Re: [Samba] Can't Samba working on RedHat 7.2
Couple of thing off the top of my head... Does your samba server have a static address? One thing you might want to look a is the interfaces tag - make sure it is either unset or set to the correct address (the static address the server itself). Also look at allowed hosts for the obvious (ensure that the local dhcp range is allowed in). It may pay to turn off password encryption till you get it up and running. Just a few starters if you haven't already tried them. Michael. [Samba] Can't Samba working on RedHat 7.2
Dear anyone who can help, For more than a week now I have been trying to get Samba share with Windows 2000 clients over a DHCP network. Samba and SWAT are installed and running on my RedHat 7.2 Linux machine. I have been using several resources to reference when configuring the smb.conf but nothing seems to be working. I can see the Linux box in "my network places" but when I click it I get the infamous "network path was not found" error. Do I need a domain controller? Is it a DHCP thing or am I just not getting the smb.conf configured properly? JimmyC

[Samba] Transfer of funds US$9Million
Dear Sir, I Mr. Yasanna Bangura one of the foreign liaison officers of the Sierra-Leone Diamond and Mining Corporation do crave your indulgence in a business proposal, though strange, which I pray you would view seriously.First and foremost I am an accountant and a foreign liaison officer with the Sierra-leone Diamond and mining Corporation and also a member of its foreign contract tender committee. This said amount Nine million dollars ( US$9M) emanated from an over invoiced (inflated contract value) contract which was awarded to a foreign firm for the supply of equipment and turn around maintenance(TAM)in the mining corporation. This contract was awarded and executed with real value paid, but the approve sum of variation (Inflated Contract Value) which is currently placed in a Trust company for safe keeping is what I and my colleagues in the (DMC) now want to transfer for further investment ventures. After due consultative sessions with members of the board of Committee, I was mandated to seek and arrange with a foreign national who can assist us in the transfer of this funds. Your assistance is needed for two main reasons, 1) As public office holders, (The Sierra-leone Code of Conduct Bureau) put a ban on public office holders from operating foreign bank accounts 2)That we need a foreign national to assist us in areas of investment preferably Real estate and Telecommunications. Members of my committee and I have unanimously agreed to compensate you with 20% of the total sum of the money.(US$9m) if you are willing to to render us your assistance regarding the transfer. The remaining 80% shall be ours. While promising you a quick and trouble free transfer of this funds,we want you to note that this is a very sensitive transaction which should not be disclosed to any other party than both of us. Its also important that you acknowledge the receipt of this letter, should you be/not interested in this business proposal, to enable us scout for another interested partner.as you would know, this will be the beginning of a long lasting business relationship between both of us. [Samba] LDAP + PAM
This is probably a really stupid question, but i was wondering if I were to use ldap with samba 2.2.3a, do I really need to use pam? I was kind of hoping to use ldap like i did with smbpasswd. To add a user, I first add the user to the /etc/passwd file and then add the user to the ldap directory. I know that pam woould probably be easier, but I really dont want to mess around with pam quite yet. If it means anything I am using a freebsd machine. RE: [Samba] samba 2.2.3a loses WINS registration
Title: RE: [Samba] samba 2.2.3a loses WINS registration Just a quick note about this: I was having this problem for a month or two, and a few weeks ago, I got in touch with Jeremy through this mailing list and he was able to track down the problem. He made a change to nmbd_mynames.c, I replaced the one in 2.2.3a with it, and it fixed the problem. So, if you would rather use 2.2.3a with this fix, rather than use the latest CVS, you can replace the nmb_mynames.c in the 2.2.3a source with the one attached to this message, and recompile. In the Samba source, nmbd_mynames.c is in /source/nmbd. I suppose the Samba CVS would be OK though, since, from what I've read on the list, the 2.2.4 release is VERY close. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Friday, April 26, 2002 12:34 PM To: Andrew Morgan Cc: Gerald Carter; [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [Samba] samba 2.2.3a loses WINS registration On Fri, Apr 26, 2002 at 11:07:49AM -0700, Andrew Morgan wrote: > > > On Thu, 25 Apr 2002, Gerald Carter wrote: > > > On Thu, 25 Apr 2002, Andrew Morgan wrote: > > > > > > > > Since upgrading to Samba 2.2.3a on several of our servers, we are having > > > trouble with nmbd not maintaining the WINS registration. [Samba] Samba PDC and Exchange Server 5.5
I have a Samba 2.2.3a running on Redhat 7.2 Setup as a PDC on a network of about 50 or so Workstations all the workstations are running either NTworkstation 4.0 Windows 2000 pro or windows xp pro. I have exchange 5.5 running on a win2k server everything works fine but I can not run the exchange administrator from any other workstation other than the exchange server when the exchange administrator tries to connect to the exchange server I get "DS_E_COMMUNICATIONS_PROBLEM Error" I also cannot install another server in the exchange site because it gets the same error when it connects to the exchange server. Has anybody else had this problem if so did you fix it ? RE: [Samba] bug (?)
Hi Everyone, The ability to access the /usr/bin subdirectory is a function of samba looking for a 'home directory' in the user store (/etc/passwd in this case). It FINDS it because the system user 'bin' is defined as: bin:*:2:2::/usr/bin:/sbin/sh You can prevent this behavior by adding the following line to your 'homes' section of the smb.conf file: valid users = %S This will ensure that the user of the home directory is in fact the appropriate unix user (for in this instance 'bin')... BTW, this is true of ANY 'home directory' listed in the /etc/passwd file... Hope this helps, Don -Original Message- From: Panagiotis J. Yes, I would want to make sure that all files exist on a tape after they have have been in existance for a period of time. HSM software should be doing disk space management in the background, not necessarily shelving and purging files on demand. HSM directories are by nature usually read only archives, so the HSM software should be able to migrate but not purge in the background so that if it needs free space in a hurry, it does not have to do a migrate and purge to get it. >> >> I am sure that there is interest. Because of the caching issue, >> unless you have enough files so that they all do not fit on the >> disk, you may not notice a performance problem. > > :) We'll force them to tape, don't worry! Yes you can force a purge, but if the HSM software is smart, it will do anything it can to avoid going to the robot to retreive a file, so even if it claims to have replaced a file with a stub, the file may still be resident on the disk. So when a file is opened, the HSM software just swaps the stub with the actual file that is still on the disk becasue the migration process did not really delete the file. So unless you cause the HSM software to overwrite the files that had been "purged", you will not see the performance impact. Virtual memory works the same way. When my process is over it's quota, some pages get moved from my address space and put on the free or modified lists to be used by other processes. If my process accesses those pages, if the page is still on the free list or the modified list, I get the same page back instead of having to go to the disk and wait for it. > By the way, we're moving to ADICs AMASS because we've had problems > with DX2000 which have never been resolved (including loss of > hundreds of gigs of content, which isn't fun). An open HSM solution > would be a godsend. Unfortunately the number of users that need an HSM system is small, and with the size of hard drives shrinking fast, getting smaller. The cost of the robot hardware is the gating factor. Now using a gzip archive instead of a robot, may make it more economically feasable. -John [EMAIL PROTECTED] Personal Opinion Only -- To unsubscribe from this list go to the following URL and read the instructions: http://lists.samba.org/mailman/listinfo/samba
[Samba] 2.2.4-pre Makefile install issue.
Just checked out CVS 2.2.4-pre this morning and noticed that some new directories under $prefix are being used: var/run and var/run/samba ? the Makefile does not create these on "make install" and prohibits smbd from starting with an entry regarding the smbd.pid. nmbd will start but cannot create the nmbd.pid file. Simply adding $(PIDDIR) to the installdirs dependency doesn't do the trick because the problem is a bit larger than that. The install-sh script uses -d to indicate the object is a directory to be created and -m ### sets the chmod value. install-sh was not intended (the way it's written) to handle multiple dirs as it is being used by the installdirs: dependency in the Makefile. It reads: installdirs: $(SHELL) $(srcdir)/install-sh -d -m $(INSTALLPERMS) \ $(BASEDIR) $(SBINDIR) $(BINDIR) $(LIBDIR) $(VARDIR) $(CODEPAGEDIR) but should be: installdirs: $(SHELL) $(srcdir)/install-sh -d -m $(INSTALLPERMS) $(BASEDIR) $(SHELL) $(srcdir)/install-sh -d -m $(INSTALLPERMS) $(SBINDIR) $(SHELL) $(srcdir)/install-sh -d -m $(INSTALLPERMS) $(BINDIR) $(SHELL) $(srcdir)/install-sh -d -m $(INSTALLPERMS) $(LIBDIR) $(SHELL) $(srcdir)/install-sh -d -m $(INSTALLPERMS) $(VARDIR) $(SHELL) $(srcdir)/install-sh -d -m $(INSTALLPERMS) $(PIDDIR) $(SHELL) $(srcdir)/install-sh -d -m $(INSTALLPERMS) $(CODEPAGEDIR) I tested it and solves the above mentioned problem. The script can handle n-depth dirnames (such as PIDDIR) the way it's written today. hi all, some days ago there was a discussion, where the pwdMustChange attribute was set to 0 to force the account to change the password at the next logon. unfortunatly samba did not set back the pwdMustChange, so the next time the user logs on, he needs again to change the password. so we modified $SAMBASOURCE/examples/LDAP/ldapsync.pl to work with openldap 2.0.x (with simplebind) and also to set back the pwdMustChange attribute to 2147483647 (why that number)? so if needed it can be included in the global section of smb.conf with unix password sync = Yes passwd program = /usr/local/sbin/ldapsync.pl -o %u passwd chat = *New*password* %n\n *Retype*new*password* %n\n *modifying* it uses right now all the system commands (ldapsearch and so on), so no extra perl modules are needed for now. the userpassword ist crypted (cause it was this way), maybe we change it to use ssha passwords anytime. and for creating the lmpasswords and ntpasswords it uses mkntpwd (it needs no extra libraries as smbencrypt, are there other differences?) the files can get downloaded at: http://www.tronicplanet.de/~stegbth/samba/ldapsync.pl http://www.tronicplanet.de/~stegbth/samba/mkntpwd.tar.gz so far thomas -- -- # Thomas Stegbauer # Tronicplanet Datendienst GmbH # http://www.keyserver.de:11371/pks/lookup?op=get&search=0xFF837A1A -- To unsubscribe from this list go to the following URL and read the instructions: http://lists.samba.org/mailman/listinfo/samba

TRANSLATION: I need help with information to resolve a problem I have with Samba. The problem is the following, what happens is that as soon as an archive is transferred from Windows to Unix, the archive arrives altered. That is to say, when displayed, the information comes with a character at the end of the line, distorting the received information, and I don't know what it consists of. The resource fork is handled by the Mac file sharing application, which may put it a seperate file/directory (like CAP, netatalk, SFM) or in a different file stream (like MacServerIP can optionally do - v useful, in that it keeps everything tidy, big headache in that *nobody* handles NTFS streams properly, not MS, not OTG, not nobody I've found). Keeping them in seperate files/directories mean that you can set your shelving policy not to touch these (tiny) files, which takes away some mac fileserving headaches. > The question that none of the Windows based HSM vendors would give me an > answer on was: Is there any way to make sure that a copy of all files > shelved and unshelved exists on the storage robot, and how do I restore > things when the real disk fails. I would think that question should be > easy to answer. Now I'm confused. It may be because that before coming to this thread my HSM terminology was different to yours. I use 'migrated' for when a file is written to tape (or optical, whatever). 'fetched' for getting it back and writing it to the stub file, 'purged' for removing the file from the extended volume and replacing it with a stub file. You purge only migrated files (for obvious reasons), and a file open on the stub will trigger a fetch. To answer your questions with regard to OTG DX2000: How do you know that a copy of all files shelved exists on the robot? Assuming you mean 'shelved' to be 'migrated & purged' and 'unshelved' to mean 'migrated but not purged', then you don't know, you trust. You can run tape reports to list what's on each tape, but bugs notwithstanding, if a file's been migrated, then it should be on the tapes. DX can backup its internal database (stub file -> tape location) to file which you can stick somewhere safe. In event of distaster, you can rebuild the stubs by just restoring from this file. You can read about this on OTG's website: http://www.otg.com/KnowledgeBase/default.htm try 'dxdrivedump.exe' - that knowledge base will give you a lot of info on how DX does stuff. > > I'll be trying samba (and netatalk) on a HSM'd volume on Monday, so > > I should be able to report back, if there's interest. > > I am sure that there is interest. Because of the caching issue, unless > you have enough files so that they all do not fit on the disk, you may not > notice a performance problem. :) We'll force them to tape, don't worry! The disk is 1.44TB, so yes, we'll have a job filling it, but you can set policies to ensure that migrating starts when your disk reaches 0.01% full, or to migrate as soon as a file appears on the volume, and to force a purge (stubify) of all files. By the way, we're moving to ADICs AMASS because we've had problems with DX2000 which have never been resolved (including loss of hundreds of gigs of content, which isn't fun). An open HSM solution would be a godsend. -- Illtud Daniel [EMAIL PROTECTED] Uwch Ddadansoddwr Systemau Senior Systems Analyst Llyfrgell Genedlaethol Cymru National Library of Wales Yn siarad drosof fy hun, nid LlGC - Speaking personally, not for NLW -- To unsubscribe from this list go to the following URL and read the instructions: http://lists.samba.org/mailman/listinfo/samba
[Samba] "permission denied" problem between Samba 2.2.3a and Mentor Graphics database
Admins, We have a clustered fileserver running SunOS 5.6 and Samba 2.2.3a. The fileserver hosts a large number of CAD designs for the engineering teams we have working here. Two weeks ago, we upgraded Samba from 2.0.4 to 2.2.3a, and now one of our engineers is reporting a problem with accessing one of his Mentor Graphics databases. When he attempts to open the design database from his Win NT machine, he gets the following error: // Error: $open_file returned error status at line 3545 of file E:/MentorGraphics/MGC_HOME/pkgs/layout/userware/En_na/lay_area.ample within function $prepare_re_area (from: Uims/Ample/Ample_eval 1D) // Error: Unable to open file j:/cdi/cpu/sbcp3/ccp3/pcb/RE/Pcb/ccp3.pcb (from: Uims/Ample/Ample_stream 01) // Error: Permission denied (from: Unix 000D) Note the very last line of the error message. Before Samba was upgraded to 2.2.3a, the user was able to access all of his files without a problem. I've done some investigating, and changed the permissions on the file in question from rwxrw-r-- to rwxrwxr-x, hoping that this would allow the Mentor Graphics program to correctly access the file. It failed, and when I logged back onto the Sun box, I saw that the permissions on the file had reverted back to rwxrw-r--. Mentor does not officially support Samba, and I'm thinking that this has something to do with the problem. Here is what they have to say about it: TechNote Id:20996 Topic: OS/Networking Product:Design Capture Versions: n/a through n/a Creation date: 03/22/2001 Modified date: 01/03/2002 Short Desc: Unable to save file on a remote filesystem Problem Text: You are unable to edit certain files (for example, the Net Properties file) when the file is on a remote file system. When you attempt to save the file, the tool gives a permissions error, even though the permissions are wide open. What's wrong? Solution Text: VB software releases (through 2000.0a) rely on Windows file locking, and are therefore not supported on filesystems that do not support Windows file locking. The only supported filesystems are as follows: * Win95-Fat16 * Win98-Fat 16 or Fat32 * Windows NT-Fat 16 or NTFS * Windows 2000-Fat16, Fat 32, or NTFS * Novell 5.X NWFS (Netware File System), NSS (Novell Storage Service) No other flavors or implementations of remote file servers are supported. The list of unsupported remote file servers would include, but is not limited to: * UNIX (including LINUX) native file systems * NFS (on UNIX or PC) * Samba * Network Appliance / Auspex file servers * Novell Netware prior to Netware 5.0 Two points here. Mentor's tech note states that their products are "not supported on filesystems that do not support Windows file locking", and they include Samba in their list. Is that right? I could've sworn that Samba DID fully support and cooperate with Windows file locking. Now, although Mentor does not "officially" support Samba, it was working FINE on Samba 2.0.4, and the only change we've made is to upgrade to 2.2.3a. No changes have been made to smb.conf at all. My theory is that there is a file locking option in Samba that isn't set correctly. Does anyone have any idea what could be the problem? [Samba] bug (?)
Hi, I would like to mention the existence of an not browseable undefined sharename in samba. I tested it with samba 2.2.1a, 2.2.3a and linux, sunos, freebsd. If you run a samba server and try to connect at sharename "bin", which is not defined in the smb.conf you actually achieve it. (the user that tries to connect must be is smbpasswd) In linux after the connection you see the /bin dir and in freebsd you go to / and you can browse the whole tree. (access is not with write permissions). Is this a feature of samba, because it looks to me as a bug or something? A small proof follows, not wanted to make this mail so big. With SAMBA 2.x.x you can use the Policy Editor from NT 4.0 There are all kinds of ADM files out there to control about 95% of what you can control in AD Like NT 4.0 Server save the .pol (That's a policy file) and NTconfig.pol and place that in a netlogin share on you SAMBA server. Re: [Samba] samba ports blocked by isp
Win2k and WinXP will automatically try to connect to port 445 in addition to port 139. Earlier versions of Windows like NT, ME, 9x aren't able to use port 445 at all. To use port 445 with smbd, you need to put an entry in /etc/inetd.conf that looks liks this: microsoft-ds stream tcp nowait root /usr/local/samba/sbin/smbd smbd Make sure the path is right, and *don't* use the -D flag! Also, if you don't have microsoft-ds in your /etc/services, you'll need to add it as tcp/445. If you don't have inetd, you probably have some replacement like xinetd or rlinetd, and you need to figure those out yourself. :-) -Nathan On Fri, Apr 26, 2002 at 07:48:09AM -0500, Barry Smoke wrote: > is there something special I need to make this work on both ends > or should this work by default? > > On Fri, 2002-04-26 at 07:02, Nathan Lutchansky wrote: > > On Wed, Apr 24, 2002 at 04:55:56PM -0500, Gerald Carter wrote: > > > On Wed, 24 Apr 2002, Barry Smoke wrote: > > > > > > > Is it possible to map a drive to a samba share over the internet, > > > > through an isp that blocks the samba ports... Does this mean add them to the admins group? I have already done that, if it means something different can you please give more detailed explanation. I think that is an unusual configuration though - most users have exclusive write access to their home dirs (only root can also write there) This unusual config may be because Im looking at things from a windoze network poing of view. Take a small office situation for example: an office manager and some workers. The workers need only access to thier directories, but the office manage may need to save files for the workers to correct or retype or what ever. What would be the prefered way of setting groups and permissions for a situation loke this? you could make joe and admin admin users using the admin users directive > Can some one direct me to a detailed document on how Linux handles file > permissions or the best way to do samba fiel permissions. samba file perms ARE linux file permissionns (unless you are using ACLs) have a look at http://www.onlamp.com/pub/a/bsd/2000/09/06/FreeBSD_Basics.html > BTW why does directory . and .. have different permissions? because . refers to "this" directory and .. refers to the one above "this" one. and they may have different permissions > > Users: admin, joe, user1, user2 > Groups:admins, joe > Smbusers:user01, user02 > Group membership:admins-admin, joe smbusers-user01, user02 > File permissions of data directory: > drwxrwxrwxrootroot. > drwxr xr x rootroot.. > drwxr xr x admin admins admin > drwxr xr x joe admins joe > drwxr xr x user1 smbusersuser1 > drwxr xr x user2 smbusersuser2 something is wrong with these - too many spaces between r and x for group and other. [Samba] Samba 2.2.3a, ClearCase Views and Win 2K
I am trying to use Samba 2.2.3a on a Solaris 8 system for dynamic view storage from W2K machines. I have hit a wall though in that the view storage area on the Samba server refuses to have the right permission even if I open it all the way to 777, set my UNIX group to have administrative privileges or even if I log in as an administrative user in the domain. Have a look at the output below. "CASCM1" is the name of my Samba server and "rail-chq" is the name of the PDC for the RAILINC domain. The CASCM1 machine which is the Samba server and belongs to the RAILINC domain, does not seem to be passing the information to the PDC for password and user authentication. Can anyone help me out here? C:\>creds -u sdjls19 cascm1 Windows NT user info (on "cascm1"): Domain: CASCM1 SID: S-1-5-21-3970177079-3037793699-731120738-124086 Type: User ID: 0x ClearCase user info: Name: sdjls19 UID: 0x100b50 GID: 0x100b97 Home: C:\ *** Warning: ClearCase and Windows NT user lookups yielded different results. C:\>creds -u sdjls19 Windows NT user info (on local system): Domain: RAILINC SID: S-1-5-21-1643391981-149702606-1648912389-2896 Type: User ID: 0x100b50 ClearCase user info: Name: sdjls19 UID: 0x100b50 GID: 0x100b97 Home: C:\ C:\>creds -u sdjls19 rail-chq Windows NT user info (on "rail-chq"): Domain: RAILINC SID: S-1-5-21-1643391981-149702606-1648912389-2896 Type: User ID: 0x100b50 ClearCase user info: Name: sdjls19 UID: 0x100b50 GID: 0x100b97 Home: C:\ So, my W2K machine and the PDC can get the correct SID and UID information. However, the Samba machine, "cascm1" cannot. It reports the SID of the machine "cascm1" that was created when I added the "cascm1" machine to the Windows Domain. In other words, the SID noted here is the SID in the "MACHINE.SID" file on the "cascm1" Samba machine. This seems to not be the correct behaviour for Samba in the mode that I have it in, yet, I can set, get and use UNIX user ids for the Windows IDs that I have without a problem on the same share but not using the ClearCase commands. If I try to use any ClearCase command that creates view or VOB directory structures, the root directory of the VOB or view is created, the Samba machine just craps out when trying to create the additional files or structures underneath it. Re: [Samba] smbspool to NT printer
I don't know a thing about NT but: Have you tried, from your linux box: smbclient //server/printer Then, do the user/password thing Then: print Printfile Of course, it would help if Printfile were formated for your printer. If that works, you should be able to print without much trouble. The print command to use, if this all works, is: cat Printfile | smbclient //server/printer (PaswordStuff) -c " print -" Or something close to it. If THIS works, then learning to set up a print filter should be your next project. If you have a postscript printer, you might not even need to reformat your documents to print them. Just print your document to a file, then use the above command to send it to your printer. I am not even sure if you would need lprng or whatever if this works and meets your needs.
