Re: Digital camera for 3400

2003-01-06 Thread Tim Allen
I use a new Kodak DX4330 which is great camera. Primarily it's plugged into
my G4 using the Dock, but for my 3400 I bought a PC Card adaptor on ebay for
£18 that takes everything except compact flash - those readers are even
cheaper. Speed is about the same as USB and it works a treat. The files are
straight JPEG's and I use JPEGView or Picture Viewer to view and Photoshop 6
to edit. Don't feel you have to buy an older camera just for the
connectivity. A serial connection is hellishly slow anyway.

Tim.

I just leave my battery in all the time on my 3400c and mainly run it off
AC. I bought it second-hand and the battery seems to give about an hour -
they're much better than the so-called intelligent batteries in the 500
series and seem to suffer less problems. Batteries for the 5300 will also
work in the 3400 but don't last as long.

Re: PB 540c modem gone bad??

2003-01-06 Thread Rick Delzeith
Try here for the GV software

Rick

I was given a PB 540c that was having a consistent (Epson) printer
connection issue. After a number of attempts to resolve the issue, we
decided the best option was to do a clean install of the OS (was 7.5.3, now
7.6) and this resolved the printer connection issues. We reformatted the HD,
then installed 7.6. A new problem seems to have arisen - we don't seem to be
able to use the modem. Previously we used AOL 3.0 and it accessed the modem
fine. But now we are unable to get it to work at all. My suspicion is the
modem initialization is failing, but nothing we have tried works. I was able
to install AOL 4.0, which has better automated options for dealing with
modems and it is unable to find the modem (using 4.0 was a suggestion from
AOL tech support).

I'm hard pressed to think the modem has gone bad suddenly, but everything I
try seems to suggest that. Any clues any one has to offer?

P.S. I had copied over modem, TCP/IP, AOL prefs, etc from the original
system from the complete CD backup we did, but that did us no good and AOL
tech support stated it wouldn't use those prefs until it was logged in to
the account the first time - something we've not been able to accomplish.

TIA,

Mark

There's been a lot about batteries on this list so if you can access the archives
you'll find a wealth of information. But to summarize it, at least once a week (once
a month at the very least) unplug the AC and use the battery until you get the warning
message that the computer is about to go into a forced sleep mode unless you plug it
in. Then let the battery fully charge. Also see Sionnach's recommendation about
topping it off once it's fully charged.

What is the best practice, especially for the older ones? Both 3400s

It IS a li-ion, so I shouldn't let it discharge??? I should just keep

on battery once a month and recharge? Where is the certain point?

I did go to the archive but there is so much there that I get distracted

Digital Camera and Powerbook

2003-01-06 Thread pook la roux
Hi. Normally I'm pretty quiet because I don't really
have a lot of Mac wisdom to share, but here's my
digital camera situation:

I have an Olympus D-40. It is small, cute, works like
a charm, and I'm the envy of all my digital
photographer pals (which kind of makes up for the fact
that I didn't really get a good deal pricewise on the
camera...)

My 5300 does not have usb, so I knew I was going to
have to use a pc card or floppy adapter. I don't know
anything about pc cards, or where to get them, so I
focussed on the floppy adapters, which seemed to be
available everywhere. First I bought the Sony floppy
adapter that was referenced in the Olympus
documentation. When I got it home, I discovered that
it doesn't work in on PPC's, which rules out my PB.

I was also then shocked to find out that I couldn't
hook the camera up thru the usb to my desktop system
(which is a PPC 6500) because my desktop system's usb
hardware wasn't factory installed. It just refuses to
work.

So I went out and got the Fuji floppy adapter on the
advice of one of my pro photo pals. I was in a panic
again when I found that it couldn't be used on the
5300. Sigh!

Luckily, the Fuji floppy adapter works with my desktop
system, and that is how I port pictures in. What's not
so good is that the floppy adpater only handles
smartmedia up to 64mb, while the camera will take the
larger cards.

This has been okay, it gets the job done. It's slow, I
can't use some of the neaty keen features on my
camera, but it does do the basic job.

I don't really have an easily portable or direct way
of getting my pictures on the pb, which is kind of
what I intended all along.

I'd love feedback from anyone who actually has
experience using a pc card smartcard reader or hooking
a newer camera to an older pb with a pc card usb. A
pro photographer I know says that she refuses to use
pc card media readers because they fry her cards and
make them impossible to use in her camera. Knock wood,
my floppy adapter hasn't done this to me yet. But what
she said made me a bit wary of spending good moolah
for another kind of adapter.

I've no clue what's wrong with your friends system, but I've NEVER had a
problem with my $12 Sandisk flash pcmcia adapter on either a 5300 or a
540C, nor have lots and lots of other folks including professional
photographers.

Highly recommended.

Also, if the card is usable on the Mac, it would be usable in the
camera...she may have to re-format the card in the camera.

Smartmedia tends to be flakier in general than flash...I personally
wouln't buy a camera that used it, especially that 'secure media' drm
crap they're foisting on consumers. It's entirely possible that this is
the problem your friend is having, and in that case, the beef isn't with
the pcmcia adapter, but the manufacturer of the card.

Re: 5300 battery

2003-01-06 Thread Cathy Welsh

On Sunday, January 5, 2003, at 01:42 PM, victoria brandon wrote:

How long should a battery be able to keep a sleeping PB going without
 running out of juice?

(snip)

Hi Victoria. As you know, I recently got an Apple- refurbished, sealed
5300cs, so, presumably, the battery could have been sitting in the
carton for 5 years. After a few reconditioning cycles, I think it's a
good as it'll be and I get (using Jeremy's CSM) an average of 1 1/2
hrs. of use including a few floppy disk accesses interspersed over an
average of 24- 48 hrs. of sleep time. Because I have the luxury of a
back- up battery, I never plug it in unless recharging overnight after
the battery depletes. I'm kind of fastidious when it comes to batteries
and back- up as you might gather as you read on;)

So this morning, after about 12 hours sleeping (not plugged in), it
 woke up
OK on the battery, but only lasted ten minutes or so before running
 clear
down to nothing. Is this at all normal?

I don't understand the reporting system used by either Apple's or
Jeremy's CSMs and wether their respective accuracies (or lack thereof)
are because of the limitations of the software or because of difficulty
forecasting these NiMH batteries, but I also will get flaky time
remaining and percent full reports. Often, while the battery is
showing anywhere from a 30- 70%, I will suddenly get the low battery
warning and then I know I only have a minute or two to save my work and
the PB shuts itself down abruptly. The same applies to my new battery,
but everything (life left, time remaining when I get the low battery
warning and the accuracy of Apple's estimated time, etc.) is doubled.
Anyway, using Jeremy's historical time remaining is pretty dead- on
accurate in seeing how much time I have left.

  It's been my understanding that
it's bad for the battery to keep the adapter plugged in all the time,
 but if
it's going to run down so quickly just sitting there what choice is
 there?

Have you tried Apple's Battery Recondition utility? They recommend
using it every month, while e-batts.com, which is where I got my new
battery from, recommends it every 2 weeks for maximum life.

BTW this battery was bought new (I suppose it was actually new-new
 quite a
few years ago) last August: please don't tell me I've got to shell
 out for
another one quite yet! But what *should* I do? If anything?

If you do, I highly recommend e- batts.com
http://www.eBatts.com/product.asp?part=B-5892/
HManufacturer=25descrip=PowerBook_5300CS and getting the 3.5 Amp
hour battery. While not exactly a bargain- basement deal, they're
pretty much in line with other retailers prices for brand- new
batteries and the 3.5 Amp hour rating is the highest I've seen and
costs about the same as what I see other places selling their 2.2 or
1.8 Amp hour batteries for. They also sell the lower capacity battery
http://www.eBatts.com/modelselect.asp?Model=998355 for competitive
price and their CS is excellent if you have any questions. The
difference in the higher capacity one is amazing when you're used to
such short charge spans. In fact, the time I get from my new battery is
often longer than my husband gets on his new iBook, albeit I'm only
running 7.5.3 with 8 MB of RAM whereas he's running Jaguar with 256 MB
RAM and burning CDs every now and then.

BTW, I'm not affiliated with e-batts.com other than a satisfied
customer.

Good luck,

Cathy

I thought I'd post this here just in case anyone might be interested... a
good home and all. Anyway, I've got a 66MHZ TiBook with 1GIG RAM 40MG HD. It
has a DVD-R/CD-R. I also have an external firewire DVDRW/CDRW, same model as
 Apple uses in their towers.

I got a pretty good deal on it, and these things go for around $2000 on
Ebay. Mine has a few scratches and slight flaw on the screen... just some
crud, but I can't seem to get it off... so I'm not expecting quite that
 much.

I don't have an asking price yet, but if you are interested email me off
list... at [EMAIL PROTECTED] and we can discuss further.

 Cheers,
 M

Re: PB 540C software

2003-01-06 Thread diane
Thanks all for your comments.

I did an over the network 8..0 install (no format yet) and it works
fine, even seems a bit snappier.

I think I have found a SCSI cable to hook it up to my old 1.2G
external drive, so I'll do a complete format and reinstall that way.

If I get stuck again I know where to find you. ;)

Re: PB 540c modem gone bad??

This suggestion got me on the right track. I went to my backup of the
original system, as it came to me, and copied the PowerPort control panel,
extension and toolbox and restarted and AOL now works great.

Thanks for the help!

Mark

 TIA,

 Mark
