So when someone replies to the list, that person will never see the

person to e-mail support@pidgin.im without - at the very least, getting
an e-mali back telling them they need to subscribe otherwise they won't
 see replies?

Sounds like an excellent idea. Perhaps 'clicking' on the Support
MailTo: Link should generate an automatic 'Form Email' including the
Link to Subscribe/Un-Subscribe along with the 'warning' that the Email
is going to be Posted to a Public Forum. Probably better would be to
state the 'warning' in the same location as the Support List address. :-\

This would also solve the problem that's come up quite a few times
recently of OMG! I sent my user ID and password to a mailing list! or
 What?! This message was confidential!

Of course, You'll never be 100% successful in protecting folks from
themselves. God knows, Governments keep spending Billions trying and
failing. :-D

Second question - can we disable HTML - rather allowing people to post
HTML? There's no reason (IMHO) a 1 line message of I can't connect to
the XMITT server should contain 200 lines of HTML garbage, a JPG
embedded with the company image, etc

Your MUA is set to Open Email showing HTML? =-O

Still, this is also an excellent suggestion. If screenshots are truly
necessary then perhaps someone should 'approach' the individual directly
and solicit them. :-\ If for no other reason than to reduce the
bandwidth required to download HTML Email which counts against those
with pre-set limits. [think laptop/netbook dongles with 5GB/month maximums]

2 Annoyances

2009-01-04 Thread John Moore 3rd
I am enthralled with Pidgin but am annoyed by 2 things that seem to
happen far too often. One minor one major.

Pidgin 2.5.3
O/S: XP SP3

Minor Annoyance: Initial Start-Up

When starting Pidgin it takes too much time. The view from Task Manager
indicates that Pidgin goes through several 'Responding' 'Not
Responding' phases. :( Usually patience will prevail and ultimately
Pidgin boots. From My personal logs I noticed this behavior /after/
installing the Skype Plug-In. I can ameliorate this Start-Up hassle if
I remember to Open Skype _before_ Opening Pidgin.Because I use both
Google Talk with My Gmail Account with a Google Apps Domain I have
resigned Myself to the 'Certificate Acceptance' confusion. :-\

Major Annoyance: accounts.xml suffers a lobotomy several times a year. :(

I have not been able to track the source of this intensely aggravating
circumstance but every 2-3 months I Open Pidgin and am greeted with the
'Welcome to Pidgin' screen inviting Me to configure Accounts. Arrugh!!!
Everything was configured and running smoothly the night before when I
closed Pidgin normally. No Warning, just all the data in accounts.xml
has vanished. :-\ The most irritating aspect of this is that even when
all 8 Accounts have been re-enter manually the settings related to
combining Buddies using 'Expand' is lost too. Also lost are the
assigned aliases which is a large hassle when ICQ Contacts are suddenly
represented by their ICQ # and not their Name. The other thing that
must be reconfigured are the IRC Channels that were configured to
'Auto-Join'.

I know this can be 'solved' by remembering to manually maintain a Copy
of accounts.xml in another location on the computer; but invariably when
this error happens it isn't with a recent back-up available. Has anyone
ascertained what causes this data loss?

Other than the above 2 items I have Zero complaints with Pidgin. The
Application is extremely versatile, stable and customizable. The
Support ranks among the very best I have experienced with any
Application. Any suggestions to mitigate the 2 annoyances above will be
much appreciated.

because I can't find a program that connects to it and stays stable so I can
fix the problem. I even thought about creating a new MSN account, but c'mon
it's hard to believe there's no solution to this...

The 'solution' is to, within Psi, use the MSN Transport Agent. This
assumes that Your XMPP [Jabber] Account supports MSN transfer.

FWIW, I use chat.mail2web.com and its does support MSN via
Transfer/Transport Agent with good stability.

I can't see that this is a 'Bug' within Pidgin. Pidgin is functioning

different IM Applications handle connectivity to various IM Services.

SpellCheck in 2.5.3 [revisited]

2008-12-27 Thread John Moore 3rd
Following Etan's suggestion I have re-installed 2.5.3 making sure to
confirm that Spell Check is enabled. While English was pre-selected
grayed out' it was selected with a check mark in both places. [one in
Spell Check another next to English]. Post re-install I still do not
have the functionality of Spell Check in the IM Compose screen. :(

I have not yet reverted to 2.5.2 to see if it returns with a Downgrade
to the prior version. Running Pidgin on XP SP3. Since no Plug-Ins were
added or disabled between version 2.5.2 2.5.3 I am curious at to
whether any changes in code between the 2 versions may have introduced a
conflict?

Spell Check in 2.5.3

2008-12-26 Thread John Moore 3rd
I'm using Pidgin on M$ XP SP3.

When I installed 2.5.3 over 2.5.2 I have noticed that Pidgin no longer
underlines mis-spelled words nor offers spelling corrections. :(

Did I make a mistake during Install? Is there a simple way to 'fix'
this restore Spell Check? I _do_ have the option to do this checked
under Pidgin Preferences.

2.5.0 Issue with SSL Cert for talk.google.com

Why is it every time I Open/Boot Pidgin 2.5.0 I am asked to Accept the

prompted for this until I Upgraded to 2.5.0 from 2.4.3 earlier this

If the connection to talk.google.com is broken for some reason I am
again asked to Accept the Certificate when re-connection takes place. I
do have 3 separate Accounts running the talk.google.com Server. My
Gmail Account on GTalk and 2 XMPP Accounts using the same Server through
Google Apps. Still, it wasn't a problem until moving to 2.5.0.

Make sure that You have checked SSL, Force 'Old SSL' and allow plaintext
login. Also, Port should be 5223

AIM error message: could not connect to authentication server: Connection

I don't use AIM

Yahoo error message: could not establish a connection with the server:
 Connection refused

Do Not use SSL. Yahoo isn't set-up for this so it has has no way to
allow it. Make sure You haven't checked the box to Use Japan unless
You are located in Japan. :-D If You are located in Japan then get back
to Me and I'll provide the entries for the various boxes.

MSN error message: Connection error from Notification server: Unable to
 connect

See Yahoo above. Check 'HTTP Server' make sure the box indicates

gateway.messenger.hotmail.com Also check to see if the Port = 1863

The 'Server' should show: messenger.hotmail.com

NOTE: all of the above assumes You are connecting using Your Hotmail
address as Your MSN Passport ID.

Usually, for Proxy Settings I leave Pidgin set to Use Global Proxy
Settings on all Services and haven't experienced an issue.

All account settings on Advanced tab are at the default settings.

Are You behind a Proxy of some kind? Are the outbound settings in
Pidgin the same as they are in Your Trillian installation? Ports, etc.?

Turned off firewall; didn't make a difference.

I've never had a Firewall issue with Pidgin other than granting it
permission to access the Internet and allowing Pidgin to 'Act as a Server'.

At this point it became evident to Me that Kathryn is completely unaware
that simply clicking 'Reply' does not address the response to the
Support List but rather to the 'From:' field address. :(

I take the term 'Avatar' to mean what Pidgin refers to as the 'Buddy
Icon' displayed in the Buddy List of recipients. I haven't used the
Yahoo Messenger Client since converting to Pidgin from Psi.

In the Yahoo Messenger Client [Client = Program] One may use either a
Yahoo provided Avatar or an image available on Your own HD. [HD = Hard
Drive] I like Pidgin because unlike Psi it doesn't rely upon Transport
Agents to access other Messenger Programs /but/ it also _doesn't_ have
access to their Avatar Library. Pidgin will only display a chosen image
selected from One's own HD library.

My suggestion to Kathryn would be to Open Yahoo Messenger and when the
Avatar She desires is visible Right Click on it and choose 'Save Image
As' from the Context Menu. Once the Avatar/Image is on Her HD and _not_
just on the Yahoo Server then She may store it anywhere on Her System
and use the 'Modify Account' feature to 'Use this Buddy Icon' feature to
browse to wherever She has chosen to store it.

Pidgin is so feature rich that it is not the easiest IM/Chat Client for
the neophyte to pick up [Install] and use straight out of the box. I
can appreciate Kathryn's exasperation and admire You, Etan, for Your
willingness to assist Her. Being an Application Developer I can also
appreciate how confusing 'unconscious competence' can sometimes appear
to the truly lost.

Here is My heartfelt suggestion to Kathryn; Open any IM Program with
which You feel most comfortable and add Me as a Contact/Buddy using
[EMAIL PROTECTED] and I shall do My dead level best to guide You
through the intricacies of configuring Pidgin to Your liking.

Pidgin is a most excellent IM Client but I fear that Kathryn Etan may
have hit an impasse and I am more than willing to assume tutoring duties.

This offer, of course, assumes that Kathryn is still reading this List. :-\
