Part of the reason the uQLx has not been so seamless is that it supports a variety of Unix systems on a variety of CPU's. To make it seamless, a version would have to be compiled for a variety of Unix flavors, including a variety of Linux flavors (and the different install packages). The first time I tried uQLx, I had it running under IRIX on a Mips R5000 chip (not very common). I think the best that can be hoped for is for the QL-on-a-stick for Linux would support only the x386 platform and not the other chip sets that Linux supports. I can assist with the testing as I can get a hold of a number of Linux systems (probably all Red Hat), but I do have access to a VMware system that might have other Linux images. I am looking at uQLx on linux... Just because it can be so small that any box that can boot from the stick can be that. However, I'm also looking at it from the POV that architecture matters a little and weighing up Intel vs. ARM performance. It'll be a slow project due to zero finances, but if I can contribute anything back, I will, happily. Re: [Ql-Users] QL On A Stick
Given the nature of installing programs on Windows to run them, I can imagine creating a QL-on-a-stick for Linux would be fairly easy. The device would just need to be mounted (automount might do this with a USB Drive) and then apps would be directly from the USB drive. The USB drive can be formated for Windows (MS-DOS) and be mountable, so the whole thing could be created from a Windows box and then tested with Linux. With DosBox, QPC1 could be made to run. Re: [Ql-Users] QL on a stick
Run directly, with two small exceptions - the QLay2 emulator needs to have timing set for the host computer. It just means running one simple SuperBASIC program which tells you how much you have to change the default speed value to get QLay2 to run at the right speed. The version of QemuLator supplied is a shareware version. This is limited ot running at the speed of a standard QL with up to 384K of RAM. Registering it with its author (cost of $40) gets you a registration code you enter to unlock many (and I mean many) more features. Unfortunately, as the emulator stores the registration code in the computer's registry, this number needs to be entered on every PC it's plugged into (and I hope users will be considerate and unregister it to clear the entry from anyone else's PC's registry once you've finished using it on that PC). Apart from that no setup. Do bear in mind that I supply it on CD, so that you choose your own USB pen drive rather than be restricted by any I choose to supply. Dilwyn has kindly provided QL Today with a review copy of a QL on a stick. This is just the CD which you have to copy to your own USB memory stick. Would anyone be interested in doing a review for QL Today? Ideally we would like to publish in issue 2, which has a deadline of 15th November, Best wishes, Geoff ___ QL-Users Mailing List http://www.q-v-d.demon.co.uk/smsqe.htm
