Re: [Talk-GB] How to add roundabouts?

2009-01-30 Thread Kærast

One thing the wiki page on roundabouts doesn't explain is that routing
software needs the roundabouts to be tagged highway=* in order for it
to be used. I don't know if this is an issue with the routing software
or whether the wiki page should be edited to make this clear, but for
now highway=* is important on a roundabout.

I discovered this last night whilst trying to route around north
Lincolnshire, and this morning pulled junction=roundabout for the whole
of the uk to look for other non-routable roundabouts. There were 53
roundabouts without a highway=* tag so I added highway=road and a
FIXME tag for all of them.

Before we go on to do the same thing for the whole of Europe, is it the
routing software or the wiki page that is wrong?

[Talk-GB] DECC Oil Wells Imported

2009-01-28 Thread Kærast
Hi,

Yesterday I got confirmation that the DECC shapefiles [1] are public
domain and can be used by us. The import of the oil wells was a fairly
simple job since there are no oil wells on the map already and the
shapefiles are fairly simple to parse.

There is no official tag for oil well, however the Canada import are
planning on using man_made=petroleum_well and so that is what I have
used. There are 11,015 apparently disused oil wells and 500 apparently
active oil wells, all of which have been imported with ref_no=* name=*
(where available) disused=yes (where no longer active) and
source=DECC. I say 'apparently' because the DECC stress they "accepts
no responsibility for loss, damage or inconvenience caused by errors or
omissions."

I guess the next stages are to propose the tag man_made=petroleum_well,
get these appearing on the map and then consider whether any of the
other shapefiles they have are useful to us.

Re: [Talk-GB] Yet another rail network map

2008-12-18 Thread Kærast

oy - less of the 'his' please!

I'm planning on developing mine further in the new year, largely for
personal learning, but I'd love a copy of the mapnik template you used
for you version - I may 'borrow' some server time over christmas to
re-render to as high a level zoom as I can.

I'm also planning on adding in an abandoned rail line in the new year
if I get chance to spend some time mapping Saddleworth as a whole, so
I'm certainly interested to hear people's views on how a historic rail
line now used as a bridle path should be used.

I'm also interested in tagging of line names and whether names should
be left in or made relations.

[Talk-GB] Data from Foia request

2008-12-17 Thread Kærast
Hi,

I received a response to a freedom of information request today with a
list of CCTV cameras owned by my local council

The exact locations aren't given, but I'm thinking I can track them all
down. However, the council's standard tagline is attached to the email
- that the information is confidential and intended for the recipient
only.

Does the fact that it's a freedom of information response affect the
disclaimer? Given I am only using the data for finding the cameras,
can I add the resulting finds to the map? Should I add the list of
cameras to somewhere on the wiki in order for other people to help
adding them in?

[Talk-GB] Saddleworth

2008-12-03 Thread Kærast
Hi,

I've been looking at Saddleworth where I used to live
(http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=53.5499&lon=-1.9963&zoom=13)
and there is lots missing, the roads aren't aligned with NPE, it's badly
tagged and there are bits which from memory are wrong.

It's too cold for me to be going out there doing mapping at the moment,
so is it worth me mapping it from a combination of NPE and memory given
the existing roads aren't aligned with NPE? Or should I just leave it
until somebody considers it warm enough to visit?

[Talk-GB] Possible Data Source For Bradford

2008-11-21 Thread Kærast
Hi,

Bradford Council provide public gis information on rights of way, and
other stuff at http://gis.bradford.gov.uk. Unfortunately it needs a
Windows computer and special software installing to be used, and so
I've been unable to look at exactly what is provided and whether it
would be useful to us.

Does somebody want to have a look and take on contacting them if it
seems useful? Even if they're not willing to open source the data, it
might still be useful to compare what we've got to see how complete we
are.
