Is anybody in the Houston area going to the Texas Speleological Center (
the TSC ) tomorrow, Saturday, the 10th ?

I am planning to attend the celebration of life to be held there.


Disclaimer:

My only drama going on, outside of my normal drama,  is that I met a
strange person on Craigslist yesterday, that claims they are going to let
me move into their apartment tonight.So over the next several days, I
am hoping to resolve my drama related to moving some of my stuff out of my
rental storage unit and into that person's apartment.

Other than that, I have no excuse for not attending.

Texas Speleological Center on Saturday afternoon, April 27th ?

In theory, I could take off work and go.

But doing the trip alone would be kind of pushing it, especially if I have
to drive my Sequoia.

I can probably leave the west side of Houston ( around Dairy-Ashford and
Bellaire Blvd. ), by noon on Saturday.

On a more personal note, I signed my first office lease today for my
tiny business.  My new office will be located in Hedwig Village, Texas.

It is a closet sized space, but in a nice building. I only plan to use

office to relax between deliveries. Something I was only able to do
prior
to Hurricane Harvey, when I was living in a motel. Next week, I only

to have a full-fledged normal office.

[Texascavers] Houston related - regarding GHG alumni

One of the founding members of Greater Houston Grotto
is in the hospital.

It is Mike Connolly ( husband of caver Teresa Connolly )

He joined GHG around 1971 and I believe he was one of the Rice students,
that re-organized GHG from the defunct ( but still active ) Rice
Speleological Society.

He was very active socially in GHG up until about 1993 or so, but he still
showed up at meetings once a year way into 2005 or so, and I think he showed
up at Christmas parties only after that.   I have not personally seen
him since Jim
McLane's funeral around 2016, and had not seen him in several years
prior to that.

Mike was really into computers, and tech stuff back in the 80's and
90's. He would sometimes come
to a meeting and show off - "hey folks,  I just built a smartphone out
of a cigar-box
and duct-tape," and this was before Apple had marketed the iPod mp3 player.

Mike is in the ICU at Houston Methodist in the Medical Center, but he can
not
have visitors.He is hoping for a heart and kidney transplant, but
he is still on the list.

I think Mike and I went caving once in "Brehmer Cave," northwest of
New Braunfels,
around 1994.I had several opportunities to go caving with him, but
it just never
worked out.Since his wife also loved caving, they took their kids
caving back in the 80's.

Mike may be the only surviving member of the tragic story about two
young Rice University students
that drowned while spelunking in "Grutas de Carrizal."I do not
recall if he was on that trip, but it is all
written down somewhere.The story somehow seems part of my
mentoring, as I had
been in Carrizal many times, both as an A.S.S. member, GHG member, and
as an independent
caver.   I also knew several members of that trip, and I know it
weighed very heavy on Jon
Everage.

Anyways, the authorities at Rice University, disbanded the R.U.S.S.
after the accident, but by then
the other cavers were allegedly mostly already out of school and
working in jobs.

I am pretty sure Rice had some sort of eco-sport extra-mural program
in the 1990's that did a lot of
spelunking.   I made numerous efforts to get them to hang out with me,
and always tried
to invite them to the East Texas Caver's Cookout, but they never
returned my calls.

Sidenote:I seem to recall that the first time that I ever heard of
someone purposely jumping off a
structure to test their dynamic climbing rope and harness was a
student at Rice jumping off
the back of the football stadium.That was around 1985 or 1986.
My first thought of that was that
it was insane.It was about 80 or 90 feet off the ground.   I may
have that story confused with another university.

Is anybody out there close friends with the daughter of
former caver Jim McLane ?

Some of her acquaintances here in Houston ( GHG alumni )
are very very worried about her.

Have you seen her post anything recently on social media ?

I do not personally have contact with her and only hear vague rumors, as
I do not have steady contact with any cavers in east Texas ( or anywhere ? )

The vague rumor is that her whereabouts have been unknown for 6 weeks, and
she has not
checked in with somebody she should have checked in with. Maybe another
possible rumor
was that she had maybe felt like that she had run out of options, or had
fallen ill. If nobody knows, then maybe it
is time to call for help, but I did not want to over-react, and I don't
know anything, so do
not want to get involved, especially since I have a forte for making things
worse.

She and I are not Facebook friends and I seldom use Facebook.   Her last
Facebook message
( which was vague ) responding to an earlier message from me was August
15th, and she did not
respond to my last message on November 30th. However, I only briefly
knew her
when she was in middle school. And had only met her again during her
dad's funeral, and
she did not seem to know me as well as I knew her. As I was a friend of
her dad's
 for over 20 years, and he or his girlfriend would occasionally talk about
her during
dinner conversations.

Her mother lives up around Oregon or Idaho, and changed her name to Etsy or
something
like that. I saw her for a second at the Nevada NSS Convention, I
think. I can only assume
that her and her mother are estranged, but maybe she might know if her
daughter is okay.Do
any of you have a way to ask her ?

While I am on this subject, I strongly feel that her dad's Will was a
forgery.I do not know how
many people saw it, but another person that knew Jim better than me, was a
100% certain that
the Will was a forgery. I wanted to tell the police, but I had no
proof.I also wanted to tell the
police that his passing was suspicious. But again, I had nothing to
offer other than my gut
feeling. It is sad when our friends pass away, but even sadder when
they pass away when we
are upset with them.   Jim had a birthday party shortly before he passed
away.I regret that
I missed going to it.


On a totally different note,

I have not had a chance to look into this next topic yet, but I heard
that former GHG caver Mike Connally had fallen ill. His wife Teresa was
active on Facebook,
and I have his email somewhere.That is on my to-do list later in the
week.

The good news is that I made contact with caver Kenny McGee, and he and his
wife seem to be
healthy.

Today is the18th Wedding Anniversary with my estranged-wife ( I think, or
maybe 19 ).   We
are still legally married.Our daughter will be 15 in seven months, and
she now realizes there
is some communication issues going on.I will be 55, in about less than
5 months, but I think
I feel much older.There is no way, I could do any serious caving, even
if there were a cave
nearby.It would have to be a cave I could float through on an
inner-tube.

I am curious if anyone from Houston is wanting to carpool to TCR ?

As of 10-6-17, I am not planning on attending.

However, I will probably procrastinate late Friday, and decide to go at the
very last minute, maybe even leave Houston on Saturday morning.

It is likely that I will be in Brenham on Friday night.


On a different note,

The two courthouse where I deliver 99% of my documents has been closed 44
days with no end in sight.   So in theory, I have plenty of time to kill.
I just am not mentally up to a road-trip.

Ironically, as I write this, my arm is being heavily twisted to chauffeur
my estranged-wife to Reynosa, Mexico tonight for a ludicrous 36 hours of
family insanity.

I need a stress-free vacation next to a waterfall.   I tried Turner Falls
in Oklahoma a few weeks ago, but that was not what I needed.

In theory, I could leave Houston tonight around 9 p.m. for a road-trip.

The chance of me attending the TSA Convention ( morning and afternoon
Saturday activities ) is about 10%, but the chance of me showing up for the
evening Saturday activities only just to say "Hello," are about 30%.

I am certain I could not get there until Saturday morning.

The reality of my dilemma, is that I need to go someplace with a remote
waterfall and do some mental defragmentation.
That idea does not seem feasible.

Blowing off all the things I need to do near Houston, is a tough call.
Like I my daughter and I have not seen each other in 6 days.And
theoretically, I am on call for a difficult delivery on the city of
Baytown.   If I were to miss that and then have to squeeze it in my
schedule next week, then that would be unpleasant.

I am just saying I am pondering the idea of showing up, while pondering the
meaning of life and other trivialities.

Is anyone from Houston interested in driving to Bandera this weekend and
saying hello to a few cavers and then high-tailing it back to Houston a few
hours later ??

I just paid $ 210 for a seedy Houston motel for Friday, Saturday and
Sunday, and I have work and family stuff going on this weekend near or at
the motel.

I can provide luxurious 4x4 Sequoia and most of gas ?   But I need to sleep
and snore very loudly while someone else drives.

[Texascavers] Houston related - a guest room

If any cavers find themselves in downtown Houston, looking for a place to
sleep, then I might have an option for you.

My slumlord has evicted my floormates in the old quadriplex where I live,
and I have convinced him that he should consider renting the entire floor
to me. Meanwhile, he says I can use the apartment for free until the March
rent is due, or the next tenants move in.
So I am house-sitting for 2 weeks, while I search for a way to fit this
expansion into my budget.

I need to find a roommate who needs to live near downtown Houston so bad,
that they would live in sub-human standards.   Then I could afford to rent
it and clean the place up.

The ideal person would be a student at University of Houston Downtown, or
courthouse employee.

The slumlord and I have settled on a price, but my budget is too unstable
to shake his hand on the deal.

This is a unique opportunity to visit a part of Texas few people would dare
enter.   It is the most dangerous place I have ever visited in my entire
life.  However, it will be much safer, if I can prevent more hoodrats from
moving in next to me.

The caving club in Houston held its first 2011 meeting Tuesday night.
   There were at least 16 cavers
there, and 4 newbies who appeared excited.

There seemed to be excitement in the air.

Elections were held in record time, in under 60 seconds, I think.
Congratulations to
the new officers, and on behalf of the other cavers, I would like to
say thank you to George-Paul
Richmann for his dedicated service to caving, and to the caving club.

The new president, Clint Ladd, started going over all the upcoming
spring activities and there were
so many that we didn't get to mention them all.( He had it all
printed out on a paper agenda, that
was quite professional looking. )

Ronnie Harrison reported that he went to Roppel Cave several times
last year, and was planning to go
again this spring.He estimated that there is 20 miles of cave
passages waiting to be discovered
in that system alone.

Lyndon Tui reported on visiting the sump at Cascade Caverns, and some
other trips he took in the fall.

Wayne Hutchinson reported on going to see petroglyphs at a rock
shelter out in the vicinity of DP Preserve.

The main event of the meeting then took place, which involved
discussion of caving packs and cave gear.
About 6 experienced cavers brought their cave packs and a game was set up.

I had to leave early, so I will let someone else fill in the rest, or
anything I left out about the meeting.

( For example, I believe several members met beforehand for a
Mongolian style dinner ).

I am guessing that Don  Syd Formanek have broken the record for most
GHG meetings attended, which
is probably in the 400 range. Jim McLane was there too, and he has
probably been to just as many
meetings.

I have always felt that the Houston area has great potential to have
an influential grotto; and at this meeting,
I saw positive signs of that.(  I can think of 15 cavers in
Houston that go caving occasionally or
show up and actively participate in TCR and they were not there, so
had they shown up, the meeting
could have been even more exciting than it was. )
