[Texascavers] Sinkhole Conference: registration and call for papers open!

2014-10-07 Thread George Veni via Texascavers
Dear Friends,

Registration for the 14th Multidisciplinary Conference on Sinkholes and the
Engineering and Environmental Impacts of Karst is now open! Registration is
open not just for the conference but also for its four excellent short courses
and field trip.

Additionally, we are now accepting full papers as well as abstracts (the
deadline for abstracts is 1 December 2014; papers may be submitted later if the
abstract is submitted by the deadline).

Just as important, if you are a student or know one, we encourage students to
apply for the Barry F. Beck Student Scholarship that includes free registration
to the conference plus up to $1,000 for travel expenses. We encourage
organizations and working professionals to donate to the scholarship fund to
provide even more scholarships to help boost the careers of young karst
scientists. All donations are tax deductable.

Generally known as "The Sinkhole Conference," for 30 years this conference
series has been the premier conference for all aspects of karst geoscience and
related engineering and environmental issues-and not just sinkholes. This next
Sinkhole Conference will be held in Rochester, Minnesota, USA, on 5-9 October
2015, and jointly organized with the Minnesota Groundwater Association it
should be an exceptional meeting!

The Sinkhole Conference now has a permanent website at the easy-to-remember
address: http://www.sinkholeconference.com/. Bookmark and visit it for
information on how to register, submit an abstract and paper, find all
deadlines, details on the Beck Scholarship, and other information. It also
includes the proceedings of the 13th Sinkhole Conference for free download. The
"Destination" tab has a lot of great Information on Rochester, transportation,
hotels, maps, dining, etc.

If you have any questions, let me know. Please distribute this information to
anyone you think may be interested.

On behalf of the many fine engineers and geologists on the Sinkhole Conference
Organizing Committee, we look forward to seeing you one year from now in
Rochester!

George

[Texascavers] Another new LED headlamp

2014-10-07 Thread David via Texascavers
Coast lights has a new headlamp called the HL46 sold at Lowe's for $30 plus
tax.

It looks like the perfect newbie headlamp for those that want to start with
something nice.

I do not like the switches on their low end products, meaning this one.

But it is compact enough for the average west Texas cave. It has good
light settings, and water -resistant enough to take in humid passages.

This lamp would be overkill for Travis County caves, and Enchanted Rock
Cave.

Disclaimer: I did not take it out of the package, but once owned the
previous version.

It includes 4 hardhat clips.

My bet is one would most likely use the low setting while caving, and the
high setting while hiking along the dark trail from the cave.

[Texascavers] AMCS sales at TCR

2014-10-07 Thread Mixon Bill via Texascavers
As usual, the Association for Mexican Cave Studies will be selling
publications at TCR on Saturday before the banquet and on Sunday
morning until about 10. The things that are new since the last TCR are

AMCS Activities Newsletter 37, May 2014, 160 pages. See contents at http://www.mexicancaves.org/nl/37.htm
. Softbound $18, hardbound $28.

AMCS Bulletin 25, San Agustín 2013 Expedition, edited by Chris Jewell,
published June 2014, 40 pages. See http://www.mexicancaves.org/bul/bul25.html
. $8.

A Quest for the Secrets of Xibalba, beautifully illustrated summary of
the activities of Czech cave divers in Quintana Roo, including the
integration of various underwater caves into a system 75 kilometers
long. 113 pages and large color folded map, hardbound. Published 2013
in the Czech Republic. See http://www.mexicancaves.org/other/Xibalba.html
. $30.

Most other books in our catalog (http://www.mexicancaves.org/

in particular that you want to be sure is there, e-mail sa...@mexicancaves.org
 before noon on Friday.

[Texascavers] schedule for Texas Cavers Reunion

2014-10-07 Thread Mixon Bill via Texascavers

For the benefit of new (or old) people who may be confused:

I have no idea where the notion of starting the TCR on Thursday comes
from. Perhaps there will be a very small number of people there
Thursday night setting up things like the hot tub. As always, actual
events begin Friday evening; I believe some sort of wine-tasting has
been announced. Otherwise, Friday evening is just random partying and
settling in. (There are a number of people there by mid-afternoon on
Friday setting up publications sales and the kitchen and maybe staking
out grotto turf.) If you can only come for a day, Saturday is it:
climbing contest, book and equipment sales, parade, cooking and
banquet, speechifying, bonfires, mud wrestling... Sunday morning there
may be TCMA or TSA meetings.

How can anyone have imagined that the major events at a party people
have to drive a long way to could be other than on Saturday? -- Mixon

Charlie,

OTR is where it has always been, in West Virginia. However TCR, the Texas
Cavers Reunion, is this weekend, Thursday through Sunday. There have been
numerous announcements on CaveTex and Facebook to let you know that this year
it is at the Guadalupe River RV Park and Campground in Spring Branch on Highway
281. And the food is excellent.
