[SLUG] Domain delegation (slightly OT)
Hi Slugs, well it's been so long since i've been in the business of setup/delegating domains that i've forgotton! I have the domain name. Where do I go to get a domain delegated? Re: [SLUG] Domain delegation (slightly OT)
Depends what king of domain it is. com/net/org's are simple, com.au's through inww, net.au's through connect, org.au's are a pain. brett On Wed, 9 Jan 2002 22:15, you wrote: > Hi Slugs, > well it's been so long since i've been in the business of > setup/delegating domains that i've forgotton! > I have the domain name. > Where do I go to get a domain delegated? > Ben -- SLUG - Sydney Linux User Group Mailing List - http://slug.org.au/ More Info: http://lists.slug.org.au/listinfo/slug

Delegation involves getting someone with a name server on the Internet to become the authority for the domain and actually hosting it. Any ISP will do this for you. Once the domain is hosted, the ISP (or whomever) can setup A records in the domain's zone file to point to any IP addresses of your chosing. The cost can vary from free (beer) if you find a friend with a name server on the net, to maybe $100 to $150/yr for an ISP. The process is completed when the organisation hosting your domain sees that it is delegated at the .org.au end of things, i.e. your domain ultimately has to have referant in the 2LD .ORG.AU. I suppose you could also look into setting up your own domain name servers (you should provide two separate servers on separate nets) and become the authority for the domain. The company you registered it with. How you do it depends on your domain registrar. Most will have a form you can fill out that allows you to change the name servers. Simply set up and test your DNS then change the name server entries to point to the new server. Re: [SLUG] Domain delegation (slightly OT)
I'll add a note to this one. Robert Elz ( at least when I was dealings with .org.au ) had two tracks. Fast Track. Absolutely everything in your request is letter perfect, correct, and valid. A few weeks turnaround. Slow Track. If an request has problems, it goes on the problem pile, to be dealt with a few times a year ( randomly between 1 - 6 months ). So it is a very good idea to make sure requests are very correct when dealing with .org.au. Of course, it might have changed since then... Brett, how are NR's dealings with him of late? Wasn't larry going to offer to run .org.au for free at some point? RE: [SLUG] Domain delegation (slightly OT)
Not that this really gives much more info but it does summarize the state of play. http://icannwatch.org/article.php?sid=508&mode=thread&order=0 auDA want to open tender for the org.au registry. Elz is standing his ground. Lot's of politics etc etc. Having said that we don't register org.au's anymore, it's just in the too hard basket, but delegations have seemed to imporoved of late. That's still the case for delegations, I've done a couple in the last few months. Basically you need to ensure that everything is exactly correct. Bothe DNS servers have the same SOA etc etc. Then simply fill in the form on the AUNIC webpage and the request is usually turned around in a week or so. There's a status page there somewhere as well that tells you up to what date requests have been completed. Should be the same deal with registrations since the whois part is handled by aunic and simply the delegation is done with Elz, last one I did got knocked back in under a week, basicaly the bussiness already had an org.au they where just told to ditch the current one first. -- John http://www.inodes.org/ -- SLUG - Sydney Linux User Group Mailing List - http://slug.org.au/ More Info: http://lists.slug.org.au/listinfo/slug

I will just give a plug for Robert Elz. I have had two org.au's done through him. Yes I did take the time to make sure all information was supplied. For one domain the turn around time was few days and for the last one, November last year, I had an email from him saying it had been accepted and processed the next morning. Thats service from an unpaid volunteer who does a great job. It's a far cry from my own .com.au which was done though company in a city down south and took several weeks. They started sending me a few renewal notices `suggesting' to payup for my domain last October when it's not due till April this year too. That pisses me off. So Elz gets my vote, if had one :-) Mike -- Michael Lake University of Technology, Sydney Email: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Ph: 02 9514 1724 Fx: 02 9514 1628 Linux enthusiast, active caver and interested in anything technical. -- SLUG - Sydney Linux User Group Mailing List - http://slug.org.au/ More Info: http://lists.slug.org.au/listinfo/slug
