[Talk-us] Procedures for Bulk Uploading Road Centerline Data

2009-09-30 Thread Spencer Riddile
If someone wanted to upload public domain, state road centerline data to OSM,
what procedures could they take? It seems like what we would like to do is
overwrite Tiger data but preserve user contributed data. I did see an example
of using an opensource GIS plugin (RoadMatcher) that compares road networks
(http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Geobase_NRN_-_OSM_Map_Feature) before
uploading road data. Are there other examples of procedures people have used
or best practices to bulk upload road centerline data?

[Talk-us] Uploading Shapefiles to OSM

2009-03-23 Thread Spencer Riddile

I've been researching ways to upload public domain shapefiles to OSM. Is there
anyone experienced doing this? Two examples of shapefiles I would like to
upload include bus stops (points) and building footprints (polygons).

Regarding uploading a points shapefile . . could I convert that to either a csv
or gpx file and upload?

Thanks for you help.

Spencer

Nope. What I've done is:
* Set up Mapnik + OGC Server to serve a WMS.
* Opened qgis, a Desktop GIS Client.
* Added the OSM WMS
* Opened the map properties, checked the 'enable on the fly
   transformation' checkbox
* Added the blacksburg, va "Buildings" layer.
* Export to PNG.

(One of the things that people tned to fail to take into account in OSM
is that there are pretty great GIS visualization tools out there
already...)

Using OSM tools, I'd recommend the 'polyshp2osm' tool in
http://svn.openstreetmap.org/applications/utils/import/shp2osm/ , but
you'll need some technical expertise to manage the conversion and the
upload. If you don't have any, there may be other people on this list
who could help with conversion and managing the upload.

Re: [Talk-us] U.S. Bike Route 76

Chris,

Good suggestion using operator=AASHTO. I decided to go with network=ncn,
operator=AASHTO

The advantage is that "ncn" isn't the name of the U.S. bike route
system ;-). Or, less glibly, the US Bike Route System isn't part of
the UK National Cycle Network.

But if other countries' mappers have also adopted ncn for their
top-level bike networks then the cart has already left the barn on
that, so it's not too important. It just means that a programmatic
tool that extracts bike networks for a particular country from the OSM
data is going to have to be smarter than simply looking at the network
tag.

Using e.g. operator=usbrs or operator=AASHTO (AASHTO designates the US
bike route system) along with network=ncn would probably be the next
best thing.

Re: [Talk-us] U.S. Bike Route 76

2009-03-11 Thread Spencer Riddile
Chris,

What would the advantage/disadvantage be of using a different network name
("usbrs" vs. "ncn") for U.S. bike routes. The author of open cycle map would
have to adjust their symbolization if we started using "usbrs". Is it good to
try to keep some international standard even though trail and route systems may
be different in various ways.

Assuming you're tagging using relations, that format is correct
(although you could adopt a different network name than "ncn" which is
of British origin; using "US" would make sense here); if you are not
using relations, although I think it's probably better if you do, then
the ncn_* tags Adam suggested should be used directly on the ways.

With relations, you could use name=Bike Route 76.

[Talk-us] U.S. Bike Route 76

2009-03-09 Thread Spencer Riddile
I'm working on tagging Bike Route 76 in the Montgomery County, VA area. Is
anyone else working on tagging national bike routes in the U.S.?

Here is the combination of tags I'm using:

type=route
route=bicycle
network=ncn
ref=76

Does that look correct? Can I add a name for the route (e.g. bike route 76)?

[Talk-us] Tags for US Forest Service GIS Trail Data

2009-03-05 Thread Spencer Riddile
I'm working on figuring out what tags to use for the fields/columns that are
included in the USFS GIS trail data that I am going to import into OSM. Has
anyone set a precedent for this already? Would it make sense for me to add a
section to the wiki page for the USFS
(http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/US_Forest_Service_Data) in an effort to
standardize? This would be for trails specifically and would follow what has
been established on the Hiking wiki page
(http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Hiking).

National Forest Trails
tags proposed:

* owner = national_forest, private_on_nf, private_noton_nf, county,
state, city_town
* closure_status = open, closed, restricted, decommissionedAlso, are
there tags to keep information about metadata like the data source (i.e. gps,
digitized, etc)?

[Talk-us] Public Domain Non-GPS Data Question

2009-02-24 Thread Spencer Riddile
The town of Blacksburg, VA has some GIS data publicly available on a
website.

There is also U.S. Forest Service data for the George Washington and Jefferson
National Forest.

I would like to upload some of this to OSM. Is that OK? Any
advice?  Thanks!___
