'XC' denotes a chip that isn't fully qualified (similar to a beta

Does this mean not the RC in front of the 33 as in the example above. I
am confused as to the MC, XC, and RC prefix now.

Is my poor Quadra 840AV dead?

2002-12-28 Thread SimPanda
I have a Quadra 840AV that I found one day on my way home from work. I
brought it home, hooked it up to my monitor and keyboard, and found it
worked just fine. I decided to do a few upgrades on it by adding memory
and filling the vram slots. Since then I can not get it to start up
again. When I try to start it, I get no chime, just a blank gray screen
with the cursor in the upper left hand corner.
Here's a list of what I've tried to remedy the problem with no results:
I removed all of the upgrades I added except for one simm that I know is
good. No go.
I tried starting up from a system floppy. No go. Just the blank gray
screen with the cursor that won't move.
I tried starting up from an original Quadra 840AV system CD. See above.
I replaced the PRAM battery with a brand new one. No good even after I
have left it without a battery overnight.
I tried zapping the PRAM.
I have checked all of my cables numerous times, and all seem to be
seated solidly.
I have no external SCSI items connected to the machine.

Right now my biggest fear is that I may have damaged the motherboard
with static, even though I was very careful.
But I must admit I had one hell of a time getting everything aligned
properly each time I put the motherboard back. Is this something other
Quadra 840AV owners have experienced? Is there anything I can do to fix
it?

Nancy

7.1.1 Slowness Revealed! See the light!

2002-12-28 Thread Dan Palka
Well have my eyes been opened today. After installing system 7.1.1 (7.1 Pro)
I booted up to find a Quadra that theoretically should be much much faster
than the same with 7.5.5 installed.

I was curious to see if Speedometer 4.0 would find any differences of the
7.1.1 install. I thought to myself it shouldnt, and probably wouldnt, but
just maybe 7.1.1 would be a bit faster.

What the heck?

System 7.1.1 proved to be not just slower, but significantly slower in several
key areas, the biggest being disk access. Speedometer reported that disk
access records were 143% in favor of 7.5.5. How could this be true?
Similarly low scores were apparent in video, and math operations.

And I didn't belive it. I ran the same tests a half dozne times. Same
results, even restarted once to make sure.

And even more surprising, the 7.5.5 install has a ton of extensions and other
crap that didnt originally come with the OS. And it was STILL faster!?!?!?

How could light and fluffy 7.1.1 be slower than huge megalomith 7.5.5?

Well I for one, am certainly NOT downgrading to 7.1. I now belive 7.5.5 is
the prime OS for Quadras.

if I replaced the LC040 in my 610 with a full 040 should I find a heat sink
for it? it will be running all of the time and I would prefer not to

Any heat sink will work provided that it covers the chip completely. Your
only limitation is to whether or not the heat sink will fit with all of the
other components inside the case. In a 610, the CPU chip is very close to
the power supply and that is a determining factor on the size of the heat
sink. Make sure to use a thermal grease for good heat transfer from the
chip to the heat sink.

Re: CPU Chip Speed

2002-12-28 Thread J Sand

Also by swapping this chip into my 610 from a 577, did I increase the CPU
speed from 20 to 33 or is there something on the MB I need to change
also to take advantage of the faster chip?

In order to make a part run faster, you have to modify the board. Simply
plugging in a CPU that can run at 33 MHz doesn't make it do so

What kind of MB modification do I have to do, or should I just put the old
20 chip back in and save the 33 for the 577?

John
