Hi all,
have checked out router HarbourIT satellite sells, it's a Netgear
WGR614, has anyone had any experience with
this router.
Have asked the questions, and have all good answers from HarbourIT, but
they are asking $185 for it pre-configured,
I can buy the same router from Harvey Norman for $89, so sounds like a
very expensive "pre-configuring", as I am on a pension.
I think I should learn to do it for myself, will get no help from "Help
Desk", no support for Linux, and I live
in a very small town North of Adelaide, so must be able to help myself,
have 2 other locals in the process of being "converted" to Ubuntu, but
it's me helping them (with Windows too), (blind leading the even more
blind) so as I said I should be able to help myself if the need arises.
HarbourIT looks like doing a lot of business in this town, only
alternative to satellite is Telstra NextG wireless which is expensive,
so someone in the town with a little knowledge could be useful :-)

If anyone has any experience with this router I would be most
appreciative. Have the manual for it and it looks like it shouldn't be
beyond me, and I could certainly use the $100 saving.
Many thanks in advance.

Thanks Callan,
they have already told me the usual, don't support Linux, so will need
to know a bit myself. what features should I be looking for, I won't be
using the wireless feature? Can't remember the last time I actually
used an ISP help desk, for that reason. May get router warranty
honoured, but that's about all, but that doesn't bother me, only has to
last around 20 years :-) Most even back away if Firefox is used.

Router query

2009-04-07 Thread squareyes
Hi all,
am in the process of changing to satellite broadband (from years of dial
up) with HarbourIT, and have been told by them
that I can purchase wireless/wired router with 4 access ports for $180.
This router comes pre-configured.

I can buy a straight wired router for $90, (no wireless card in my main
machine, and would like to plug in my laptop into same router) so I
would like to know what is involved in configuring it myself. Am on a
pension and would rather not spend the funds if I can get one for $90,
and have the extra knowledge as a bonus :-)

Are there any pitfalls I may encounter, am running 8.04 at the moment,
but will upgrade when I have broadband access.

Many thanks in advance.

Optical Drive doesn't work with Ubuntu. With Vista installed, when hard

optical drive ceases to exist.

Hi Dean,
If you are using Dial up, and have an External Serial modem, if you
have an external usb modem it must be
ACM compatible, or it may be a Winmodem, you will need the drivers for
Linux.

open a terminal "Applications menu" > "Accessories" > "Terminal

Type sudo pppconfig . press enter and type in your password
Fill in your details. Do not put anything in "Provider" slot

When finished Click on "Write files" and then Quit this utility.

Open a Terminal and type pon to connectpoff to disconnect

Hope this helps.

usb dial up modem query

2008-11-04 Thread squareyes
Hi,
have been trying to acquire a usb external dial up modem,
but have been unable to get a zoom mini, or US Robotics USR 5637,
they have to be shipped from US or UK and they don't seem to want to
ship outside
respective countries. Does anyone know of anywhere in Australia I could
get one.

Has anyone had any experience with Radicom USB Dongle Modem - V92HU-E2 ?
or have any other suggestions. I am after a modem that I can just plug
in and setup on various
laptops(other peoples machines), without having to play with installing
drivers etc.

Many thanks in advance.

Telstra Probs

2008-07-15 Thread squareyes
Hi all,
am having problems with my dial up, 40 or so disconnects since January,
bloating my phone bill.
Have minicom installed could anyone let me know how I could use this to
do yet another molds test.
Telstra doesn't support Linux, so it looks like I will have to talk
Technician through it, and would be nice to know how to do it :-) The
Telstra faults people are very airy fairy, answer usually is "well
don't know what can be done about this, ring faults whenever disconnect
occurs", thereby getting 2 more local calls added to my phone bill.

Many thanks in advance

I haven't run across any Internet service providers that won't allow you

are using Ubuntu Linux, you may have problems with internal modems though.

Many thanks Paul,
Here we don't get reminded of the past, we in Telstra's infinite wisdom
still live in it. Surprised they still don't use uni and bi-selectors in
the local exchange :-)
Am trying to convince Telstra to stop ripping me off, had 33 drop outs
since 26 Jan and would
really like some of my money back. They did a Molds test today using
their laptop, which showed as being fine, which it is most of the time,
but they won't do anything until they actually use my machine.
Have tried 2 different modems (external) on 2 different machines with
the drop outs still occurring.
Still waiting for the Government's promise of broadband for all, but
have been through HBIS and other programmes, all came to nothing, still
only dialup access and am not holding my breath that things will
change.. Can get access with Telstra's next G system, but is very expensive,
Where I live standard mobile phones don't work, only cdma and next G
phones are any good.

I have friends who have Ubuntu running on machines with no Internet access,

Are there any problems that may rear their ugly heads.

Hi Todd,
I have an Asus M2NPN-VM mother board with Athlon 64X2 dual core,
MSI NX7300 GT-TD256E 256 MB DDR2 TV-out DVI HDTV Video Card. All just
worked, no problems,
all worked fine. Only problem had to install a Pci serial card as no
serial port on mother board.

Mother Board cost A$169
Athlon 64X2 dual core A$205
MSI NX7300 GT-TD256E 256 MB A$153 May be cheaper ways to go though.
Hope this helps
