcc manual states, using infinities in floating-point arithmetic with -ffast-math may result in incorrect operation! For volume-test to work on Alpha one of the two following conditions must be met: 1) Do not compile volume-test with -ffast-math so that infinities are supported properly. 2) Don't use infinities in the test suite! (The infinities occur because a zero volume is converted to dB, i.e. -infinity dB, then two volumes, both of -infinity dB, are added. Boom!) Cheers Michael.
