 The next Ebay?

To raise money for Twangfest (in the spirit of
 all those PBS fundraisers), we're
 pulling together an internet auction.

We plan to hold the auction during the first
week of May. It will be run off the Twangfest
web site. Details for that will follow.

Right now we are trolling for donations.
We already have a few very impressive
items in the vault (items autographed
by some pretty well-known artists, who
also happen to be fictional future ex-husbands
 to a few P2 gals. g).

For example, the Sovines are donating
one of their snazzy tuxedo jackets (worn
on the cover of their soon to be released
cd) and a canned ham. Fear and Whiskey
are donating a limited edition FW baseball
cap designed by Kinky Friedman. Jerry Curry
is donating that hideously ugly shirt
that's been talked about so much on the
Fluff list. Bill "The Sliver" Silvers is donating one
of his purses. CK promises to give us a sweatpant
leg hat. Maybe Shane will donate a case of fluff.
Twangfest will donate one all access backstage
pass and badge (Neal?). Alex promises to buy
a round of shots for the highest bidder's favorite band.
Get the picture? We need stuff.
No item is too trivial or, well, stupid.

We'd like to auction off P2 band cd/tapes,
t-shirts, bumper stickers, general swag, etc.
We'll probably auction them off in lots of 5 or so.
 If every P2 band could
donate a cd and t-shirt or whatever, it would be
a beautiful thing. The Twang Gods and Goddesses
would surely smile down upon you.

All you record labels, music stores, publications,
etc. out there, I'm sure you can find something to give us.
 How about a gift certificate?

So, if anyone has anything to offer, please contact
us. Remember, we know your email addresses.
If we don't hear from you, we'll come a callin'.

This is going to be a lot of fun. We promise.
Keep an eye open for updates.

Thanks for your time and thanks for the help!

Sheryl Crow does a very creditable duet with Emmylou on the forthcoming Gram
tribute (anyone have an advance of this yet?) Emmylou Harris was interviewed
on radio 2 (UK) last night, and they played that track and a weird and
wonderful version of Ooh Las Vegas by a distinctly ambient Cowboy Junkies.
Sounds like it should be a great album. I'm bummed they didnt play the Welch
and Rawlings' Hickory Wind. Is there a release date yet for this?

It gets bumped each month. Current story sez July 13th. And it's not
even on Watermelon!!

Willis and Robison

1999-04-10 Thread Bill Lavery

A couple of years ago Kelly Willis and Bruce Robison were on World Cafe
promoting Bruce's Wrapped CD which was new at the time. They performed
a duet of the title song that was great.

Do any of the radio types on the list have access to this recording?
Please reply off list.

Thanks

Me? I lucked out at Big Lots one time where they were selling jewel cases 4
for $1!! (I loaded up!). Also, I've seen lots (of 50-100) of jewel cases
being hocked on ebay (of course)...and my local Disc Go Round franchise
carries all sorts of pretty colors...but I'd recommend getting the "p2
 discount" from Mr. Lavery ;)

Don't know about the coloured ones but usually the best deals are at
computer stores rather than CD stores.

OK, OK, finally I just have to ask "WHY?!!!" I just don't get it. Why do
people love for country or alt.country bands or so-called alt.country bands
to do covers of godawful cheesy rock songs? Why do people respond to these
more than they do to the, OK, I'm going to say it, "real" songs?

 Two reasons I think.
 1. If you do like the twang--then these covers arrive as an incongruous
 SURPRISE. You get a response.
 2. For those at these alt.country shows who DON'T actually like twang but
only the tiniest rock and roll allusions to it (and they're always afoot),
it gives them something they actually relate to.

Very well put Barry. I think the Flatirons doing Crazy Train certainly
qualifies for the incongruous surprise category.

Yes, despite our habit of ritually debunking Jeff Lynne, it would be wrong
to eliminate him because of a number of fine things he's done, not least
the Roy Orbison recordings Dina mentions.

There's also "Brontasaurus," by The Move g.

Not to take anything away from Lynne but we should give proper credit
here. This is essentially a Roy Wood number, both as writer and
singer. Lynne only played on it, having just joined the band. Things
got more to a 50-50 split on the next album, Message From the Country or
Split Ends depending on when and where you bought it, and of course the
first Electric Light Orchestra album which was basically the Move with
strings.

I suspect he is simply fascinated with the Hunter S Thompson/Duke

he has any experience as a globe trotting drug running gun for hire.
But I could be wrong.

I'll Sleep When I'm Dead is a fine collection, but it lacks some of the
strongest songs from his 1982 album The Envoy, including "Charlie's

nor his excellent live record from 1980 (Stand in the Fire). I've been
waiting for those two to come out since I first purchased a cd player
back in 1987. The wait continues...

I love this package. To me it demonstates a consistency in style that
spans quite a bit of time without regard to his populartity at any point
in time. In other words, this is what Warren does, and has done take it
or leave it. Unlike many other career spanning double CDs, you don't
feel a need to skip the first five or six songs or the last five or six
songs. Like you might with the Edmunds package or the j. Geils one.

BTW, I saw someone selling a vinyl copy of Stand In The Fire on eBay the
other day.

Mr. Bad Example, as good as anything he ever did. Way underrated. Can

The promo angle makes sense but "record club material"? How can that be
 when
they sell a substantial share of all the product? I've never heard THAT
 before.

I believe that there are no royalties paid on the 'come on' offers, the
buy ten for the price of one. Royalties paid for the rest. Now I don't
know if it is at the same rate.
