[SWR] Is this hole that appeared in Siberia a sinkhole or a blowout

2014-07-15 Thread Michael Lorimer

It looks like a sinkhole or some kind of
collapse from the air. However, an oblique view looks like
there is elevation along the sides, which would imply an
  explosion. What do you think?

[SWR] A Man Falls Into Hidden Sinkhole in his backyard and dies.

2013-09-19 Thread Michael Lorimer
It would nice, within reason, to have a sinkhole
in your backyard, but not to die in it.

If I would hazard a guess, it is something that one would get from
the south end of a north facing Shriner.

Congratulations David, I would wager that all of the new cave
passages that you helped to discover would add up to more than 76
miles.

Mark,

Thats a
good and fair question. It also ties more into biology so
Ill defer to Jim Kennedy to answer more authoritatively
than I can as a hydrogeologist. However, in the comments I
sent to the San Antonio City Council I pointed out that the
high-density development is also over the Edwards Aquifer
Recharge Zone. Such developments have been demonstrated to
diminish the volume of water replenishing the regions
primary water supply as well as having a much greater risk
of degrading the quality of the water. While bats are
getting the emphasis, this type of development is also bad
for people who rely on the Edwards.

Thanks for the
interesting post, George.

I do have one
question, though, and I am NOT picking sides here:

Whats the
difference between houses 800 to 900 yards away from the
Bracken Cave entrance and bats living under the Congress
Street Bridge in Austin, smack dab in the middle of downtown
Austin?

The Austin
colony seems to be functioning fine and thriving, may I say,
growing? And the buildings (read high rises) are much
closer than 800 to 900 yards.

Just playing
dumb here, so please dont advocate having me drawn and
quartered and left in a pile of guano!

Inquiring minds
just want to know.

Re: [SWR] Remembrance

2013-04-03 Thread Michael Lorimer
One cold winter's evening in 1975 or was it 1976,
the Las Cruces crowd from the Mesilla Valley
Grotto were hanging out in my 1973 gas guzzling
Dodge Tradesman van drinking beer. Tom asked to
join us. Of course, he was welcomed and he climbed
in and sat down behind the driver's seat. As
host, I asked him if he would like a beer. Sadly,
he shook his large head and said, No. Then I
had an inspiration, Tom, would you like a milk?
His eyes lit up and his mouth grew wide in a broad
smile of anticipation and he gratefully replied,
Yes. I would like a milk. I went out into the
cold and rustled around in the cooler until I
found it. I had remembered that we had brought
with us a 4 ounce carton of milk. As I made my
way to return to the van, I remembered that Tom
used to down a whole gallon of milk for breakfast
and I was afraid that my meager offering wouldn't
be enough to satisfy him. When I returned to the
warmth of the van, I placed that tiny vessel of
milk in Tom's large outstretched hands. He was as
pleased as if I had given him a whole gallon and
he nursed that Lilliputian carton of milk for the
rest of the evening as we laughed, talked about
caving and our wonderful underground adventures.
I do miss him.

[NMCAVER] Geronimo's Cave entrance was blasted!

2010-07-12 Thread Michael Lorimer
Geronimo's cave is a small cave in the Robledo
Mountains in Dona Ana
County, New Mexico. Still it is the second
longest (and maybe the
largest cave) in the county. The story as I heard
it, is that about a
year (or more) ago, there was a great bang that
came for the entrance of
the cave. The person telling me the story said
that a friend of hers
heard the bang and looked up and saw a great cloud
of dust and debris at
the entrance of the cave. She said that the
people who went up to the
cave said that there was a crack that came from
the entrance and went
down to the river (possibly an erosion scar). The
cave entrance was
still open. Apparently according to the story
that was told to me, one
Leewayne Preece tried to blast the entrance shut
because he was tired of
people crossing his land to access the cave.
There is a northernly
access to the cave through what I believe is a
locked gate (which
according to the records of the Dona Ana
Assessor's office cross the
edge of Preece's land). There is another easterly
access via crossing
the Rio Grande that goes through BLM land and
International Boundary
Commission land ( a winter route when the river is
low). I have cc'ed
the BLM and they should take this matter very
seriously as cave

rescources in Dona Ana county are rare.

[NMCAVER] A WNS Idea

2010-06-23 Thread Michael Lorimer
As far as the cause of White Nose Syndrome goes, is it possible that the
cause is not so much a new or resistant fungus, but the lack of
something or the death of something that consumes the fungus? Maybe
there was a symbiotic mite or some other critter that eats a naturally
occurring fungus and controls its growth? Maybe an insecticide carried
by insecticide resistant insects that are consumed by the bats is
killing off the mites (which are not resistant to insecticide)? Without
the 'mites' the fungus grows unchecked. I submit this as food for
thought. Maybe some person that is smarter than I am will either shoot
it down or run with it.
