Colour groups (was Re[2]: Need direction and a question)

Hello Vladimir,

On Friday, September 01, 2000 at 00:46:15 GMT +0200 (which was 3:46 PM
where I live) witnesses say Vladimir Mincev typed:

> Hello Januk,

JA>> dealt with the message appropriately.

> Can you explain to me what is coloured message? Just highlighted message with
> another colour?

It can be highlighted with another colour, font, bolding, italics,
etc. See Options -> Message List Colours.
You can set up colour groups there.

> I was looking for "colour group" in help file but with no success.

Hmm, this is a recently added feature. It might not have made it
 into the help file yet.

> How can I colour each message from each sender (for example: from
> Mike - blue, from Tom - yellow...)

First create your colour groups as mentioned above. Then you can
create filters (Account -> Sorting Office/Filters) to create filters
that can apply the colour groups automatically. If you want, you can
apply a colour group manually by right clicking on the message in the
message list pane. Select colour groups and view the options.

Play around with it a bit and enjoy.

If you need more specific help, please ask.

Can you explain to me what is coloured message? Just highlighted message with
another colour? I was looking for "colour group" in help file but with no success.
How can I colour each message from each sender (for example: from Mike - blue, from
Tom - yellow...)

No, I think I won't stop signing my msgs for the same reason I use the
"TheBat"-info at the end of my mails: to tell people about the existence and to
encourage them to use these pgms.

MDP> While harvesting from PGP signatures is possible, I don't think it's

Yep, you may be right and it would be too late anyway: our msgs are already in
the archive. Anyone harvesting the adress could have done this already or will
subscribe to the list where it is easier to harvest the adresses from the PGP-
or S/MIME-sigs.

I don't want to edit the message, I would like to take a single
sentence from the message and put into the reply to that message. On
a quick glance it seemed that RE's could have done the job, but it
seems that they would take some time to learn. I didn't want to invest
the time unless someone who knew said that's where the answer lied.

To the original question. When you're connected to the internet you've
got an IP that is unique. It's assigned to a provider (query the ARIN,
APNIC, RIPE etc. for it). You can at 99,9% use the SMTP of this
provider w/o things like POP-before-SMTP or SMTP AUTH even if your
company/university doesnt want you to do it. If you have a sample
Internet IP address (not RFC1918-hosts!) then simply (under DOS) enter
"nslookup ". this will give you the reverse name. Then you dig
it into the MX seeker (nslookup, then querytype=MX) and it tells you
your SMTP server :) If this sounds too complicated, feel free to drop
me an offlist eMail and I'll gladly try to helpy you to find the SMTP.

Can't be done. The archive is just another member of the list which

I realize that - it was a semi-joke :-). I was suggesting that there
have been a number of good explanations on the list, even in the short
time I've been here. If these were collected and organized, it would
be a most helpful document, IMHO. Could actually be outside the help

One doesn't have to do it from a batch file. By simply launching TB
from the batch file with the required command line parameters either
TB will be loaded to process the commands or an already running copy
will be sent them. Only if you were writing a program to interface
with TB would you need to do anything with a mutex.

OTOH, to be *in* your filtering batch process, TB *must* have been
running to trigger the process in the first place .

Aha. The actions are kill or ignore - does kill remove the message
from the server without downloading it? Does ignore leave it there
undeleted?

Given a (hopefully) small fraction of spam, why is this preferred over
simply sending the msg to a spam folder, and catching those false
positives?

Thanks for the tip!

Again, from help:

Note that you can run only one copy of The Bat! at your PC at a time,
but if you try to start another copy of The Bat!, all Command Line
parameters will be seamlessly passed to the running copy of the
program and executed.

I assume this means one could do the import without having to
  start up TB each time?

For those who are familiar with programming we give a hint: The Bat!
checks the file called TheBat.IPC which is located in the same
directory where The Bat! executable (TheBat.exe) file is located.

When does TB do this check? Only at startup :-((?

To ensure that a copy of The Bat! is running on a computer, a program
which wants to interact with The Bat! must check whether the mutex
called “The Bat!” is owned by a process and if it is not, The Bat!
must be started.

How does one do this from a batch file?

Ever closer to a good filtering solution :-)...

Refer to the TB Help Index and search for /IMPORT. This is a command
line switch which allows you to automate message import.

z> BTW, what is "Selective Download" intended to do in the filter
z> list?

It used to be called "Kill Filter". It allows you to filter messages
before they are downloaded by only reading the headers to make the
decision about whether or not the message is required. The downside of
using Selective Download filters is that message download becomes a
two pass affair for all messages. Pass 1 downloads all headers and
checks against the Selective Download filters. Pass 2 downloads the
messages which have survived the selection tests.

To prevent some messages to be download from the server and to delete
or to leave them on the server.

Adding selective download filters adds a phase of downloading headers
of the messages prior to downloading mail from the server.

It`s for applying a filter rule directly on the mail server, just
before downloading new messages. This could be used as a SPAM Stop.
The examined Headers are from:, subject:, received:, to: and the
whole kludges. By filtering of received: (the whole routing-path of
the message) there is a good change to recognize spam.

Threads w/Agent

2000-09-01 Thread Ben Pugsley

Hi,

Are there plans in the future, to improve threading?

To get threading to be useable, I now export the Folder contents as a UNIX
file, and import it into Agent. In agent I can easily follow the threads.

The Messages that I want to keep, I can Export from Agent in Unix format, and
import it back into TB.

It sure would be nice to do it all in Bat. :-))

Is there any hope?

That's where I got stuck, too.

Found in TB! help file

---8<-
/IMPORT command allows batch importing of e-mail messages into a specified folder from
multiple RFC-822 message files or from UNIX mailbox files. The syntax of /IMPORT
command is:

/IMPORT[parameter1[;parameter2[;parameter3[...]]]

Possible parameters are (parameter may be identified by two or more names):

USER=value or U=value - the value is the name of the destination account. If
no FOLDER parameter is specified, the destination folder will be Inbox of the given
account.

PASSWORD=value or P=value - the value is the password which will unlock
the account if it is needed.

FOLDER=value or F=value - the value is the destination folder’s pathname. If
the pathname does not include account name, The Bat! will search all accounts for a
folder with such name; the first folder found will be used as the destination folder.
If the specified folder is not found, Inbox folder of the destination account is used.

UNIX or X - this parameter tells The Bat! that input files are in UNIX
mailbox format. By default, input files are treated as separate RFC-822 messages.

READ or R - when this parameter is used, all imported messages will be
marked as read. By default, all imported messages are marked unread.

FILE=value or IN=value or
INFILE=value or I=value - the value is a file mask with a pathname of input
files. /IMPORT command can have unlimited number of FILE parameters.

DELETE or DEL or W - if this parameter is specified, all processed files
will be deleted after successful send of import operation.

Examples of /IMPORT command:

/IMPORTU=”My account 1”;FOLDER=”Friends and relatives\Sam”;IN=C:\InFiles\Sam\*.MSG

/IMPORTF=”\\My account 1\Business\Unsorted”;UNIX;FILE=C:\InFiles\Unsorted\*.mbx;READ

Notes:

1. To separate parameters, use semicolon (“;” character). Do not use spaces
between parameters when use /IMPORT command as a command line parameter because a
space-separated mask will be treated as the next command line parameter and will not
be processed.
1. If a parameter value contains space characters, put it into quotation marks.
If a value contains quotation marks, you should use upper commas (“ ’ ” character).

How can i reimport the modified message automaticly ? My Batch-File
for removing the egroups-adv works fine, but the only way i see to
bring back the message is manual import.

In a word - no. We had expected to have seen an early alpha release of
it by now but nothing has come out. We have seen a number of V2
features being implemented in v1 as an apparent technology proving
exercise - for instance, the message base format was reworked a few
versions back. Other than that, no clues I'm afraid.

Nobody really knows...

Months and months ago, Leif Gregory interviewed Stefan Tanurkov of

LG> When will the beta be released?
ST> Do not know yet. Soon, I hope :-) I suppose (but not promise) that
ST> it will be February of this year.

So... I advise you keep waiting very patiently. :-)
