Hi all,
Anyone interested in doing some contest for some bucks, I'm talking
about a $50. to $200. entry fee with all of it paid back.

They do it in a ton of amateur sports, from golf , bowling, bass fishing,
ect.

Any reason why not in T/D flying ?

Anyone interested in the Midwest anyway ?

I would throw some bigger bucks into a hat if anyone would want to come
compete at my field.
Or we could do some team thing at any field.

I don't need no trophies, I need groceries and servo money! :-)

Just thought I would throw the idea out there.

[RCSE] Re: Tragi 705 flap linkage (solution)

2005-08-20 Thread D Hauch
hey guys,
found a fix that worked for me.
i took the shoulder of the brass horn, it was hitting on the clevis.
removed the jam nut to lower the horn a little and that gave me some
advantage.
i'll try some loctite to secure the horn for now.

those silicone hinges have alot of resistance to them ones near 70 degrees,
has anyone done anything to relieve this ?

[RCSE] Tragi 705 flap linkage ?

2005-08-19 Thread D Hauch
Hi,
Does anyone have some info they could share with me on the right combo
to get 90% flap throw, i'm close but can't find that magic combination.

These silicone hinges have alot of resistant once you get to 70%.

Like output shaft forward or aft in the pocket, any bends in rod,
servo arm length, ect...
I'm using JR368 servo.

thanks,

I agree with Rick, good points.

do both, then let him decide.
or go from one to the other in different conditions, mix it up,
might keep him more interested.

mostly teach him the pure joy in shagging chutes. :-)

Re: [RCSE] soaring issues - I now understand

2005-08-14 Thread D Hauch
Thats great Dan glad to hear you caught the soaring bug.

I've been flying just about everyday since April.
Lately, I've been getting back from flying, throw everything on
charge, grab some food, maybe a nap.
Then I'm bored, so I head back out for more.

I'm very lucky i can do this, since I build all night.
My motto is, ''got to git while the gittins' good!" because, believe me
it will change. :-)

[RCSE] soaring issues

2005-08-13 Thread D Hauch
I was thinking today while setting up my winch in the rain
that i must have some serious issues.

But I just went one day in a row without flying and couldn't
think of going two without. :-)

So I went twice today to make up for the missed day of soaring.

[RCSE] launch foreplay

2005-08-13 Thread D Hauch
hi all,
Did something new today.
I've been dialing my X-21 to do cross wind launches, and finally
have it dialed in and no more snapping.

I had a good 15 mph head wind, so I loaded up the mono on the f3b winch
to see how I could weave it from side to side.
I loaded it up and launched it, as soon as it took off I got off the winch
pedal and never touched it again.
I started weaving from side to side like a kite and it was working
beautifully.

I remembered someone telling me about circle towing, never heard of it
before or seen it, and wasn't going to believe it till I seen it.

So I decided to give it a try. When I was coming across in front
of me while still doing kiting, I put in full left rudder and it did
a perfect circle, I couldn't believe!
I did another, and another, opened it up a little to climb out, then dive it
back down, I was amazed and laughing out loud, hope nobody
seen me out there. :-)
If I could go left, I'll try right, then did figure eights, then saw how low
to the ground I could go then push it way up high.
Couldn't beleive I was doing this, and wondering why I've never
tried it before.
It sounded like I was DS'ing from the sound the mono cutting thru the air.

that flight last 10 minutes and my neck was killing me, so I wound it
up and stomped on the pedal to get a huge ping out of it.
Had a HUGE grin on my face the whole time, what a blast!
Couldn't beleive I was doing this, and wondering why I've never
tried it before.

Just had to tell someone. :-)

I was wondering the same thing, if there's a long wait on these

OK guys, what's going on. While I normally just read the list and
occasionally post a for sale item I just have to comment on this strange
phenomenon. My flying buddy Jim Porter has posted a couple of Icons, one
RTF and the other NIB and nobody has snapped them up. We're talking about
an F3J version with top quality digital JR gear built by arguably the best
craftsman I have ever seen. No glued in servos here, everything on mounts.
It's balanced and test flown only and is perfect. Oh, and by the way, you
could have it next week, no wait! Did I mention a basically free Bag Lady
bag in the deal. Guess I'm sounding a little like Gordy here but come on,
somebody buy these planes! Rants over. Back to work.

Thanks,

Randy McCleave

[RCSE] need advice for a altimeter

2005-07-04 Thread D Hauch
hi guys,
I'm looking for a altimeter that is small in size that will log my
max height.

I'm using it for testing my max launch height only, and want to be
able to read it when I land after a speed run.

I don't have a lap top, and it doesn't have to give me the height
verbally.
Just want to pull the nose cone off and look after each launch
and get an (accurate) reading.

thanks,

[RCSE] ballast ? wing/fuse

2005-06-28 Thread D Hauch
hi all,
you guys where so good on my last question i have another
for you guys.

some planes take ballast in the fuse and others in the wing.

is there any penalties you pay in performance say for a wing
that is fully ballast, compared to a fuse full.
i'm talking 2lb. to 4lb. of ballast, so the ballast will be 12'' to 16''
on both sides of the wing half.

thanks,

  Hey

I lost the fuselage ballast tube
for my 2M Image a few years back.  Now I’m too busy (yes and lazy) to
build a new ballast tube for it.  The original ballast setup for this
thing was a thick cardboard tube with a dowel plug in one
  end.

Does anyone have a ballast tube

[RCSE] top or bottom driven ?

2005-06-21 Thread D Hauch
hi all,
I've been asked this a few times, and I give my opinion,
but i want to see what you guys have to say.

What gets better mechanical advantage, top or bottom
driven linkage, and how much does the drag of bottom driven
really effect things, if any ?

My vote goes towards bottom driven.
I can always get the throws I want, easy to set up and adjust,
and gives a solid control surface.

real small and made for a easy install.
I've been getting alot of customers sending this RX.

for his Db9 connector in the fuse, I just installed the first two
out in Fazers tonite, worked great!

I can send pics if you like, ping me back.

[RCSE] max wind speed for f3b contest ?

2005-06-14 Thread D Hauch
hi,
anyone know what this is ?

thought i would practice some speed runs in the wind.

had 42oz of ballast in the X-21, wind blowing 22-30 mph with good
thermal activity, launching on mono, UNBELIEVABLE launches!!!

Had my heart pumping good, until i go to land in my rotor riddled
field, brought the heart to a fast stop trying to land this thing. :-)
doesn't help having 30 mph winds cycling there way thru a bunch
of airplane hangers. :-)

I've looked all over for them, I know they make them, I just

Well after a great two days of spring flying here in the
Midwest, I thought I better ask the significant other what she
would like to do on Sunday, and she said ''would you like to go
and do some speed runs together''I said, I guess. Life is Good! :-)

Bob Burson and I hit our local sod farm for some great warm
weather flying.
Had a nice wind blowing in the morning so I loaded up the
f3b winch with some new mono and was having a blast launching
the X-21.

Jack Strothers came out for his first flights off the year and had
his Icon hooked up and out of sight in now time.

like finger nail file that would go back and forth.

Is there such a animal ?

Would a water jet cut something like this
?

I have a friend that runs one, and it will cut thru 6''
of steel.

  Dear ballasting
  buddies,
  I built for a Sharon
  Pro 3.7
……which everyone that has held or owned one knows has the
skinniest fuselage known to man….a tungsten ballast system that loaded under
the wing via a small opening into a carbon fiber tube. I got the machineable
tungsten round rod which is approximately 97% as heavy as pure tungsten and
tried to cut it into small sections on my Atlas 6” lathe…..not a chance in
hell that was gonna happen.  A
club member’s father worked at an aerospace lab doing prototype machining and
his father tackled the “machinable” tungsten and 5 hours later had it cut into
nice 2 oz. chunks…..can’t imagine how much it would have cost if I had to pay
the regular rate. All said and done the
  Sharon could ballast up an
additional 1.85 lbs. over minimum weight and if I had to pay the going price
the ballast system probably would have ran an additional $400 for materials
  and machining. My $.02

You say it's an alloy. Do you
know what the tungsten is alloyed with? There are some tungsten alloys that
have been specifically formulated to be easily machined, your bar may be some
of that. Get yourself a good hacksaw blade, chuck that sucker in a vise and
try it out. If the tools you have available won't cut it then find a machinist
with some cobalt bits. If you don't know somebody send me the bar and I can
cut it, but I'll probably have to keep the "scraps" :-) The post office is
  gonna love it.

I have some 3/4 inch heavy tunsten alloy stock I need to cut. Do I have tohave a machine shop cut it or is it possible to cut it at home withThanks, Walter
