Re: [Talk-in] SoI / DST complain against Google.

2014-12-18 Thread Aditya Nag
I feel that this problem cannot be solved just by having a separate
server for OSM India:

(A) We would most probably be using OpenStreetMap's tile servers which
use planet.osm
(B) Even if we use our own tile server, we cannot fork the planet.osm
file to just change the borders of India. If we do that, we would have
to change the borders every time we update planet.osm file.

The borders would have to be resolved by consulting with the higher
powers in OSM.

Re: [Talk-in] Tag for wedding hall/kalyan mantap

2014-07-06 Thread Aditya Nag
In a town/city, certain number of weddings are held in rented
halls/buildings. These buildings can also be rented for other functions,
gatherings, meetings etc. For example, the functions held to celebrate the
coming of age of a Hindu Brahman, the reception held after the marriage are
also conducted there. Thus, we can tag wedding halls as
amenity=community_centre
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:amenity%3Dcommunity_centre.
Additionally, building=yes http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:building
can demarcate the structures within which the weddings happen. And the
ubiquitous *name=** tag might also be necessary.

Some of the buildings have a permanent *mandap*, some don't. I think the
presence or absence of a *mandap* can be explicitly mentioned using an
additional *mandap=yes/no* tag. However, to make this widespread and
India-specific one has to consult with the other community members first.
But again, openstreetmap is a free map :)

Can you list all such India-specific POIs in a separate thread? Maybe one
can start providing solutions for them.

Regards,
Aditya Nag

Re: [Talk-in] Unable to create Wiki ID

2014-06-20 Thread Aditya Nag
Hello Prasanth,

Essentially, the Wiki is denying to create your account because it
thinks that you are sending spam or providing means to do so. This may
be because your IP address is Blacklisted (that's what DNSBL means
:) by the Wiki. These sorts of Blacklists are also used by antivirus
software to block spam reaching you.

Try changing your IP address. If possible, use a dynamic IP address
instead of a static one. Personally, if I face such problem, I would
have used my smartphone (connected to the internet via the SIM
network, not via WiFi) to create the Wiki account. That way, the IP
address of the phone is bound to be different from the IP address of
the desktop/laptop you are using.

Aditya Nag.

Re: [Talk-in] Usage of www.surveykshan.gov.in

2013-10-23 Thread Aditya Nag
Guys, this is the reply I got from Survey of India office when I asked for
clarification of usage of surveykshan website-

We would like to inform you that Web Map Service portal of Survey of
India i.e. www.surveykshan.gov.in is designed keeping in mind that one can
view / print their area of interest / location without purchasing entire
map i.e. for individual use only.

However, for such purpose digital data can be purchased from Survey of
India by duly signing License Agreement / MOU.

I think the second paragraph was a reply to my query about updating place
names from surveykshan into osm database.

Well I managed to run it inside Firefox using the IE Tabs version 2

Otherwise one has to manually switch the browser engine each time the page

I do not know the exact location of those villages nor the accuracy of AND
data. Neither can I easily verify the location of those villages. Hence I
propose the following workaround :

1. Create a new node very close to the original village node, so that the
new node is not connected to any way.
2. Copy all tags from the original node to the new node.
3. Delete all tags from the original node.

Will that be fine?

[Talk-in] Moving place=village tags in Odisha

2013-08-31 Thread Aditya Nag
A large number of place tags in Odisha are imported from AND. Most of these
tags are on nodes which are part of a way. The OSM wiki recommends to place
a node at the center of a settlement and tag it appropriately. Can I remove
such erroneous nodes from the middle of the way and move them to the
settlement center?

Most of these nodes are very close to the actual settlements. Hence, there
is minimal confusion about where to place those nodes.
