[RBW] 8-Speed Jtek Bar End Shifter

2009-12-05 Thread Alex
Hi all:

Do you know where i can find an 8-Speed Jtek Bar End Shifter? It
appears Jtek stopped making them. I ask because i want to put a
Shimano Alfine internally geared 8-speed hub on my Rambouillet.

The Shimano ones appear machined differently and so do not have this
problem. But I'd grease anyway.

Yes. Twice. Until the problem is fixed it's Shimanos for me. (Yes,
the cable heads were greased.)

[RBW] Re: My Bombadil frame is at RBW!!!

2009-12-05 Thread Ryan
Get the Chris King. Yes, they're expensive. They also look really
good, are wonderfully smooth, and seem to be set it and forget it. The
Bombadil deserves it.I have these on both rivendells and last spring I
took the 1" King I was hoarding and had it installed on my X0-1. ...if
you have nice parts, may as well use 'em up. I had mine
installed...I'm not mechanical...my partner is...but I think it takes
care and the proper tools to have these installed

Honestly, I've had a few Tange headsets,2 Falcons which were pretty
good...and the roller-ball one Riv used to instal as a standard...that
one I wasn't too impressed with...it didn't seem to be easy to take
and hold an adjustment

If you like the dura-ace that would be a nice option too

Regards, post pictures and enjoy the new bike

2009-12-05 Thread ANDREW LETTON
I seem to remember hearing that derailleur cable ends come in two flavors:
Shimano compatible and Campy compatible...one of which is slightly larger
diameter than the other. Sorry, but I'm not sure which is larger. Maybe the
smaller one would not get stuck next time.
Can anyone confirm or deny this?
cheers,

Just a dab of grease next time. Probably seized.  Perhaps you could have

After a long internal debate, I went with the darkest green I could
find in Keven's color catalogs. Almost black, with the cream accents.
I can't wait to see how it turned out...

[RBW] FS Carradice Super C saddlebag

2009-12-05 Thread Forrest
I'm selling my lightly used Carradice Super C saddlebag. Nicely made,
23-liter capacity, Carradice quality. I've used it for commuting and
also on Ragbrai (ride across Iowa) last year when I went self-
supported on the light side. Some photos of it on my AHH here on
Flickr:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/10076...@n03/3553391898/

Here's how online vendor VeloFred in NYC lists it (for $138), with
nice photos and description:
http://www.velofred.com/product_info.php?products_id=66

My $90 price includes shipping in CONUSA. I prefer PayPal but will
discuss payment options. Inquiries off-list, please.

Why am I selling it? Because for my birthday I'm getting a new
Sackville SaddleSack medium bag.

Re: [RBW] Re: Dromarti shoes

2009-12-05 Thread James Valiensi
Hullo,
I have a pair of the Dromarti shoes. They are indeed made by Marresi, even the
box they come in is a Marresi box.
The shoes are the cycling equivalent of dress shoes. They do not look like
sport shoes by any means. You must wear Rapha or Tweed to look OK with these
shoes.
Beware, they run narrow. I wear SIdi's or Carnac's in 43, but to fit these
shoes I needed 44's, just to get the width.
Cheers!

[RBW] New Bombadil group on flickr

2009-12-05 Thread newenglandbike
Hi All,

I just wanted to bring to yall's attention a new flickr group
dedicated to the Bombadil. So far I am its only member, but
hopefully it will grow fast.I know there is already a terrific
group dedicated to RBW, but I figured the Bombadil is a really unique
and special bike, even among Rivendells, and that it might warrant
having its own flickr group.

There are already quite a few Bombadil owners who have shared
images of their rig on flickr, and they've all been invited to join
(or at least, I hope they have- if you're on there and you haven't,
you are hereby invited to join).

If there are any more owners lurking here, who have not yet snapped a
photo, or uploaded images of their Bombadil to flickr, please do :)
I'm hoping it will be a great way to showcase the versatility and
configurability of this great bike.

The group URL is here:

http://www.flickr.com/groups/bombadil/

Thank you,

Matt

I notice that Dromarti also sells lugged steel framesets, both strada and pista

I've also been wondering about this Qouc Pham shoe:

http://www.quocpham.com/products/fs0904.html

Cheaper at 90 GBP (VAT included, I don't know?), and not as good
looking to my eye as the Dromarti, but they might do well for toe clip
users.

[RBW] Re: AHH as a road bike

2009-12-05 Thread charlie
I see where you are coming from. Making a clear distinction between a
touring frame and an all rounder designed for long reach brakes and
bigger tires could be difficult. However I'm not so sure that a MUP is
the best place to notice a clear difference between narrow tires or
wider tires. In my area bike paths are generally flat, smooth, narrow,
crowded in the summer and inconvenient to get to but then I live in a
rural setting and riding on the open road is what I must do if I want
to ride at all.
Were it me, I would build up a lightweight ( under 20 pounds) single
speed for the MUP and gear it maximally for whatever terrain that
happened to be. If you don't ever plan to tour, racks and all, maybe
sell the Atlantis but that is such a useful bike I would keep it. I
think you would be crazy to trade your Hilsen for a Ram , gee
whiz ,the Hilsen is such a better bike overall. My advice, get some
Jack Browns or something in the 32mm wide lightweight neighborhood and
pump them up for your weight and don't give it another thought. In the
meantime, get your Atlantis all racked out with bags and camping gear
and plan a tour out in the country or several overnighters on the
weekend. Lastly you may want to look into having a custom built frame
with all the bells and whistles for your style of riding..a
skinnier tire bike that can still take fenders and loaded with braze
ons for racks etc. More of a Brevet bike, oh wait, that describes the
Hilsen.. h!

[RBW] Re: My Bombadil frame is at RBW!!!

2009-12-05 Thread newenglandbike
Sweet! What colors did you go with for the paint?

As for a headset, I have a Tange Levin on mine, and it works great-
I've done some bumpy riding with it in the heavily rooted woods around
here, in addition to a regular 40-mile round trip commute on
marginally decent roads, and it remains as smooth as ever. Yes, it's
only 20 bucks, but don't let the price fool you- it's a really good
headset.

Can't wait to see your new Bombadil built-up.

I can hardly wait to see how the paint scheme turned out.

I'll be picking it up on Monday afternoon, but the new Cane Creek headset
that Mark had suggested hasn't arrived yet, and it won't for another week or
two. My options are to wait, choose a DuraAce headset (same as I have on the

Any suggestions on the headset?

I'll be posting photos when I pick it up and build it!

[RBW] Nitto Big Bag rack attachments

2009-12-05 Thread Rene Sterental
A while back there was a discussion regarding the purpose of some of the
tabs/features on the Nitto Big Bag rack, and no one was sure what they were
for.

Check out this review from EcoVelo, that explains what they are for...
http://www.ecovelo.info/2009/12/04/stuff-we-like-rivendellnitto-big-back-rack/

This seems to be a very versatile rack, although I was told that it was
heavier than the Tubus racks. I went with the Tubus Cosmos for my Homer, but
if/when I put racks on my Bombadil, this might be a serious option.

More info coming later today or tomorrow, but in answer to a few of
the questions so far . . .

Top tube center-to-center is a bit more than 22" or nearly 57 cm.
Standover with the Marathon Cross 1.75" tires, at mid-point of top
tube, is a little under 33.75" or 85.6 cm.
The seat tube center to top is 23.5" or 59 cm
Chain stays are 17.5" long, or 44.5 cm

It should also be noted that relatively large amount of beeswax to

The owner of Free Range Cycles (great shop incidentally, Rivendell,

After seeing them in person, the price / performance combination is

Thank you for pointing that out.Nonetheless, it is common practice
to use linseed oil to thin the beeswax used in waxing and
waterproofing cotton. It is also used frequently with beeswax for
making a nice wood finish. This is because the small amounts (~1
tbsp per pint, or 1/2lb of wax required to do thin the wax) do not
pose significant threat of combustion. In fact, people (artists)
use linseed oil to thin paints which are then applied to cotton canvas
all the time.Folks have also been using it for years to protect
their steel frames, before Frame-Saver came into existence.Linseed
oil can be your friend! :D

Thanks -- I was kidding about the sale. I'll have to see how business is in
Jan; things ought to get busy and I may have the money. And $170 is not bad
at all, when you see the prices for Lakes and Sidis.

Worse than that. Linseed oil in rags (such as the rags you use to
clean up, or your cloth bag if you put in it an enclosed container)
spontaneously combusts. This is not a joke-- it really does.

Shipping is quite cheap from the UK. You can email them for a current
price shipped to your location.

Hi!

What's the standover with the current 1.75" tires?

I'll be posting a more detailed listing in a day or so after I arrive at an
asking price, but I'm going to be selling my Rivendell 59cm All- Rounder. Pics
on Flickr at the link at the end of this post.

The frame is a work of art and in wonderful shape (built by Joe Starck and
painted by Joe Bell, I believe -- will confirm). Has 26" wheels and an
impressively long head tube! Has 1.75" tires on it now but could take up to 2"
tires. Great for trails, dirt, gravel. But good on pavement, too. It's been my
commuter, and I took it on RAGBRAI this year as a loaded tourer, and it
excelled at that, too.

Re: [RBW] Re: Berthoud Saddle Review

2009-12-05 Thread Bruce
Like most things Berthoud, at $250 (more if you like cork finish) it is not
cheap. I have had execellent success the past 2 years on Selle Anatomicas. I
got 2 from RBW when they were about $159. I see them now at $136 online
(Outside Outfitters) and close to that elsewhere. As per Grant's original write
up, they quickly go to full adjustment, but then they stay there a long time. I
have 2 slotted styles and one without a slot (which I actually prefer). Don't
know if Berthoud does this, but Selle will re-skin a worn out saddle for $75.

Time will tell how well Berthouds stand up to use.

Brooks of course is still a reasonable choice at $95 (Nashbar, mabe less
elsewhere for a B17) but I am not a lover of the break in period.

Another one to say "thanks" for the review. Looked at them when they
first showed up. Unfortunately, am probably too heavy (230) for the
saddle. As well as wanting something a little wider. Oh well.

They do look beautiful. Especially the "cork" version. Have held
that one in my hands. My non-professional opinion is of very high
quality.

Probably a lot more clever and better behaved than most breeds as
well. People get trapped in categories. Too bad.

See that is the beauty of us being casual riders. We have the time on
our hands to know and know when to use a classic Clint Eastwood
quote. Those serious riders just don't know what they are missing.
