Ahh, there it was.

The info about Q800 and the DOS card hasn't been updated though. The 6100
card _will_ work in a Q800, I tried it.

This page may be of interest for those wanting to try the 610 DOS
card in Quadras other than the original 610:

Has some juicy stuff. Including; "How to upgrade the 486 to a 586 by
Cyrix or IBM"..

Have fun.

Re: Chat Software

2003-01-20 Thread Ronald Bos
I do not know if we're going too far off-topic now, but we'll hear soon
enough one of the nannies complaining.

Considering compilers you have basically two choices. The most important
two are: MPW (Apple's tools, free) and Metrowerks Codewarrior (not
free.)

About porting gaim to MacOS 7.5: this is absolutely not trivial, because
it is based on gtk and glib. So porting gaim requires porting glib and
gtk too or writing our own glue code. Furthermore, it's written in C
which I personally do not like.

I think going C++ is a better idea because development is much more
structured (or can be :-) ) and there is a framework (like gtk) to help
us here: MacApp (Apple's free application framework). I already have
MacApp r12 example applications compiling under MPW. MacApp r12 dates
from the System 7 era so it seems to fit well. And it has very good
documentation, all available in the Apple archives.
Also, for example kopete is the KDE equivalent of gaim; it is a
multi-protocol (plugin based) chat client written in C++. So the basic
design can be taken from kopete.

Furthermore, I am willing to develop for this quad-chat program (in
fact, I have written some 50% of a msn client in Realbasic but abondoned
the project because my RB copy is illegal). But I am not willing to lead
development because I do not have much time the coming year.

So, is there anybody there to lead development? I will join the club.

Greetings to all,

Ronald

But remember, a company that folds or what have you probably still
sells off it's assets to satisfy it's creditors. Even old software
that is not being published anymore can be considered an asset so
it's likely that someone still owns it.

Re: Quadra 610 PDS DOS Card in other '040s?

2003-01-20 Thread edjones
Hi

I once ran a PDS dos card in my Q650, and it worked just fine.

The one problem was the cables. I have to use string to support the cable
from inside the machine, and feed it through an empty nubus slot.

Can't find copy of site where I got info how to do it again though.

I did remember though that best perfomerance was to add a simm on the card
and not to use the motherboards memory. I ran Ami Pro on Win 3.1 quite
happily. I also upgraded the heatsink (on the 486) to something better.

AFAIK, there is no "legal" abandoned software. There is an "abandonware"
movement that's trying to get stuff more than 5 years old (I think it is)
or "no longer supported" put out into "public domain." Once in a while, a
publisher *will* just say "Here, this version is free." (Wordperfect 3.5e
for Mac, or the Zork 1,2,and 3 games, come to mind.) Other than that, it's
technically also piracy...

General Warning / Nanny Rant - List Mom please note

2003-01-20 Thread vincenzo
Salutations to all,

It appears some members of the Qlist are unhappy with the way the Qlist
is being run from the point of view of the Nannies.

Why don't we step in sooner when things go OT?

Why don't we let the thread run it's course when it's OT

It appears I especially have not been heard on this list for six months
and am quite slack in my duties as a Nanny. Just so most of you know,
there are usually two Nannies per list. We volunteered to help Dan, our
list Mom when he asked for it. This was to ensure the lists ran smoothly
while he was either away or otherwise occupied. I personally tried to
work in the background so as not to embarrass those people on list. We do
not make the rules merely enforce them along the guidelines set for us.

Suggestion - if you don't like the way the current Nannies are handling
things on the list then try the following

1) Contact the list Mom and complain and / or

2) Contact the list Mom and offer your services as a Nanny

But until such time as you do "and" I get notified I am no longer a Nanny
BUTT OUT of what we have to do and let us run things as we have been
charged. Oh sorry, one of the complainers has already been booted out as
a Nanny.

Comments such as
>If I see one more post about why thus-and-so won't work on
>an iMac running 9.2.2 I'm gonna break some heads.
and
>didn't you say this guy had his warning already?

won't be tolerated - your posting priviledges are suspended Chris.

Referring to a Nanny as
> Sorry, Mein Feurer
even off list is not the most intelligent thing to do.

So, I will no longer work in the background.

Any comments please send off list to <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Thankyou all for your time

Vincenzo - Co list Nanny

As near as I can tell, PCSetup 2.0 is a case of the original company being
bought out, plus having a license from Apple. It's clearly being released
for free by the company, not just being distributed by people without any
connections.

In the case of a company's complete disappearance, I'm not sure who would
initiate legal action, or what party would be the beneficiary.

Copyright law is long and twisted :)
