Re: How much could I ask for a PB3400c?
Hi everybody, I'm planning on selling my old Powerbook since I don't really use it anymore (just for some light browsing and a few old games), but I'm wondering how much could I get for it? I thought I'd ask you guys. The PB is NOT in mint condition, so maybe it'll be for parts. A short description follows: less than 100 USD in that condition. But I'll buy the screen assembly off you for 30 USD plus shipping if you break it up. Re: 3400C sudden screen zap
I have a 3400c/180 powerbook that was working perfectly until POOF - while typing, the screen just disintegrated and went blank. I've tried pressing the reset button and resetting the PRAM. Nothing. It restarts - there's the dong sound, then a whirring noise inside but just blank screen. Any ideas on what's gone bust? Thank you, Nancy I think your backlight may have failed just like mine! Re: Duo hacking questions
I never did find them. Thanks for the tip, I will poke around when I get the chance. Last time I tried it, I randomly hit various pads hoping to get lucky. thanks, Mad Dog Mot has some PDFs (well, they did a few years ago before the semiconductor group started to tank) online with the pinouts of the 603e. You can use that to find the PLL pins and figure out the resistor matrix if you haven't done it already. Excuse me if I'm telling you something you already know. The one I'm thinking of is entitled: PowerPC 603e RISC Microprocessor Family: PID6-603e Hardware Specifications I know where the CFG_PLL pins are, but not the resisitor pads that they trace to. :( Was it you who was going to try to upgrade the Chips Logic video controller to a T65225? Or was that JT? The T65220 is also on the 5x0 and 280c, right? That would be a pretty serious soldering job. If you can do that, you might as well go right for the holy grail - a faster 603e! Yup. Already did the controller swap. It works fine, and the next step is to attempt to piggy back some more VRAM onto the exisiting 512K. It wasnt difficult. Unfortunately, trying to do the CPU swap is _just_ too difficult just using a fine tip iron. I have looked for pro shops to do the job, but I havnt had any luck. Man, there are a lot of similarities between this thing and the 5300. Now that you mention it, I might be able to use a 5300 board to find the VRAM address pins for 513-1024K on the video controller. Re: PB 1400/G3 - Problem #1
I recently got hold of a 1400/133 with a Sonnet Crescendo 333 mhz G3 card in it, running OS 8.5 ... although the G3 card seems to be working fine, I can't seem to put the Sonnet Upgrade extension in the system folder - whenever I do, it causes the powerbook to freeze during start-up just before the icon parade, i.e. right when the Sonnet extension is trying to install. There have been reports of incompatibilities with Sonnet cards and 8.[56] ... upgrade to 9.1. Yes, well I heard about that. Actually, someone (on another list) insisted that this incompatibility applies only to 8.6, not 8.5 ... but let's just say I'm bringing my question here because I haven't been satisfied with the answers I've gotten elsewhere ... As it happens I'm such a low end mac'er that I don't even own any 9.x installers. But I do own 8.1. Should I try a clean install of 8.1, and if that works, break down and invest in 9.1? PS I have already tried downloading installing the latest version of the Sonnet extension. No luck there with 8.5. Bruce -- PowerBooks is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Powerbook 550c parts
I just obtained a 550c from a friend; if anyone has any interest in the part I will not need: - a Japanese layout keyboard, but each key also has the corresponding (I guess) English letter character. It has almost the same arrangement as an English keyboard. - a NuPower card with 167Mhz power PC, - 32MB memory module, and, - a 750MB hard drive, with KanjiTalk7.5.5, the Japanese OS, but the previous owner says it is completely compatible with English 7.6 and 8.0 Let me know, Craig W. With the computer on can you see anything on the screen, you may need a bright light to see. If the normal display is there then your backlight or it's inverter have failed. If the screen isn't showing anything then the screen itself is likely the problem. Also after you start up can you press the power button, get a beep then hit enter and have it shut down? If this is the case then it definitely sounds like a display issue. If it doesn't then it's some other problem, possibly memory. -- Clark Martin Redwood City, CA, USA Macintosh / Internet Consulting I'm a designated driver on the Information Super Highway -- PowerBooks is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: 3400C sudden screen zap
My 3400 has periodically done the same thing. Usually, pulling the battery and resetting the PRAM solves it. I don't know whether you pulled the battery or not, but that is the only way to get mine to reset. It could be the backlight, though, or the power inverter. Re: PB 1400/G3 - Problem #1
I have a 1400 with a Sonnet 400. I have the same problems with mine, but mine will make it past the loading, and will crash under slight usage. I was told that it may be a faulty L2 Cache. I emailed Sonnet and they agreed that it sounds like a faulty L2 Cache, but I am getting a little fuss about getting it replaced. I do not have the receipt nor do I know where the upgrade was purchased. It was given as a gift by my Grandfather and he can't remember where he shopped last week. I know I probably told him where to buy it, but I can't remember myself. I have purchased too many Mac products from too many vendors, there is no telling where this thing came from. jonathan m metts --- every man dies, not every man really lives. What I've read about this is that without the Sonnet extension the card still functions but you don't get the L2 cache, which of course is a problem. I also read that you are supposed to install the extension first, then install the Crescendo card. If this has something to do with it it's kind of a problem since I only have the G3 cpu for this 'book, not the original 133 mhz cpu.
