[Talk-gb-westmidlands] Talk about OpenStreetMap by Andy Robinson

2011-02-13 Thread Peter Millar
Hi all,

Andy Robinson will be giving his famous talk about OpenStreetMap at a Coventry
Linux Users Group meeting.

The talk, on Tuesday 1st March 2011, begins at about 8pm, though people arrive
from before 7pm for a drink and meal. However, there is no obligation to even
have a drink.

The venue is The Castle pub, Little Park Street, Coventry, near the Council
House (it used to be the 'varsity' pub). To get to the meeting room: once in
pub, turn right, up a few steps, turn right again, ahead, then left and
straight ahead.

We need to fix a time in the morning.

I suggest we meet up later (?lunchtime) at the Red Lion Hotel.

Re: [Talk-gb-westmidlands] Mappa-Mercia social - July 1st - Bedworth

2010-06-10 Thread Peter Millar
Andy,

How about Atherstone?

There are at least 4 villages within three miles of the town.

Trains from Birmingham via Tamworth or Nuneaton, about two an hour. We could
meet at the cafe in the Co-op Superstore in Station Street, by the railway
station.

An alternative would be Rugeley to the NW of Cannock Chase. It also has a few
villages not too far away.

I hope a few of us can meet up.

The pub and train details for Thursday 1st July are now on the wiki.

Does anyone want to meet-up and do some mapping next Saturday (12th June)
somewhere around the Midlands?

2010-01-26 Thread Peter Millar
I think "Delete it and replace it with the building shape" would be the right
answer.

Please, though, copy any appropriate tags from the POI to the new shape before
deleting the POI; I've had perfectly good information go missing this way.

Hope to see you soon.

Hello all,

I've been trying to do my best to pull my weight again and get some editing
done. I finally started to add some of the info to the streets around the
Queens Arms from the street address mapping we did at one of the meets several
months ago.

What should I do with buildings that have previously just been noted with a POI
icon? Delete it and replace it with the building shape?

Hoping to catch up with you all again soon. I've not been able to make a
Thursday meet up for ages and I think I at least owe the folks who helped me
with the Stoke mapping party a drink or two, so I'll try and come along soon.

Re: [Talk-gb-westmidlands] Police Stations

2009-12-07 Thread Peter Millar
Brian,

Only one of the three police stations on Coventry is mapped. I'll visit the
other two as soon as possible. The substations are not mapped either.

There are two other police 'places' in Coventry I know of. One is no longer
open to the public and is still used by the police and currently mapped as a
amenity:police. Another is some kind of police office on a housing estate, open
a few hours a day, some days a week (not currently on the map). I think it is
where you might them by appointment. Any ideas for how to tag these?

Hi Christoph

It appears the police are pretty well organised on their web site with google
maps ( http://www.west-midlands.police.uk/maps/index.asp ). I think we should
still go ahead but maybe there won't be so much publicity potential. We need to
think through how we promote what we're doing. I'll slowly check which police
stations we already have mapped ( Peter could you do the same for Coventry?) We
can use the URL above as a reference

Hi everyone

I've persuaded a local software development company to ditch Google Maps and
switch to OSM, in return for which their Chairman has promised to complete our
fund-raising for sateliite imagery from various sources with whom he is in
contact. But we have a challenge - he has phase 1 of a West Midlands wide
project to deliver by mid-December to Sandwell MBC so it would be great if we
could fill in most of the blanks within Sandwell MBC boundaries by then. His
project particularly needs to have business- orientated landuse completed. This
guy is very influential and will be a good friend to have who will promote OSM
well. So let's see how far we can get with completing Sandwell!

Sounds an interesting possibility, though it is a bit further out (I guess
Five Ways station is the closest or a longer walk from New Street). What
we've noted from experience is that it's important also that the place isn’t
too noisy, otherwise it's too difficult to get a discussion going beyond a
one to one. Also it needs to be safe for locked up bikes. Any comments on
these two points?

I'm happy to give it a try. The Queens arms is perfectly ok, just missing
the wifi, which probably isn’t the end of the world when we consider the
winter months are very much social orientated rather than mapping.

What do others think?

Cheers

Andy

Lug radio Live is fast approaching, running on Sat 24th October.

This would seem a logical date to do a mapping party. While the lug folks
listen to lug stuff we can feed out and map, returning to spread the word at
lunchtime etc.

I'm due to talk about OSM at 15:00, not clear yet if they will have a proper
"exhibition" but I'm sure we can ad hoc something as required.

Who's available that weekend? Wolverhampton has much unloved area still to
map.

Cheers

Re: [Talk-gb-westmidlands] August Pub Meeting

2009-07-21 Thread Peter Millar

Hi,

That sounds good to me. I've been in contact with a few mappers in Coventry,
some of whom might be able to come along.

I don't know Warwick's pubs at all.

Subject: [Talk-gb-westmidlands] August Pub Meeting

Hi everyone

At the Lichfield meeting several people said they wouldn't be available for the
August meeting, scheduled for Thursday August 6th. I'm proposing for anyone
who's available ( can you let me know if you can make it) to meet in Warwick
which looks pretty vacant from a mapping perspective. Once I know who can come
I'll find a pub to meet in not too far from the train station

Regards

Brian

Re: [Talk-gb-westmidlands] mtbgreat britain.7z

2009-06-24 Thread Peter Millar

Adrian,

I downloaded and unzipped mtbgreat_britain.7z.zip to both Ubuntu and XP without
a problem, unpacks 54 files.
Unbuntu used its default archive manager, File Roller, and I used 7-zip on XP.

The file has both .7z.zip in the filename, could it be that you are missing one
of them?

Hi
I tried to open the zip file of the mtbgreat britain.7z from
http://openmtbmap.x-nation.de/maps/ and it says insert last disc of multi
volume set. I transfered it to the desk top but it says the zipped folder is
invalid or corrupted.

Any help you can provide would be most appreciated I am just trying to download
an autorouting map set for England

Could you help

many thanks

Richard Fairhust, our illustrious Potlatch creator jokingly on IRC moaned
that I had 6 days to get some mapping done in the Dudley Canal No. 1 and
Stourbridge canal areas in time for a piece he's doing in the next Waterways
World mag.

Always up for a challenge I said I would get it done as long as we got a
free copy. So if anyone can help let me know. I'll see what areas he's
looking at and add a note to the mappa mercia page on the wiki later.

Cheers

Andy

Re: [Talk-gb-westmidlands] Monthly social and some micro mapping

2009-04-30 Thread Peter Millar

Hi,

I'll try to get there for 7pm.

Would it be useful to map (or check) the turn restrictions at the same time - I
assume there are quite a few in a central area.

Also to check the map of the area, in advance, for streets without names and
other untidiness?

I should be able to come along but after 8... Which sounds like a terrible cop
out so I'll try and get some done beforehand as it's my neck of the woods we're
talking about.
