Email is a dangerous medium...

I don't think the remarks were intended to offend ( I certainly didn't
intend to be offensive, and I apologise if my reply had that effect.)

The protocols are not written in stone, and most people will not be upset
by html mail etc. A few might have problems with it - for instance quite
a few Linux users use mail clients that are "text only", by choice.
( mutt, alpine etc.)

For example, it's quite common for some people to use email
on Linux remotely from, say, an ssh log-in to a server or shell account,
without graphics ( "secure telnet", sort of). That probably seems odd from
your perspective, but it is true, strange as it may sound :-)

I'm not too sure what happened above. Essentially, it is preferred if you do
not send email in HTML form since many people prefer to use email clients
that are unable to display it - meaning that one has to wade through the
HTML to read your message. In the Windows world, most email clients are
Outlook (Express) / Thunderbird and a couple of others that can all read
HTML, so this is less of an issue. (Purists will also argue that HTML does
not belong in email from a philosophical point of view ;)). Maybe someone
just took what you said in the wrong way?

The other point raised was that Comic Sans MS is a Microsoft font - hence
many people on this list won't be able to see it anyway. Comic Sans MS is
available on Ubuntu, but not installed by default.

I, personally, think your email manners are fine :).

With regards to your original question, could it be that the people whose
email opens as an attachment are those with an attached signature? Usually
this is seen as an attachment with the filename signature.asc. It is also
possible (but unlikely, I would think) that outlook express doesn't
recognise the character encoding of these emails. Were these problems fixed
in Thunderbird?

For your thunderbird question, did you set the text option via the HTML
section of settings in the Composition tab? Not having a windows version
handy I can't describe the exact method of getting there, but I think thats
where it's set.

Cheers,

Matt

It's generally considered bad form to send html mail to mailing lists :-)
Also, most of use won't even see the font you are setting, since our email
clients are not configured to do so. I certainly don't see the font. All
my mail is seen in the font I have configured, which is legible and just
fine as far as I am concerned...

Email is text. I think perhaps the best strategy is to simply send all
your mail as plain text. That way, everyone can read it, and you won't get
complaints from people who dislike receiving html email etc.

There are two tabs in Preferences for fonts. "Display" (for how you want
incoming fonts to appear) and "Composition" (fonts to use in outgoing
messages). Make sure you're using setting the Composition fonts only.

By the way, the Comic Sans font is only installed by default on Windows,
so in general only Windows users will see your choice of font.

The larger 10" version may not be that much larger in dimensions than the
7" version if they move the speakers and make better use of the
potentially available screen space.

Interestingly ASUS already have a 11" notebook in their product range
although way more pricey.

4GB of flash disk space is just too small. I'll wait for the 10" version
that should have at least double the disk space, even if it costs a couple
hundred dollars more it'll be worth it.

Are there any specs released on the new 10" version?

I look at it like this - for $50-100 LESS than the cost of the Nokia
N800 (not to mention most PDAs), you get a fully fledged computer.

Remember, despite its appearance, the eeePC is NOT a notebook - it's a
new type of device that sits between PDAs/tablets and laptops/notebooks.
It's therefore more useful to evaluate it against other smaller devices
than the bulkier, 'full featured' ones further up the price scale.

I was disappointed with the lack of features on internet tablets, and I
always found laptops too big, usually requiring an extra bag to carry
around. The eeePC addresses both of those problems exceptionally well
IMHO.

Why compare apples to oranges?

The EeePC is great for what it is. No-one has claimed that it is a
substitute for a main laptop or desktop.

The advantage of its small size is that it is light, readily portable,
easily fits into a ladies handbag, is about the same size as a Harry Potter
book and introduces its owners to Linux.

As to pricing, it is cheap enough but looks even cheaper in American
dollars.

I think the RRP is $499. I guess it’s up to the retailer you purchase from

I checked them out at Officeworks last week and they were $499 at that time.

Nice app by the looks of things. I managed to get it working ok but was
having trouble with converting video. I did a little searching and came up
with this post at ubuntuforums:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=567695 which lead to
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=114946.

I followed the '*With x264' *method of installing ffmpeg properly and didn't
encounter any errors getting it installed. However, after retrying encoding
with Floola it seemed to try and do it but just ended up maxing out my cpu
and not really achieving much. I tested with a short 20 min divx avi and
left it go for upwards of an hour (encodes on windows usually take around
8-10 mins for the same sized file) before I decided it wasn't working and
killed it.

Interestingly when I try and manually encode with ffmpeg following the
suggestions in the above threads I get an error about codec aac not being
available though I do seem to have everything needed installed.

It was late when I tried it so I'll have another go when have time this
evening. Why must this be such a chore? :/

Tony speaking for much bad experience with D-link routers i may just
have the solution. For some odd reason D-links dislike *nix (anything
of than MS). The common problem i found is they do not pass on DNS
information. The quick solution is to set a static IP for your machine
and use your ISP specified DNS servers in the network setup. Its
anoying in the extreme but its a problem ive run into helping others
many times and the only way around it seems to be buying anything other

I haven't used the exact model you are speaking of but i have a Pixma
sitting in my garage due to the issues i had with it. I went out and
brought a HP in the end and its works out of the box. Sorry to say it
but the cannon drivers are absolute rubbish. I got mine working but it
took over 5 minutes to print each page on minimum quality so its wasn't
any use.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but unless things have changed
dramatically in the last year your in for an uphill battle sadly. Doom
and gloom aside their are third party drivers out there for some Cannons
that do work well so its just luck if yours will be usable.
Good Luck

A 10 inch version has been announced by Asus. I would assume that being
larger, it can hold a bigger battery.

Greetings,

I just want to plea to those who are attending the SLUG q&a tomorrow
night... Please Behave.

Yes, Microsoft do some petty and counterproductive things, but this does
not mean that our wonderful community has to. You don't do us any
justice by being petty back.

Now, I'm usually not one for promoting my own blog posts, but rather
than rewrite my opinion on the matter of slinging insults at Microsoft,
please read a post I made last week - it's a rant at the behaviour some
people displayed in the questions thread:

Hi Fellow Ubuntuans,

After checking for the existance of a driver for above printer (linux
driver), I finally got my printer installed.

It works well in WinXp. But in Dapper no go. When I give the printer
something print in dapper, it will spool a sheet
paper through, but without printing anything.

The driver I got from Canon does not work:
cnijfilter-mp520series-2.80-1.i386.deb

Gdebi says there either a fault in the driver or I need some permission.
(where do you get it ?)

Can anyone enlighten me with this problem. please ?

Hi Tony,

We need more specific information to be able to help you. What is the
exact text of the error you are receving?
I had a peek at the Cannon page for the drivers, there is 2 packages you
should download and install:
[1] cnijfilter-common_2.80-1_i386.deb
[2] cnijfilter-mp520series_2.80-1_i386.deb
Did you install both packages with no problems?

Cheers

Re: eeePC

2008-01-24 Thread Les Gray
Hi,

The eeePC screen res is 800x480, on a 7" screen. It's small, but that's
the nature of this device - a portable computer that's even more
portable than a laptop.

Not long ago I heard a rumour (can't remember where) that there was
going to be a model with a 10" screen, but that the idea was scrapped
due to the extra power requirements which would reduce the battery life
to an unacceptably low level.

But I find the 7" screen to be quite usable, although you need to
remember your keyboard shortcuts to maximise screen real estate eg. F11
in Firefox.

My uni-related use will mainly be for web access, reading .pdfs in class
and checking over assignments. I might use the eeePC as a 'notebook' but
I'm likely to just stick with good old pen and paper for that because
I'm such a crappy typist :)

I've just got eeeXubuntu installed on my machine and it's working great.
I've got / on the SSD with /home and 550MB swap (for hibernation) on a
4GB SDHC card for some extra space. There's a great deal of
configuration tips over at www.eeeuser.com if you didn't know already.

Hi Andrew

The eeePC has a very small screen, it is fine for doing things on the
run or for short periods in the library or whatever, but can be too
small if you need lots of screen real estate. One of the handy features
is the monitor out socket .. this last week I have been away from home
and had my eeePC hooked up to a CRT monitor at the house I am staying
in. It is comfortably running at 1024x768 on the big(ger) screen.

Cheers
