Browsers are always a matter of personal taste. I have the identical 
1400 and always used iCab PPC except for internet banking and a Google 
graphic search, since iCab calls up the pictures from the cache each 
time rather than holding the page as IE does.

It has a much lower ram footprint, a blazingly fast downloader, and a 
very sophisticated graphic filter (I changed the little filter icon 
with ResEdit so now all I see is an indigo aqua button). A few weeks of 
surfing and filtering and you never have to see a banner again, and if 
you do, just zap it.

iCab X is still my default browser on my iBook.

Entourage always worked fine for me, so I can't give you any advice on 
mail programs.

I'm running IE5.1 on my 1400 and so far no problems. I'm hooked to DSL and
the IE is stable and working well. Haven't tried NS.

I've never had any problems with either of my 1400s, one of which is identical
to yours, while using NS 4.79. I haven't tried NS 6 in the 1400, but it works
fine in my G3 upgraded PCI Macs.

IE 5 crashes occasionally in those same PCI Macs and so I haven't tried it in
the 1400s.
