Thank you both Andre & Scott, Well, the plugin certainly fixed the print quality. Resolution and printable area. But the on/off syndrome remains with me. For the present I have to remember to make sure the P1005 in turned on before I boot up or I get the "may not be connected" error message. In Windows if I turn on the printer after sending a job, I have to go into Printer Control and refresh the print job to get it working. So it's not problem free. But for the price $95 with cartridge it prints fast and well in both systems. So I still need a solution to wake up the connection in situ - eventually. For general information, regarding the HP 1005 and the HP P1005 - both printers require the plugin. See list here: http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/plugin.html While HPLIP is open source, the plugins are proprietary and not included in HPLIP. (except in Jaunty requires dontzap to be installed to re-enable) I'm not 100% familiar with the model printer that you have, but I'm assuming its a entry level laser-jet. Thanks Scott, I believe I am using the latest HPLIP version -3.9.4b. I just Googled "wake up printer . . ." There is a lot of chatter. Most of which I don't really understand. But it does seem to be a common problem. Is there, maybe, a simple command I can send via Terminal? I've tried CTRL +ALT+Backspace that doesn't work. As a guess, what version of HPLIP are you using? it may be that you need to update it to a newer version as there could be something specific that needs to be sent to the printer to wake it up (not sure) But I have a all in one unit here HP-4400 and this looses the plot! if not printed or used as a scanner, to resolve this, it just needs the power to be cycled.
