Re: [Talk-in] Geospatial Information Regulation Bill propsal

2016-05-05 Thread Johnson Chetty
Just my two cents:

This is the Indian government trying to reduce the spread of information
that is non-conducive to national interests.

However, OSM can dispute that our freedom of speech is being restrained.
The honest counter to that is that we are entitled to freedom of speech and
opinion, but also to bear the consequences of what we say.
If what we maintain as a divisive opinion to national interests regardless
of who is in government, it puts us in a tricky place..
Ergo: Google shows India oriented maps for requests from Indian IPs and
China oriented maps for Chinese IPs.

Where does that leave us?
OSM is apolitical by nature and intends to stay that way.
So from the government's perspective, the collective opinion of a group of
Indian and non Indian geography publishers (OSM) does tantamount as being
non conducive to national interests. I think this leaves us in a position
where we would be open for litigation.

Any thoughts?

All the same, I do not believe that having untrained and transient
volunteers managing a service like this is at all viable, and don't know
why such a simple question has led to such a prolonged debate.

Prolonged debate? We had set the tile server up in April last year but the
interest did not pick up. There was no interest in it from anyone after the
system stood!

Nagarjun had written:

gnowledge lab has recently acquired a deidated server for openstreetmap.
Johnson, Sanjay, Sathyakam, Sajjad and Arun have already promised to
maintain the server. (included them in cc since I am not sure if I am
subscribed to the talk-in group.

I was the only one who got my hands dirty with this with inputs from mostly
from Arun and Sajjad.

I thought that this effort would be in the same vein, that it would take a
good amount of time to start with the new install and for someone to take
ownership of this task to see it through.

And rather than wait for so long, the server which was already set up could
have easily been used by those who wanted to play with the stylesheets
until things actually materialized. Was it offensive to have stated the
availability of it? At least we would have had some understanding to set up
a new machine more easily, in doing so.

This is why I recommended against hosting at HBCSE-TIFR, where I am on
staff, and know how poorly resourced we are at the moment.

i have asked Johnson for credentials on the present server , may be we
can use it as a staging server.

My recommendation is to not use it at all except for purely temporary
 purposes.

The machine I guess should be now used on an interim basis (unless Dr.

Feel free to use it until we get a new machine (hopefully soon)
We are running a tree mapping service (trees.metastudio.org) which will use
the tile service.
We plan to get some foliage/greenery specific stylesheets for the tile
server. So the tile service will be running nonetheless.

Happy new year!

Time to get cracking on this !

Dr. Nagarjun has already provided server space. And we had done some
preliminary work there some months back. It just sort of fizzled out.

I believe I had made a login for Satya and of course Arun.
Uh... let's find time to do this soon.

I feel that this problem cannot be solved just by having a separate

 (A) We would most probably be using OpenStreetMap's tile servers which
 use planet.osm

We will have our own tileserver and our own tile style, which is the
whole point. The data used is still planet.osm . But the generated tiles
 are customized for India

 (B) Even if we use our own tile server, we cannot fork the planet.osm
file to just change the borders of India. If we do that, we would have
to change the borders every time we update planet.osm file.

The change needs to be done at the map stylesheet. We just need to ignore
certain border segments so that it is not rendered in the tiles. This is
 very simple to do.

Here is one such proposal from Arun which came up earlier this year
 https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/IN:Proposal

can we just get this done instead of talking about it for years now !

 Hi GN

Tree species or other detailed data are somewhat a niche bit of
information for what started off as road mapping software. Hence the
standard renderer does not show it, as it also does not show a lot of the
other info added, for instance population of towns, et.c. A specialised
renderer would need to be created to display such data. Maybe this can be
done using a stylesheet with some of the existing render software.

For editing purposes, as you can see at
http://josm.openstreetmap.de/wiki/Styles there is a stylesheet for JOSM
that will display the spread of the tree, and I imagine it can also be
modified to show the name, species or other information. (It might be of
interest to read this contribution by the writer of that stylesheet -
https://www.openstreetmap.org/user/AndrewBuck/diary/17551)

I'm not sure what you mean by type? There is no tag shown under this name
at http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:natural%3Dtree . Trees would
ideally be shown by their botanic name (genus and species, or taxon), at
least the genus part of it. And these should be botanically correct, e.g.
genus=Cocos. If it is not known, then the 'name' tag could be used with a
common name, e.g. name=coconut.

 Hi

We are beginning a project starting 6th of Jan to map trees in Mumbai,
and
later we will spread this to other areas in the country as well. Some
questions regarding the preparedness of OSM for this purpose.

 1. when we add a tree, we also add its name etc. however, this
information
does not appear. The tree dot is visible but does not have any info.
One has
to go to edit interface to check the information added. How to go about
this?

 2. under the type of trees, we would like to add some more types. is
this
possible? how to go about doing this?

 any help will be appreciated.

There is OpenTreeMap (OTM) which is an app that does the same. . I think
the data can be ported back to osm. I had set up an OTM instance a while
back. I did not check the import to OSM though.
