Re: [Trisquel-users] Libreboot 20160818
I upgraded to the newest libreboot release and this really improves the performance of 3D applications such as Blender.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Libreboot 20160818
New version! "The latest stable release is 20160902, released on 2016-09-02" https://libreboot.org/download/
Re: [Trisquel-users] Libreboot 20160818
> So would following the instructions on the libreboot website and not just going with the built-in MAC address. :) Hehe, sure, but I was more thinking of the situation where one already made the mistake of flashing it with the built in one. Jxself santo subito :P
Re: [Trisquel-users] Libreboot 20160818
"I was just providing a link to macchanger, that would have prevented what you described previously" So would following the instructions on the libreboot website and not just going with the built-in MAC address. :)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Libreboot 20160818
> A website you are accessing on the internet (like, say, fsf.org) has no access to your MAC address. The place you're connecting to from would be able to know it so a better way to say it might be that "Since it is a unique identifier, network access points can track you from one the other." This is the case as long as you're connected to the access point, regardless of whether or not you are actually making use of the internet. But anyway, you seem to be missing my point. That's correct. You only have to concern yourself with your MAC address if you do not wish the local network administrator to be able to identify you. MAC addresses do not cross router boundaries, so anything outside of your LAN will never see it. I was just providing a link to macchanger, that would have prevented what you described previously: "Two libreboot people doing that meet up, use the same network, and get their network interfaces shutdown because duplicate MAC addresses were found on the network."
Re: [Trisquel-users] Libreboot 20160818
Yes. The problem is, that, if you want more powerful CPUs, you must to buy one with microcode. Only alternatives are ARM, Core2Duo-Quad.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Libreboot 20160818
Microcode isn't a malware function that can only be removed by Intel. It is a function of the chip - how hardware instructions communicate with raw silicon. Even if they released source code you probably couldn't change it. It could be malicious but you're best getting a chip designed without it.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Libreboot 20160818
They're fine for heavy usage every day. People use Libreboot systems for servers and other uses. I think at this point we are focusing on numbers rather than real-world performance.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Libreboot 20160818
No, CPUs with more IPC are "i" series, and have microcode (backd00r, powerful rootkit) built-in, no one can remove it, only Intel.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Libreboot 20160818
Well, that sucks because I feel the IPC from Core2 and pre-Zen Chips are like the new Pentium 4, they're trash. Though, I think the dual opterons can still be usable depending on how multithreaded your workload is and can afford the electricity, but there's stuff to look forward to like free IP Cores where you can have FPGA accelerated GEGL or MLT or free CPU designs like the free implementation of SuperH.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Libreboot 20160818
That is all true. But you are best randomising it in software, as opposed to hardware. The default could still identify you on a network, if you are only one or two of people with such a MAC address (and if there are two of you, there is a fair chance that the network would crash, not expecting two different MAC addresses on the same network). So you are best to randomise it in the same way that TAILS does.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Libreboot 20160818
Read the FAQ. This is covered in great detail. https://libreboot.org/faq/
Re: [Trisquel-users] Libreboot 20160818
"Since it is a unique identifier, it can be used to track you while on the internet" This seems a little hyperbolical. I was responding to vita_cell's "I always flashed ROMs with default MAC address." This is a bad practice. Plain and simple. Even that website doesn't advocate for everyone to adopt the same MAC address. Because if everyone used the same MAC address no one could do anything. So don't use the default MAC address in libreboot, okay? Make up something random if you want in the name of privacy or security or whatever -- but that is beyond the scope of the point I was making.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Libreboot 20160818
Why don't you ask them on IRC?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Libreboot 20160818
On asus kfsn4-dre there is long delay before it boot. In coreboot there is no such bug still don`t understend why this is not fixed yet in libreboot.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Libreboot 20160818
How do you patch the rom ? Or should I build the rom from source with the MAC address changed ?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Libreboot 20160818
Will Libreboot ever support a board that supports a CPU with more IPC than a Core 2 Duo/Pre-Zen AMD?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Libreboot 20160818
that explains why you didn't get two hours. :) anyways though, thanks for giving me that information.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Libreboot 20160818
... I Read it Thanks ## Utilities archives is now source only. You will need to compile the packages in there (build scripts included, and a script for installing build dependencies in Trisquel 7). (binary utility archives are planned again in the next release, when the new build system is merged) ##
Re: [Trisquel-users] Libreboot 20160818
Yea I noticed the time difference between our posts, meh... Regardless I don't know when they actually uploaded it. so idk
Re: [Trisquel-users] Libreboot 20160818
Here is what I did with some help from the libreboot chatroom: IF you download the libreboot_r20160818_util tar, extract it, and go inside the folder, then go to flashrom directory with the terminal emulator... then type make or sudo make or w/e and then everything should go extremely smoothly as per the instructions. This method worked for me.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Libreboot 20160818
You need to compile the libreboot_util binaries from source for this release, or just use the old binaries from last release. This worked for me.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Libreboot 20160818
They added it after I wrote such commenting.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Libreboot 20160818
Can you give details of your GuixSD machine? Are you using it as the sole OS? Thanks.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Libreboot 20160818
I can't update, flashrom binary not present... ?? sudo ./flash update ~/libreboot_r20160818_grub_x200_8mb/x200_8mb_esqwerty_vesafb.rom ## Mode selected: update flashrom binary not present ##
Re: [Trisquel-users] Libreboot 20160818
This is not a good idea people. Two libreboot people doing that meet up, use the same network, and get their network interfaces shutdown because duplicate MAC addresses were found on the network. Think it's not likely? Imagine the FSF's yearly Libreplanet conference just as an example. Or someone stockpiling computers and flashing them all. You should really use the MAC address that came with your computer.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Libreboot 20160818
Actually one mirror has it. I just upgraded my system with it so... try the first main mirror. That should yield the results you seek.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Libreboot 20160818
None of the mirrors have it yet. :-(
Re: [Trisquel-users] Libreboot 20160818
Indeed, you have to patch each ROM, as the ./flash script erases the flash chip. The generic ROM you download from the website has a flash write descriptor with default MAC address.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Libreboot 20160818
Heh, I just flashed the last beta today! What good luck.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Libreboot 20160818
I mean this: https://libreboot.org/docs/install/index.html#flashrom https://libreboot.org/docs/hcl/gm45_remove_me.html#ich9gen
Re: [Trisquel-users] Libreboot 20160818
This sounds great! I can't wait to flash it on my GuixSD machine! Congrats to the Libreboot team! :-D
Re: [Trisquel-users] Libreboot 20160818
I always flashed ROMs with default MAC address.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Libreboot 20160818
It will be necessary to prepare the ROM with the own MAC address or just use the flash script to update the BIOS? Anyway these news sounds very good for me: 256MiB VRAM allocated on GM45 (X200, T400, T500, R400) instead of 32MiB. This is an improvement over both Lenovo BIOS and Libreboot 20150518, allowing video decoding at 1080p to be smoother. (thanks Arthur Heymans) To clarify, GM45 video performance in libreboot 20160818 is better than on the original BIOS and the previous libreboot release. Massively improved GRUB configuration, making it easier to boot more encrypted systems automatically, and generally a more useful menu for booting the system (thanks go to Klemens Nanni of the autoboot project). Libreboot now uses the grub.cfg provided by the installed GNU/Linux distribution automatically, if present, switching to that configuration. This is done across many partitions, where libreboot actively searches for a configuration file (also on LVM volumes and encrypted volumes). This should make libreboot more easy to use for non-technical users, without having to modify the GRUB configuration used in libreboot.
[Trisquel-users] Libreboot 20160818
A new stable version of Libreboot has been released today! https://libreboot.org/download/ Although none of the mirrors seem to have it yet.
