I don't like dia too much. Kivio is a pretty good program (The Kompany)
comes with most linux installs. The only thing I don't like about Kivio
is the inablity to make a diagram that spans multiple pages. ( you can
but you can't design with it spanning multiple "virtual"
representations, you have to start a new page for every page )

Might have been "dia". That is a standard part of most Redhat installs. I haven't made
it to 8.0 yet. My last Redhat install was 7.3

RE: [OT] IDE / ERD modeling (Was: Re: struts IDE)

2003-03-06 Thread Becky Norum
Thanks to everyone for their suggestions!

Mitchell, yes, I've heard many raves about ERWin, but never actually
used it myself.

James and Alex, I'd played around with ArgoUML for sequence diagrams,
etc. but hadn't used it to do ERDs.. it would be nice if ArgoUML had
more ERD shapes, but I can work with it.

Rick, I took a look at jEdit and bookmarked it for looking at more
thoroughly in my free time :P . The same for Poseidon, Robert. :D

I'll probably end up trying to get things working with ArgoUML and see
how the exported eps files look.

RE: [OT] IDE / ERD modeling (Was: Re: struts IDE)

2003-03-06 Thread Mitchell Morris
This misses your stated constraints in two big ways: it's for Windows, and
it's nothing remotely close to free but you may be able to get the sales
people to comp you one or reduce the price dramatically since you're an
acccredited university.

That said, I've never had the pleasure of working with a tool for database
modeling that's anywhere near as complete as Computer Associates ERwin (now
called "AllFusion Data Modeler", I think). It does logical/physical
modeling, user-defined domains, subject area diagramming, IDEF1X and Chen
notation, and lots of other useful database modeling stuff. I've been using
it rather strenuously for about two years now and I continue to find new
ways to (1) reduce my efforts and (2) improve my results using the tool. Oh
yeah, and it generates loverly diagrams with color-coding.

That isn't to say it's the greatest thing since "vi", because nothing is,
really. It has some, um, interesting interface quirks, strange ideas about
pathfinding for the relationship lines, and the occasional flaky behavior.
On the balance, though, I can't say good enough about it to people who have
the scratch to purchase it.

Poseidon UML is based on ArgoUML, but less buggy with no real nuances
and is free too.

If you don't care about free or not, I use Magic Draw 6.0. Solid as
can be with tons of features even reverse DB modeling.

To add to that, I worked on porting a Struts builder application to a
jEdit plugin a while back. The application had some issues I wasn't
comfortable with (unfortunately I don't remember what they were :)), so
I never quite finished it. However, for the adventurous, the plugin is
here:

It will do all you need and you choose the plugins you want. Want the
XML validation - just download the XMl plugin, etc. It's the most
customizable editor/IDE out there (at least that I've found).

RE: [OT] IDE / ERD modeling (Was: Re: struts IDE)

2003-03-06 Thread James Higginbotham
I am an Emacs/JDE user myself, and I am beginning to look into Eclipse
only because it seems to make me more efficient with some tasks.. I
always liked the paradigm that VAJ provided but hated the repository due
to its difficulty in CVS integration. Eclipse is a nice middle ground,
giving me good codebrowsing, incremental compiling (showing what broke
after my recent change), etc. I still prefer the power of the emacs
editor and some of the JDE features match most of what I need in my
daily chores. I do find that the debugging is faster in Eclipse (but you
can't debug into a source you don't have in your project and you can't
open just any file - grrr), and tools such as refactoring and better
code complete is nice. I have yet to try the struts UI tools, since they
are mostly managing the XML files themselves (but I can see how they
help, I've just opted to not try them yet). So, I plan on using both
until I determine where my best efficiencies land and which one stays
out of my way the most and allows me to be productive. The key here is
that I'm trying to use it on one of my afterhours projects so I don't
take my effectiveness during the workday down too much, and I might try
it at work once I get comfortable enough to rebuld my project config
inside the IDE.

As for ERD, I'm sure there are others out there but I've used ArgoUML in
the past - all Java, sortof a buggy UI with nuances to learn, but free
and exports to GIF and XMI.

I've stayed quiet on this since I've used IDEs rarely. I stick with

JDeveloper speeds up the process, once you are familiar with it. I
tried it for a couple of hours once, but found it kind of a pain to
use. Is spending time learning one's way around really worth it?

OTOH, there are times when a typo in my struts-config.xml or web.xml
waste an hour or two my time, and having some sort of validation would
be great.

And _really_ off-topic, what do you folks use for ERD modeling in *nix?
I haven't been able to get DIA or xfig to generate decent looking .eps
for papers, so I.. um.. do them in Windows. Any other (free - we are a
poor academic research center :D) modeling software out there people
use? Or tips on maximizing xfig/DIA?

WSAD 4 does, and probably WSAD 5.

I remember running WSAD 4 WAS test environment in debug mode. Place a
breakpoint in JSP and start the application. The application will stop at
the break point. Then you debug your JSPs just as any other application.

I agree. Some posters seem to not even have explored the struts site
very thoroughly, though, and would probably miss the point. But a link
to search the archives may filter out some of the repetitive questions.

Re: struts IDE

2003-03-06 Thread James Holmes
Most likely the plugin is installed fine, but it is
not recognizing your xml file as a Struts config file.
You need to make sure you have the right DOCTYPE in
your config file otherwise Struts Console won't work.
For more on this see the help page:

http://www.jamesholmes.com/struts/console/help.html

To verify that Struts Console plugin is properly
installed in JDeveloper go to the "Tools" menu and
select "Preferences". If you see "Struts Console" in
the tree on the left hand side then Struts Console is
installed properly.

Hope that helps,

[SERIOUS] The number of times that this topic has come up, does anyone have a
poll-taking web site that struts users can place their votes on for favorite IDEs or
OR Mapping tools or whatever? [NOT SERIOUS] Or perhaps C|NET could be talked into
providing this.

That is correct. The Struts Console plugins don't
provide a facility to create new config files in any
of the IDEs. Unfortunately, this is only available in
the standalone version.

Yeah, I know. However I have switched to Eclipse now and using both Easy

By the way I coudn't see option for creating new struts/validator/tiles
config file in Eclipse with Struts Console plugin installed. I can only edit
existing config file. Am I missing something?

Do either of these provide breakpointing ability in JSP's, and
traversing transparently into container code.

My current environment (which is WSAD 5.0 built on top of Eclipse)
doesn't do this, and I find it annoying.

The other annoyance I have is that when I run tomcat and hot code
replace a method -- if I "save" the file.. tomcat actually restarts
the entire web-app. Does JBuilder do any better?

You can use the Struts Console plugin in JDeveloper
and it has fully working support for Struts, Tiles and
Validator config files. This should solve your

I have used 9.0.3 for building few struts applications and I can say it
saved me a lot of time. They have integrated few wizards for working with
config files and support for taglibs (autocomplete etc.). However I have

struts-config). Also, there was no support for tiles and validator.

These days I saw Oracle has released maintainance version - 9.0.3.1, but I
haven't downloaded it yet.

I'd like to hear the people's opinion on JDev 9.0.3 as well, especially

I used JDev 9.0.1 and 9.0.2 on a quite big project with my custom struts
integration and it was just horrible. 9.0.1 was very very buggy. Although
9.0.2 fixed some problems, some conceptual ideas were still, well, strange,

integration, but the basic concepts are still the same (opening and closing
the connections within a JSP page, JSPs are more than just a view etc).

Open Explorer
Click View->Options->File Types->New Type
Enter a Description and "jsp" for the file extension
Click New... under "Actions"
Enter "open" for descripton for the Action and enter the path to Ultradev in
the "Application used to perform action" box
Click Ok
Select "open" and click Set Default

I'm using Win NT 4, so the menu might be different for you.

RE: Struts IDE

By combining the opentool external browser support
http://codecentral.borland.com/codecentral/ccweb.exe/listing?id=17071
and set your windows explorer's file extension .jsp with Dreamweaver
UltraDev, you can easily edit the page in dreamweaver from Jbuilder.

RE: Struts IDE

2001-12-20 Thread Juan Alvarado \(Struts List\)

I'm not exactly sure what you mean, but in Visual Age for Java 3.5 and above
(I use 4.0), once you add the Apache Tomcat Test Environment to your work
space, you will need to create a project called JSP Page Compile Generated
Code which will contain the source code for the generated servlets from your
JSPs.

I hope this helps.
