Re: [RBW] So your friend calls and says he wants to buy a bike
Regarding Tims bike shop story (and not to derail this too much) but doesn't the customer, in general, have some level Of responsibility for making informed purchases (oh, and $10K purchases at that)? In this instance he was already advised to wait and talk to Tim's shop. I guess some peoples' stupidity always amazes me. And there are some really effective yet unscrupulous people waiting for them. Re: [RBW] So your friend calls and says he wants to buy a bike
Well done, DP. :) I suggest putting that response in the "Best Posts Ever" list. For your friend who is Tri-curious: have him buy a reliable, "heavier than necessary" bike (Atlantis, Sam with drops and shifter/brakes or even a Roadeo) so that he can train on it. It's "weight training" or "train heavy, race light", or whatever. In preparation for race days, he can rent a super specific Tri bike from the LBS for a week or so (to give time to get used to the handling). Then the Atlantis gets ridden often, is ready for more adventures after Tri season is over, and will last him a lifetime. -Aaron Young The Dalles, OR On Friday, May 1, 2015, Amit Singh wrote: > He has a budget of $3,000 and wants to buy a "tri-bike" and wants your > advice on what to get. > > What do you tell him? > > -- > You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups > "RBW Owners Bunch" group. > To unsubscribe from this group and stop receiving emails from it, send an > email to rbw-owners-bunch+unsubscr...@googlegroups.com > > . > To post to this group, send email to rbw-owners-bunch@googlegroups.com > . > Visit this group at http://groups.google.com/group/rbw-owners-bunch. > For more options, visit https://groups.google.com/d/optout. > -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] So your friend calls and says he wants to buy a bike
The eccentric answer: tell them to buy a Jones diamond frame and run super motos tubeless on WTB Scraper rims. That bike will be fast as f&*k. People don't understand the black magic of Jeff Jones until they ride one of his bikes. They're astonishingly fast and capable, even for (reformed) tri-dorks. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Cheap steel? Sure, it comes at the expense of weight. Cheap carbon? No. Thank. You. It comes at the expense of me. Re: [RBW] So your friend calls and says he wants to buy a bike
I would have a long chat with him. The first question we should always ask in these cases is, "What kind of riding do you want to do?" Is this bike to be exclusively for triathlons and triathlon training? Does he have any other bikes? How competitive is he in triathlons? Is he interested in any other kind of riding-- the kind we on this list like, exploring, doing sub24s, commuting, riding on dirt and gravel, randonees? If my friend wanted a dedicated triathlon bike, I'd sent him to a store where they sell dedicated triathlon bikes and wish him well in his competitions. If he would be satisfied with a bike that was a bit slower than a dedicated bike, but could do other things too, then we could talk. Re: [RBW] So your friend calls and says he wants to buy a bike
Makes me think of a scene last night at the shop I work in. A 75-year old customer (friend of the owners, apparently) decides he wants to ride the entire RAGBRAI this year (7 day, ~450 mile supported social tour). He goes into a bike shop in Florida (where he winters) and manages to leave with a $10,000 Specialized Venge S-works. A super-light, agressive, aerodynamic race bike. He has the bike disassembled and shipped to our shop for re-assembly, and we find: it has scars on the bars, and was obviously crashed. The carbon wheels are out of true, the front somewhat seriously so. We call the customer and he admits that he crashed twice already, because he's not used to clipless pedals, because he's not done much cycling. So, this bike shop in Florida *sold a 75-year old man with no serious bike experience a $10,000 race bike*. The whole shop was so angered by this, but we can't do anything besides assemble this wonderbike as well as we can (which involved removing the tubular tires from the rims to true them--the spoke nippes are inaccessible). The shop owners counseled him to wait until he returned so they could help him with the purchase, but he decided to do it this way. I don't know the whole picture, but what little I know upset me. Even if this customer wanted to drop a bunch on a new carbon bike, I doubt our shop would have sold him this one unless he specifically demanded it. But the guys in Florida apparently love the soft, expensive fleece from snowbirds. Regarding your friend, I'd determine whether a tri bike would best serve him, considering his ability and desired cycling activities.
