Ok I will think of projects, can you guys provide me with an example
project so I can ground a bit the ideas?

Past projects are public available.
For last year projects you can look at
https://www.google-melange.com/gsoc/projects/list/google/gsoc2014.

Hi guys, thanks for the clarifications

Sorry for my ignorance, I am not sure how it worked :),
I was not expecting payment but I was not sure if I had to go somewhere or
not.

Now:

1.) Ok, That I knew!
2.) Ok, good to know
3.) Ok, expected this :)
4.) 6-10 hours per week, whooaa... thats a lot hmm. Is it possible to split
mentoring
between people to ease the load somehow? That is even more to what I am
dedicating to Spyder.

Ok I will think of projects, can you guys provide me with an example
project so I can ground
a bit the ideas?

Cheers!

Re: [spyder] Google Summer of Code and NumFOCUS

2015-02-19 Thread Raniere Silva
I am willing to help on GSoC, but of course I would need to know in advance
how much time and when this time should be allocated ;).

For GSoC, 2h/week * students should be enough.
Mentors are responsible to review students patches
and help answering questions or suggest someone that could answer it.

 Just keep in mind that:
1.) I am in The Netherlands for the next 3 years, (Maybe we should do a
sprint in France with Joseph :), Aix-en-Provence?)
2.) I am Colombian, so if I need to go somewhere outside of Europe then I
will most likely need a Visa.

GSoC is a remote non-paid position.

Cheers,
Raniere

2015-02-19 Thread Carlos Córdoba

Hi,

@Gonzalo: I'd like to act as a co-mentor, given that I know the codebase
much more than anyone else (except Pierre, of course :-). So please
propose projects you find interesting and challenging enough for a
student to work on, whom you'd guide until completion. I can propose my
projects too, but I'd like to know if you have some of your own.

You need to be aware that:

1. Students work for 3 months on this (during the summer, hence the name
:-).

2. They can be located anywhere in the globe.

3. They are paid for this work, you are not.

4. I've read from other mentors that this is a very challenging work.
I'd said you should reserve between 6 to 10 hours per week for this.

Cheers,
Carlos

[spyder] Google Summer of Code and NumFOCUS

2015-02-19 Thread Raniere Silva
Hi,

NumFOCUS has promotes and supports the ongoing research and development of
open-source computing tools including Spyder.

This year NumFOCUS want to try be a Google Summer of Code
umbrella mentoring organization,

Umbrella organizations are mentoring organizations accepted into the Google
Summer of Code program that have other open source organizations working
under them. Sometime organizations that work very closely or have very
similar goals or communities may get put together under an umbrella.
Google stills expects all organizations under the umbrella, whether accepted
into the program under their title or not, to adhere to all the rules and
regulations of the program.

From
https://www.google-melange.com/gsoc/document/show/gsoc_program/google/gsoc2015/help_page#umbrella_organization

To help promote and support Spyder.

We encourage Spyder to apply to Google Summer of Code under your own title
and will be very happy if you can also do with us.
If you are interested, please check https://github.com/swcarpentry/gsoc2015
and https://github.com/swcarpentry/gsoc2015/blob/master/CONTRIBUTING.md.

If you have any question, please email me directly.

Thanks in advance,
Raniere

Hi Raniere,

Thanks a lot for your offer and for thinking on Spyder about it! We have
not participated yet in GSoC but it seems like a pretty good experience :-)

I have a couple of ideas that would suit really well for GSoC, but I'd
like to know if other developers could be mentors along with me,
especially Steven, Gonzalo, Joseph or Sylvain. If they don't have time
or the willingness to do it, then I'm afraid I'd have to decline your
offer because that would be too big a commitment of time on top of my
maintainer role.

Cheers,
Carlos

Sorry to raise this in the last minute.
I will be more careful next year.

Don't worry about it! it's just fine. I just wrote this part to see what
our other devs think. Let's see what they answer :-)
