Hey Amos.

I was waiting for that!

We have a few requirements not yet satisfied in Squid 3.x, storeurl_rewrite
features are a big one, so we're having to hold off until we're able to conjure
something up.

Can't get them ported across can you? ;-)

WIth regard to 2.7, ZPH, are you aware of any bugs that may cause sibling_hit
to be ineffective. I saw on the Lusca project that their code had an issue
preventing the mark from ever being applied. I wonder if Squid suffers with a
similar fault.

That feature is already ported into 3.HEAD thanks to Eliezer. You can
make use of it by building that development package. As things stand
today it will be in 3.4 series. There is a bit of work and a lot of
testing required to get it into 3.3, but if anyone is interested in
helping out with that let me know. Eliezer has decided to concentrate on
some needed further improvements now rather than back-ports.

I'm not aware of any bugs in the ZPH patch. They (ZPH) wrote two very
different versions of the feature for 2.7 and 3.x, and we have extended
and fixed the 3.x version in quite a few ways since it was merged. A lot
of the bugs people have reported are either in code which was never
setting TOS at all, or where they confused the up/down directionality of
the packet flow. As for Lusca vs 2.7, yes being a fork of that version
it is likely that Lusca contains any bug known in 2.7.

This was altered in 3.2 to perform happy-eyeballs parallel lookups
anyway so most bugs in the lookup code of 3.1 will be closed as irrelevant.

Note that the current supported release is now 3.3.1.

Thanks,

The logic seems odd to me and now I understood the reason to what happens.

This is VERY likely to be the problem. Squid tests for IPv6 ability
automatically by opening a socket on a private IP address, if that works
the socket options are noted and used. There is no way for Squid to
identify in advance of opening upstream connections whether the NIC the
kernel chooses to use will be v6-enabled or not.
Notice that the method used to disable IPv6 was to simply not assign
IPv6 address to the NIC, nothing at the sockets layer was actually
disabled. So every NIC needs to be checked and disabled individually as
well, and any sub-system loading IPv6 functionality into the kernel also
needs disabling as well.

(Warning: soapbox)
The big question is, why disable in the first place? v6 is faster
and more efficient than v4 when you get it going properly. And one he*l
of a lot easier to administrate. If any of your upstreams supply native
connections it is well worth taking the option up. If not there is
always 6to4 or other tunnel types that can be built right to the proxy
box to get IPv6 at only a small initial latency on the SYN packet (ping
192.88.99.1 to see what 6to4 adds for you). Note that these are IPv6
connectivity initiated from the proxy to the Internet *only*, so
firewall alterations are minimal to get Squid v6-enabled.

Amos

The main problem with IPV6 is that most of the ISPs around the world
dosn't support\provide it yet.
While trying to use a 4to6 tunnel I have seen some weird stuff going on
when a gateway is used.
A proxy is another thing and speed is most likely the issue in the cases
which 4to6 tunnel is not being used.

Try to contact the dns servers maintainer using postmaster or any other
relevant address.

You can consult about it in ISOC mailing list.

BIND has very nice logging options about lazy and problematic dns
servers which can help you prevent these issues.

It's a very common problem in the dns world not related just to IPV6.

The big issues you have are:
 * using NTLM. This seriously caps the proxy performance and capacity. Each
new TCP connection (~30 per second from your graphs) requires at least two
full HTTP reqesut/reply round trips just to authenticate before the actual
HTTP response can begin to be identified and fetched.

 * using group to base access permissions. Like NTLM this caps the capacity of
 your Squid.

 * using a URL helper. Whether that is a big drag or not depends on what you
are using it for and whether Squid can do that faster by itself.

These are your big performance bottlenecks. Eliminating any of them will
speed up your proxy. BUT whether it is worth doing is up to you.

Yes it is packaged now as production-ready so far as we know. At least
as much and slightly more so than 3.2 series.

The announcement is delayed a few days to allow for
packaging/documentation problem detection. Like the text you spotted,
thanks, looks like that change was omitted in 3.2 series as well.

I believe we're already testing the package provided by Eliezer and have

Can't get them ported across can you? ;-)

That feature is already ported into 3.HEAD thanks to Eliezer. You can make
use of it by building that development package. As things stand today it will
be in 3.4 series. There is a bit of work and a lot of testing required to get
it into 3.3, but if anyone is interested in helping out with that let me
know. Eliezer has decided to concentrate on some needed further improvements
 now rather than back-ports.

WIth regard to 2.7, ZPH, are you aware of any bugs that may cause
sibling_hit to be ineffective. I saw on the Lusca project that their code
had an issue preventing the mark from ever being applied. I wonder if Squid
 suffers with a similar fault.

I'm not aware of any bugs in the ZPH patch. They (ZPH) wrote two very
different versions of the feature for 2.7 and 3.x, and we have extended and
fixed the 3.x version in quite a few ways since it was merged. A lot of the
bugs people have reported are either in code which was never setting TOS at
all, or where they confused the up/down directionality of the packet flow. As
for Lusca vs 2.7, yes being a fork of that version it is likely that Lusca
contains any bug known in 2.7.

[squid-users] Caching URLs with a ? in them?

I have a bunch of static content with appropriate Expires headers, but
the URL contains a ?serial=123456 where the serial number is dynamic.
Is squid smart enough to ignore the fact that the URL looks like a
dynamic request, and use the expire headers to see that it's indeed
static/cacheable content?

It *is* a dynamic request. Look see ... the URL is constantly changing.

Expires is relative to the URL. So if the URL changed its a *new* object
(MISS) with new Expiry details. Get the picture?

see http://wiki.squid-cache.org/ConfigExamples/DynamicContent for teh
configuration directives to change for cachign these responses. If you
have a new install of Squid-3.1 or later the default settings will cache
them.

However, once you have them cached, you will probably still see a lot of
MISS happening because the URL are changing. For best cache HIT rate you
need to look at why those serial exist at all in the URL. They are
breaking the cacheability for you and everyone else on the Internet. Do
you have control over the origin server generating those URLs? If you
could explain what the serial is for exactly perhapse we could point you
in the direction of fixing the object cacheability.

Unknown. But I doubt it. This is Squid using a PINNED connection to
relay traffic to an upstream server. That upstream server is rejecting
the clients delivered credentials after each object. There is no sign of
proxy authentication taking place, this re-challenge business is all
between client and upstream server.

You need to look at whether these connections are being pinned then
closed, and why that is happening. Squid-3.2 offers debug level 11,2
which will give you a trace of the HTTP headers to see if the close is a
normal operation from either end. Or whether they are keep-alive by
Squid and the upstream server is just constantly forcing re-auth (it
happens).

[squid-users] squid 3.3.1 - assertion failed with dstdom_regex with IP based URL

2013-02-12 Thread Amm

I had reported this bug earlier in Dec 2012 but probably went unnoticed in
squid-dev group

http://www.squid-cache.org/mail-archive/squid-dev/201212/0099.html

So just re-posting as it still exists in stable branch 3.3.1

Hello,

I get following when using squid 3.3.1.
2013/02/13 08:57:33 kid1| assertion failed: Checklist.cc:287: !needsAsync
!matchFinished

Squid restarts after this.

The culprit acl line seems to be this:
acl noaccess dstdom_regex -i /etc/squid/noaccess

This happens only when URL is IP based instead of domain based.
i.e. http://1.2.3.4

Squid acl reference has this note for dstdom_regex:

# For dstdomain and dstdom_regex a reverse lookup is tried if a IP
# based URL is used and no match is found. The name none is used
# if the reverse lookup fails

So I suppose 3.3.1 is trying to do reverse lookup and some kind of assertion
fails.

This bug does not exist in 3.2 as I did not notice it happening in 3.2

So please fix it.
