Re: [WISH] An idea for a future built-in translator.

I'm not aware of any such project. Machine translation, even between Western European languages is a difficult problem and may well be beyond the resources of any reasonable open source development project, which will have to re-invent a lot of the work done for proprietary programs. would also recognize if this text is written like a document or letter or just a plain conversation so that the text will turn out correct when translated. I know that it's a big project, but think a bit. If a person writes in their native language to you and you don't understand. If you want this text translated you have to spend time after time after time after.you know the drill..to find what that particular word or sentence means if you DO find it. What might be possible would be the facility to look up individual words in a dictionary, but maintaining those dictionaries would have to be a project in its own right. Dictionaries require a lot of work to compile, and you cannot use existing dictionaries in the process, because that would infringe on the dictionary compilers' copyrights. CEDICT has existed for some time, but only gives the translation, with no explanation on usage, and is missing many words. Google translate doesn't translate whole sentences correctly since many words can mean many things. Most words have multiple meanings! Google and Babelfish will have cost a lot to develop (they may be based on commercial, standalone, products). They do not translate word for word, but the fact that they are still produce very bad translations demonstrates how difficult the problem is for someone with lots of commercial resources, including the ability to licence existing dictionary data. -- David Woolley Emails are not formal business letters, whatever businesses may want. RFC1855 says there should be an address here, but, in a world of spam, that is no longer good advice, as archive address hiding may not work. ___ Support@pidgin.im mailing list Want to unsubscribe? Google talk vs Pidgin
I have Pidgin installed on a laptop, when I run away from the corporate network, I get connection to the server with no problem. However, on the company network, no connection. Google Talk on the other hand has no problem connecting in either location? Am I missing something here? I have tried various proxy settings but no avail. Internet Explorer also has a box checked that says detect proxy settings automatically. The same as Google Talk. I would like to use one IM tool since our company uses Sametime internally. Thanks in advance for any light you can shed on this. ___ Support@pidgin.im mailing list Want to unsubscribe? Use this link: http://pidgin.im/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/support
Problem with regular disconnects
I'm not certain- this may be covered by ticket #10744. http://developer.pidgin.im/ticket/10744 Basically, what happens is that connections die and reconnect. I am currently (and regularly) connected to five separate services- MSN, two AIM accounts, and two separate IRC servers. On a regular basis, (between thirty and ninety minutes) connections disconnect and then require reconnection. They do not disconnect concurrently; one MSN account may disconnect and reconnect while the other is working, and then the other will disconnect/reconnect forty (or whatever) minutes later. This occurs regardless of internet access; when I take my laptop to work, or to a coffee shop, identical behaviour occurs. This behaviour occurs regularly, regardless of service. I am running Pidgin 2.6.4 on Windows 7 Release Candidate, with the following plugins on: Buddy State Notification 2.6.4 History 2.6.4 I'dle Mak'er 2.6.4 IRC Helper 2.5.1 IRC More 2.5.1 Log Reader 2.6.4 Message Notification 2.6.4 Off-The-Record Messaging 3.2.0 Pidgin GTK+ Theme Control 2.6.4 Psychic Mode 2.6.4 Release Notification 2.6.4 Text Replacement 2.6.4 Windows Pidgin Options 2.6.4 I am also running Avast antivirus and the standard Windows firewall. Oddly, this behaviour only began fairly recently- specifically, December 25, 2009. There was, in fact, a hardware change at that time- I changed from a large (approximately USB-drive sized) Bluetooth dongle to a micro-USB Bluetooth dongle. However, in testing I have removed that dongle and rolled back driver updates pertaining to it and it does not change the current behaviour. An example (typical) debug log of this behaviour is as follows: (10:34:14) oscar: Scheduling destruction of FLAP connection of type 0x0002 (10:34:14) oscar: Destroying oscar connection of type 0x0002. No, that just makes the contacts bigger and shows buddy icons to the right of their name. Here is a screen shot of what I am talking about[0]. The first contact (as indicated by the black text) isn't expanded and only shows the name once (blocked out for privacy). The second contact (as indicated by the red text) is expanded and will show the name twice. To disable that for your users, go to each user, right click on them, and select collapse. If that isn't what your list looks like, then I'm not sure what's up. This has happened to us before, I just can't remember how we fixed it. The list of buddies has everyone's buddy name twice, exact duplicates one after the other. If anyone knows of a fix, that would be helpful. Just kind of annoying, it doesn't bother the function. Do you have the same buddies in several accounts? Which protocol do you see this happen with? -D ___ Support@pidgin.im mailing list Want to unsubscribe? Use this link: http://pidgin.im/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/support
