[Bug 923552] Re: no way to create logical volume within lvm

2012-03-07 Thread Colin Watson
Hm, that's not what your most recent partman log indicates. I couldn't
reproduce this in an alternate amd64 installation with a blank disk.

Since you can reproduce this in a VM, though, it should be a matter of
sufficiently exact instructions, so ... Could I have exact directions
on how you're starting qemu, including the qemu-img command that creates
the disk, and the full qemu command line?

Is there a work-around available? I'm setting up a new system, and
REALLY wanted to start with 12.04, even though it's still in Beta. I've
got a partition on the disk I want to save, which is why I selected

[Bug 705007] Re: Unity has no method to maintain properties of launchers

2012-03-07 Thread John Lea
The unity-launcher-editor application was designed for exactly this
purpose. I have opened bug #894772 requesting that this functionality
is incorporated into Ubuntu Tweak. Ken VanDine was also looking into
getting unity-launcher-editor into universe, but I think this stalled
because the original developers were not responsive??

I am attaching this bug to the unity-launcher-editor project, and
removing it from Unity.

[Bug 930148] Re: Dodge windows is down but what about making the launcher autohide only on maximised apps ?

2012-03-07 Thread Aleve Sicofante
I want to apologize for the name calling. No matter what I think about
MS, I shouldn't have called him ignorant and arrogant. It just
infuriated me that he came here to joke and tease.

Since he stated this is settled, I suggest we stop arguing about the
decision and follow the open source path (the design team's logic has
been proven flawed already and we should not expect an illogical
decision to be reconsidered by logical argumentation): bring it back
ourselves and ignore the official position. I wouldn't be surprised if
the feature was brought back officially in future releases. Since logic
is out of the equation, decisions in Ubuntu are easily taken and easily
reverted. (That's exactly why I have a hard time deploying Ubuntu in
professional environments, btw. Unpredictability is probably the number
one feature of Ubuntu these days.)

@f_padia: Apple and Microsoft dictate. I don't know if they listen or
not, but they definitely dictate without any public discussion between
design leaders and users. I've never seen Jobs, Gates or Balmer chatting
with their users. I was hoping Ubuntu would be different from that.
Maybe I'm just wrong.

@Ego: great initiative. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I believe most
of us just want a clean maximized window environment and will live
happily with the slight inconsistencies your approach might bring (where
non-maximized windows are allowed to go, etc.). You have proven it can
be done easily (so much for hard to maintain code). More experienced
developers might follow and implement this at a lower level, then
provide a PPA. My fingers are crossed. Did I say thank you?

[Bug 619395] Re: kmail: text mails should be displayed with a monospace font by default

2012-03-07 Thread Maarten Bezemer
Oh you want to have the mono-space font as a default setting. Sorry, I
misread/misunderstood.

Personally, I am against as I think using the system font better integrates
with the rest of the OS (and I do not encounter any/much emails that used
spaces to format).
Generally, I am afraid you request is going to be denied, although I do not
know the policies on how requests are getting voted on or something similar...

You could try create an upstream report by following the instructions at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Upstream/KDE maybe the KMail developers can
help you further. If you have done so, please tell us the number of the
upstream bug (or the link), so we can add a bugwatch that will inform us
about its status. Thanks in advance.

yeah.

I spoke into corruption in the diagonal, and this happens whenever you
open a folder.

But the screenshot can also see some corruptions in the vertical. These
also tend to occur when taking the screenshots and see flash video in

I've tried your option right now. It does what you say, but not exactly

in the calendar, even though English still remains everywhere else
 throughout the system.

That's a bug in the calendar app IMO. It's fully possible to make use of
the locale in a more sensible way.

Look at Android. They finally got to their senses and added a nice
little option in the Calendar Settings for Week starts on: with the
options: Locale default (!!), Saturday, Sunday, Monday.

Personally I like that approach. It relies on the LC_TIME locale by
default, which I think is important for those of us who don't want to
redo the same kind of setting in multiple places. At the same time you
can set it explicitly if you like.

There is another bug on this topic, so I mark this report as duplicate.

[Bug 930148] Re: Dodge windows is down but what about making the launcher autohide only on maximised apps ?

2012-03-07 Thread Aleve Sicofante
1.) I don't think launcher should Dodge to Windows that are not
maximized. It should act exactly the same as never hide mode does and
only be hidden when one or more window(s) are maximized. There is
nothing hard to understand here for the user it does exactly what it is
supposed to to if it does this reliably?

Totally agreed. This is just what intellihide means.

2.) Desktop icons should not jump to the edge. They should stay exactly
in the same position from never hide mode.

Again, I completely agree.

3.) This one is a bit tricky. What should happen to the windows on the
desktop. Should they be moved around on triggering hide/show and should
they be positioned inside launcher area when launcher is hidden and
aero snap is used?

I think implementing sophistication in a script is a bit too ambitious.
Sure, ideally the launcher should intellihide when you tile your windows
to cover the whole screen, and maybe some other cases, but this
introduces a complexity that is beyond the basic need: just hide the
launcher when at least one window is maximized, so you can concentrate
on the work at hand a make use of the most screen real estate,
especially on netbooks.

[Bug 848154] Re: ARM version not supporting V6 RaspPi

2012-03-07 Thread rec9140
if raspberry (or anyone else) would reliably commit to invest into the
above resources (buildds, a few fulltime people etc) to cover the costs
for such a port (and for its ongoing maintenance) i dont think this
would be refused though. canonical whatsoever will very likely go on to
cover only v7 and beyond

This position is not the position to take. Builds should be about
supporting the widest used products on the market. There has to be a
better way to build the ARM version that can support RPi, OMAP, and the
other ARM boards like these on the market. This NO NO NO NO, ARM V7 only
attitude is not productive.

There have not been 100K Beagleboards, Pandaboards or any other OMAP
boards sold in total since their development. The 100K+ in a DAY for the
RPi. Thats by conservative estimates. Its probably closer to 200-250K.

Its not a matter of whether YOU would use it for a desktop... There are
PLENTY who would IF it was available and this could benefit Canoncial
AND Linux AND Raspberry PI. I wouldn't use it for a desktop for me, but
it does fit in to a project very nicely. Its about ease of use and
showing how polished not only the RPi is, but Linux and specifically the
*buntu(s).

How much easier is it to get software on *bunutu(s) versus Debian? For
some its as simple as opening synaptic and picking, or maybe adding a
PPA and then adding the software. On Debian your going to run users
straight in to the compile wall. Not what you want to do for most users.

Its really truly sad to see that this is going to slip through
canoncials hand.

Why the build change after Karmic? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? If the build process
had remained the same this would not be an issue, download the image and
go...So what was the reason for changing after the Karmic release to
this V7+ uber alles policy? ?

As for a V7 RPi, doubtful. They have secured special availability of the
SoC they chose, and would have to redesign the board for any change in
the SoC and at this point thats not likely to happen. Unless there is a
pin for pin replacement for the current SoC with V7 support. Possible,
but unlikely.

[Bug 948938] Re: Mouse input (warp and clipping) broken in Wine 1.4rc6

This a test program by Henri Verbeet.
According to its author :
It prints the mouse coordinates to the terminal,
you mostly care about delta for this bug. Press 'C' to enable / disable
clipping, press 'W' to warp the mouse. Note that this doesn't necessarily
behave the same as those games, but it should be enough for basic testing of
relative mouse events.

[Bug 948954] [NEW] Black Screen With Xorg fglrx

2012-03-07 Thread Toni Lähdekorpi
Public bug reported:

I've got a iMac with ATI Radeon HD 4670 running Ubuntu 12.04 (also tried 11.10,
same results).
Opensource driver works relatively well, except that Unity 3D is almost
completely unusable and buggy.

Tried both, the installer from AMD and fglrx from jockey, the behavior is the
same.
I installed the latest Catalyst driver, rebooted and got a black screen.
Trying to switch to a TTY console after trying to start Xorg doesn't work.
I need a reboot each time to test.

From xorg.log:
[ 245.672] (EE) fglrx(0): Output LVDS enabled but has no modes
[ 245.672] (EE) fglrx(0): Display Infrastructure Failed

2012-03-07 Thread Loris Zinsou
Here is a video showing mouse par int the first part (that places my cursor to
an arbitrary position, then does nothing, no warp).
In the second part, I start clipping, but the clipping zone does not fit in the

[Bug 763680] Re: Dash appears under full screen apps

2012-03-07 Thread Trent Tschirgi
White Screens update

Actually, my white screens problem is not completely gone;

There is no white screen problem for at least several hours after
logging in.

At some point, an application running in a full-screen window will go
white-screen, but the header of its window is still visible.
Hovering the cursor in certain sections of the white screen will bring up
comment windows.
Objects are still in the white screens, and they are functional. I just can't
see them.
I can grab the header and drag it downward to make it contract into a smaller
window.
Almost always, making a smaller window causes the content to become visible
again.
Enlarging the application to full screen causes the white screen to return.

Screensaver Does Not Work

Idling the terminal results in a white screen with no borders or features.
With the default installation of 11.04, It was necessary to power off and power
on to restore the system.

After I unchecked 'Lock screen when screensaver is active,'
the white screen goes away with a mouse jiggle or any keyboard activity.

This seems to indicate that the screensaver does not work on my
installation.

Re: [Bug 948461] Re: apt-get hashsum/size mismatch due caused by swapped local file names

On Wed, 7 Mar 2012, Ben Howard wrote:

 Scott,

I can confirm that -o=Acquire::http::Pipeline-Depth=0 appears to fix
the problem. We'll need to look at putting that configuration option
 into the cloud-images.

Well thats not really a complete fix though.
 * existing images do not have that setting in them, and they will have to
'apt-get update apt-get upgrade' to *get* that setting (whch can
   fail).
 * other images out there would not have this setting, and would just
start to fail when we switch DNS records to S3 mirrors.
 * other people building images would need to know they need to do this.
(this could be alleviated by it being a file laid down by a common
package like cloud-init, but even then, we'd have to SRU the fix
   to old releases.)

I'm really not sure what to do. We dont want EC2 laden with gotchas
that only work if you use our special images. While I certainly want our
images to work, I don't want to just make like for difficult for others
who are not using them.

[Bug 939735] Re: PDF file is damanged - attempting to reconstruct xref table

2012-03-07 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package cups-filters - 1.0.4-1

---
cups-filters (1.0.4-1) unstable; urgency=low

  [ Till Kamppeter ]
  * New upstream release
- cups-filters 1.0.4 release
- texttopdf: Fall back to altermative fonts via fontconfig if the
FreeMono TrueType fonts are not installed (Closes: #495598,
  Closes: #662660).
- bannertopdf: Fix off-by-one error in page duplication
- bannertopdf: Put indirect references to streams into the page's
  contents
- bannertopdf: Let byte offsets for the Xref table of the PDF output
being determined correctly also when the output goes to stdout
  (LP: #939735).
- bannertopdf: Output multiple copies of the test page if duplex
and/or N-up is chosen, to let the test page appear on all possible
positions of the sheet (LP: #939530).
- bannertopdf: Scale test page template to fit the job's page size,
get and display full page geometry information, draw the frame which
marks the printable area 1pt smaller, to assure that it gets completely
  visible (LP: #921073).
  * debian/local/default-testpage.pdf: Added missing Q operator to the end of
the page. This broke N-up printing with pdftopdf (LP: #939530).
  * debian/control: Added explicit build dependency on libfontconfig1-dev.
(Closes: #661127)

[Bug 939530] Re: Test page is printed only once if duplex is selected

2012-03-07 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package cups-filters - 1.0.4-1

---
cups-filters (1.0.4-1) unstable; urgency=low

  [ Till Kamppeter ]
  * New upstream release
  * debian/control: Changed font dependency (for texttopdf) to ttf-freefont |
fonts-liberation | ttf-dejavu instead of only ttf-freefont

[Bug 533713] Re: Missing plugin: gstreamer|0.10|totem|Décodeur private/teletext|decoder-private/teletext (Décodeur private/teletext)

2012-03-07 Thread ramocio
This problem is still present in debian squeeze with gstreamer 0.10

** Message: Missing plugin: gstreamer|0.10|totem-plugin-viewer|decoder
application/x-mpegts-private-section|decoder-application/x-mpegts-
private-section (decoder application/x-mpegts-private-section)

I think it is related to teletext, as audio and video play ok after
cancelling.

I use vdr with vdr-live plugin, and this is quite annoying, I need to
press Cancel button everytime I open a TV channel, as video stops
playing (you get a paused frame) until you Cancel or try to download the
plugin with package manager unsuccessfully.

I think a good solution would be to change the code in gstreamer plugin
to ignore this (teletext?) data.

The oneiric kernel packages in pre-proposed ppa are still building
against the 3.0.22 upstream kernel.

Any reason why there is no tracking bug and/or oneiric build for 3.0.23,
released upstream last week?

[Bug 948972] [NEW] compiz segfaults when mounting/unmounting a loopback device quickly

2012-03-07 Thread Colin King
Public bug reported:

compiz segfaults when quickly mounting/unmonting a loopback filesystem

[ 4855.938753] compiz[6801]: segfault at 18 ip 7f4360b470d0 sp
7fff03eed728 error 4 in libgdu.so.0.0.0[7f4360b2f000+37000]

Testcase: See attached bash script.

I hit this problem running a bunch of ecryptfs tests where I create and
mount/umount a loopback device multiple times a second.

Can reproduce this every time. Unfortunately compiz tries hard to
startup but eventually gets stuck and I a totally unusable desktop.

[Bug 948944] Re: after upgrade from oneiric python applications may use the wrong version of wxpython and fail as a result

2012-03-07 Thread Scott Kitterman
From a clean oneiric chroot:

# apt-get install python-wxgtk2.6 python-wxgtk2.8
...
# python
...
 import wx
 import sys
 print sys.modules
...'wx': module 'wx' from
'/usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/wx-2.8-gtk2-unicode/wx/__init__.pyc'...
Adjust /etc/apt/sources.list to precise and dist-upgrade.
...
# python
...
 import wx
 import sys
 print sys.modules
...'wx': module 'wx' from
'/usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/wx-2.6-gtk2-unicode/wx/__init__.pyc'...

Definitely a bug and not related to the fact that there's a PPA package
involved. I don't intend to work on fixing this, so fair game for
anyone that's interested.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make

look at all reported bugs in a timely manner. There have been many
changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem
may have been fixed with some of the updates. It would help us a lot if
you could test it on a currently supported Ubuntu version. When you test

[Bug 948848] Re: lucid to precise upgrade: libgnomedesktop2.20-cil failed to remove : Can't locate File/Basename.pm in @INC (@INC contains: /etc/perl /usr/local/lib/perl/5.10.1 /usr/local/share/perl/5

2012-03-07 Thread Martin Pitt
lucid's prerm does:

if [ $1 = remove ] || [ $1 = upgrade ]  [ -x
/usr/share/cli-common/gac-package-remove ]; then
/usr/share/cli-common/gac-package-remove libgnomedesktop2.20-cil
fi

This seems to crash when calling gac-package-remove, which I assume is a
Perl script. Seems lucid is missing a dependency there, or the
dependency has already been removed/is being upgraded.

This is hopefully fixable by doing a precise upload and handle the
failure in prerm $1 = failed-upgrade. (See http://www.debian.org/doc
/debian-policy/ch-maintainerscripts.html#s-unpackphase).

Chris, as you are most familiar with the Mono packages, can you please
have a look at this? Thanks!

This smells like a NULL pointer dereference issue -- we're passing a

[Bug 948978] [NEW] Brightness control keys stopped working after latest 12.04 post beta1 update

2012-03-07 Thread Alex
Public bug reported:

I'm using a new Toshiba Portege Z830.

Brightness control keys on my laptop (Fn+F6 and Fn+F7) are working when
booting the 12.04 beta1 ISO image. They still work after installing
beta1 without the updates on the hard drive.

However, after applying the latest updates from the network, the
brightness controls are not working anymore.

There is a correct keypress event (not sure if it's normal that it appears 4
times for each keypress though):
$ xev | sed -n 's/^.*state \([0-9].*\), keycode *\([0-9]\+\) *\(.*\),
.*$/keycode \2 = \3, state = \1/p'
keycode 232 = (keysym 0x1008ff03, XF86MonBrightnessDown), state = 0x10
keycode 232 = (keysym 0x1008ff03, XF86MonBrightnessDown), state = 0x10
keycode 232 = (keysym 0x1008ff03, XF86MonBrightnessDown), state = 0x10
keycode 232 = (keysym 0x1008ff03, XF86MonBrightnessDown), state = 0x10
keycode 233 = (keysym 0x1008ff02, XF86MonBrightnessUp), state = 0x10
keycode 233 = (keysym 0x1008ff02, XF86MonBrightnessUp), state = 0x10
keycode 233 = (keysym 0x1008ff02, XF86MonBrightnessUp), state = 0x10
keycode 233 = (keysym 0x1008ff02, XF86MonBrightnessUp), state = 0x10

And an ACPI event is generated:
$ sudo acpi_listen
video DD01 0087
video DD01 0086

However, there is no scancode generated in keymap:
$ sudo /lib/udev/findkeyboards
AT keyboard: input/event3
$ sudo /lib/udev/keymap -i input/event3
Press ESC to finish, or Control-C if this device is not your primary keyboard

Finally, the following line appears on each keypress in /var/log/kern.log:
Mar 7 21:01:53 portege kernel: [ 636.342659] ACPI: Failed to switch the
brightness

This is a regression between beta1 and the latest updates of 12.04
