[Bug 2060993] [NEW] Startup applications / gnome-session-properties does not persist between logins

2024-04-11 Thread David White
Public bug reported:

Having installed Guake I tried adding `/usr/bin/guake --hide` to Startup
Applications. However, it was not in the list of startup applications
when I next booted.

I tested logging off and logging on again and found it wasn't persisting
between logins.

Data I entered was:
Name: Guake
Command: /usr/bin/guake --hide
Comment: Guake terminal

I also tried just command=/usr/bin/guake

[Bug 2060575] Re: gnome-keyring fails to automatically unlock login keyring after recent updates in noble

2024-04-09 Thread David White
It seems that the usual password keyring called Login is not
automatically created in gnome-keyring. In fact there are no credentials
of any kind in there on logging in after a clean install.

If you change your password via the control panel, the login keyring is
then created.

However, when you reboot the Login keyring is not automatically
unlocked, as it should be. So, any items you have stored in there are
not accessible and you are asked for the password when a service needs
credentials from it.

[Bug 2060667] [NEW] No default keyring and does not unlock on login

2024-04-09 Thread David White
Public bug reported:

On a fresh install of Ubuntu 24.04 numbat, gnome-keyring does not seem
to be properly configured.

If I attempt to add an online account via settings > online accounts,
after authentication with the online account gnome-keyring prompts me to
create a default keyring because one does not exist yet, so I cancelled.

Opening gnome-keyring reveals there is no entry under Passwords when I
think there should be a "Login" password keyring that's automatically
unlocked on login.

Setting a new password via settings > system > users creates a new
Loging keyring. However, this keyring is not automatically unlocked on
login.

So, whenever I first use an app after login that uses a keyring, such as
connecting to Google drive via Nautilus, I'm prompted for the keyring
password.

[Bug 1876992] Re: X11 session crash on using Gimp or LibreOffice

2020-05-07 Thread David White
Reviewing bug 1868519, it certainly matches the situation. Mouse
movement is the trigger for the crash. For gimp it's moving the mouse
after opening or creating an image. For Libreoffice it's beginning to
use the crop tool, which is also a mouse movement.

Well. It's easy to cause the crash. Open Gimp, create a new image, move
mouse. I'll upload some more crash files.

On a Ubuntu session this then ends the session and it drops back to the
login screen. I tried on a classic Gnome desktop and it froze the
desktop resulting in requiring a forced reboot using the power key.

Thanks Daniel. I uninstalled xserver-xorg-video-intel and removed
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf, which sorted all the display
corruption issues.

It looks like there is a problem on the upgrade with leaving this old
driver knocking around - is this going to be sorted for others upgrading
going forwards?

Would you still like me to open a new bug report?

[Bug 1875645] [NEW] Graphics corruption on shell on login screen and session screen

2020-04-28 Thread David White
Public bug reported:

After upgrading from 19.10 to 20.04 I am seeing blocky green and purple
artefacts on icons, background images and text. This is visible on the
login screen and once logged in.

Only the "shell" is corrupted and any subsequent changes, such as
changing the background image, are displayed without corruption. The
corruption is random but it is predictable that it will appear on the
launcher icons, background image and shell menu icons and text.

I've tried swapping between available graphics drivers but it makes no
difference.

Text corruption in menus is on particular glyphs selected at random. In
the screen shots, for example, all upper-case and lower-case 'O's are
currupted but on a subsequent reboot the affected glyphs will vary. On
filing this bug I also notice that the pop-up modal password requests
also displayed the corrupted glyphs. No programms run subsequently will
display any problems.

A fix is also discussed here:

https://github.com/leenooks/phpLDAPadmin/issues/61

Can we expect a fixed version to be available soon on Ubuntu? I'd hate
to have to wait till 20.04!

[Bug 1829374] [NEW] On slow network connections, users authenticated by LDAP are not assigned to groups

2019-05-16 Thread David White
Public bug reported:

We have be struggling with intermittent problems with LDAP on users'
desktop Ubuntu PCs. When they log in, they are often not added to any
groups apart from their matching user group, e.g. "john" would only be
assigned to the "john" group but should also be in "adm". We enabled
logging in nslcd.conf and observed that user group data was being
received, it just wasn't being used.

We have separately discovered that those PCs were only connecting to the
local network at 100MBits due to a cable problem. This issue has been
resolved and now that the PCs connect at 1000MBits, the LDAP groups
problem has gone away.

I believe there is a race condition bug when user sessions are created.

When you get the "error" dialog that means something crashed, so...

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It sounds like some part of the system has crashed. To
help us find the cause of the crash please follow these steps:

1. Look in /var/crash for crash files and if found run:
ubuntu-bug YOURFILE.crash
Then tell us the ID of the newly-created bug.

2. If step 1 failed then look at https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/ID where
ID is the content of file /var/lib/whoopsie/whoopsie-id on the machine.
Do you find any links to recent problems on that page? If so then please
send the links to us.

3. If step 2 also failed then apply the workaround from bug 994921,
reboot, reproduce the crash, and retry step 1.

Please take care to avoid attaching .crash files to bugs as we are
unable to process them as file attachments. It would also be a security
risk for yourself.

[Bug 1772865] Re: Right physical button on touchpad does left click.

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1759300 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1759300

I found a solution. This works for Dell XPS 15 with touchpad with
physical click under the touchpad:

In Ubuntu Settings > Devices > Mouse and touchpad set "Tap to click" to
OFF

In Gnome tweaks > Keyboard & Mouse > Mouse click emulation choose
"Area".

I guess there's some interaction between touchpad touch location and the
physical switch.

Why are you asking me to follow links discussing track-pad button
emulation? My bug is about physical buttons. The right physical button
(microswitch under the trackpad) is mapped to left-click, the same as
the left physical button. I've turned touch-to-click off entirely.

I was following the instructions you left on the other ticket.

It definitely has physical buttons. The whole track-pad clicks down and
it has a separate left and right physical switches. This isn't the same
bug.

anyone have any idea how long this will take to trickle through to

[Bug 1346776] Re: SSL certificate creation crashes without subjectAltName

2016-02-17 Thread David White
I came across this with managing openvpn keys on ubuntu 15.10.

The pkitool in my CA folder was from an older version of ubuntu
(probably 14.04) so tried updating it to the latest that came with

I've added that it affects openvpn.

[Bug 1295445] Re: Cursor size is not updated on HiDPI at intermediate UI scale levels

2015-03-12 Thread David White
I've come across this or a similar bug in 14.10 which runs unity 7.3.1.
I'm on a DELL XPS 15 with a 240 dpi screen. This looks best with a
scaling factor of 2 or 2.5. The mouse in most applications (firefox,
terminal) is the proper size but on the desktop and in nautilus windows
it is very tiny.

Thank you, that worked! However, on reboot it's all back to how it was.
At least I know there's a workaround and don't have to carry on
searching through settings trying to get it to work.

[Bug 1336801] Re: 12.04 guest hangs on a 14.04 host server

2014-07-03 Thread David White
Hi Serge.

Update on this post. It seems that the problem is the display driver
choice in the VM settings.

The steps I took in installing were:

Click New VM button in virt-manager
Type in name and select local install media. Press Forward.
Select an ISO image. OS Type Linux. Version Ubuntu 12.04 (this is the template
I was referring to).

After much experimenting I managed to solve the problem by selecting VGA
video mode in the VM's settings. The default causing the problem was
Cirrus.

Now that I've got network set up on the VM I've just run the it with
Cirrus graphics and am seeing the same problems but I can ssh in. So, it
would appear that the console freezes rather than the whole VM freezing.

[Bug 1336801] [NEW] 12.04 guest hangs on a 14.04 host server

2014-07-02 Thread David White
Public bug reported:

A new 12.04.4 server guest installation hangs on a 14.04 server host
machine.

I did the following:

Created a new Virtual Machine with the Ubuntu 12.04 template using virt-manager
Ran through the installation without a hitch to install a LAMP+SSH server. All
standard options apart from that.
On reboot the 12.04 guest started but then hung after doing fsck step.
Trying different options (change disk driver, etc) made it progress a couple
more steps but still hung.

The thing that fixed it in the end was to switch to a VGA display
driver, away from the default.

[Bug 1247061] Re: ctrl+shift+alt+arrow can't move window up or down, only left and right

2014-01-28 Thread David White
Christopher,

In the end I found the keyboard shortcut options via the sytem settings
and found that the keyboard shortcuts for these actions had changed to
something else, which I can't remember now. I set them back to the
default.

If it would help I could run the CD image as a live USB stick on the
machine I had the problem on. Unfortunately I don't have a spare drive
to do an installation. Let me know if that would be helpful.

[Bug 1191105] Re: 13.04 Hangs When nfs Mounts Present In /etc/fstab

2013-10-31 Thread David White
I've run into this now on 13.10. I tried adding NEED_IDMAPD=no to
/etc/defaults/nfs-common but the only effect was that I could now
successfully skip mounting, it didn't cause the mount to succeed.

[Bug 859539] Re: usb-creator-gtk fails to install bootloader: System policy prevents installing the bootloader

2013-10-30 Thread David White
Affects me in 64-bit Saucy writing the desktop 64-bit distribution onto
a USB key (Lacie). Got progressively slower during writing process.
Eventually grinds to a halt on 99%, or similar, and crashes.

I've been plagued by this bug for years - it's pretty fundemental to
installing Ubuntu so would have thought it was worth someone spending
time on it.

[Bug 1208019] Re: Eclipse menus doesn't show up in Saucy

2013-10-29 Thread David White
Ahmed,
Just guessing at the problem but are you launching eclipse from the command
line? If you are launching as root from the command line the eclipse.desktop
file doesn't take effect. This file is only for launching from the dash.

To launch from the command line with this fix type in:
env UBUNTU_MENUPROXY= /opt/eclipse/eclipse

(remembering the space after the =).

Hope that helps

2013-09-26 Thread David White
My server code is now throwing null pointer exceptions due to an issue
in the same area (ICC colour profiles). I've been running test
successfully with the same photos all morning and now they won't load at
all. There has been no code change to the server. I'm guessing there's
an underlying library problem.

The crash actually occurs in ICC_Profile code. I get intermitent colour
issues with decoded JPEGs where the image is totally mid-green except
for areas that are dark which tend to black. Is there an issue in the
colour code for multi-threaded decode? I've done my best to create an
image reader in a thread-safe way.

I've attached the crash log file.

[Bug 1037285] Re: /boot fills up after many kernel upgrades

2013-09-05 Thread David White
This is definitely a security risk, and also a usability problem. If we
are updating kernels because of security fixes then surely a bug which
prevents an update is perpetuating the security risk.

Also, this makes managing ubuntu servers and desktops a headache.
Remember, Ubuntu is for humans and humans don't like headaches.

[Bug 1167622] Re: Cannot change EFI variables using efibootmgr (raring regression)

2013-05-28 Thread David White
I've tried both. http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~jsalisbury/lp1173423/ works
for me but http://people.canonical.com/~jsalisbury/lp1173423/ doesn't.

Doing an strace on efibootmgr in the current Ubuntu kernel (3.8.0.22) it
seems that the software isn't too savvy on errors. It ignores a device
full error when trying to create an addition boot entry (caused by the
notorious 50% fix) and fails later on trying to right boot order data.

[Bug 787772] Re: Major sound distortion, random

2013-04-23 Thread David White
I'm facing audio distortion problems on Raring 64 bit. On ubuntu login,
when Skype starts, skype login sound has major crackles in the sound.
This continues for all audio playback within skype thereafter.

Work around: Sound distortion problem goes away when pavucontrol is run
and the volume changed from their. Problem comes back again on next
ubuntu login.

[Bug 787772] Re: Major sound distortion, random

2013-04-23 Thread David White
Further update.

The crackly sound comes back after pavucontrol is quit. After
experimenting it seems that the distortion only goes away when
pavucontrol is running *and* has displayed the playback tab. Opening
pavucontrol in itself doesn't solve the problem, you have to click on
the playback tab. The normal system sound controls under the sound
notification icon do not make the problem go away.

[Bug 1158712] [NEW] Pulse audio startup failure

2013-03-22 Thread David White
Public bug reported:

In Raring ringtail. New install. Home directory mounted over NFS.

Audio icon on menu bar shows speaker icon with dashes. Clicking on icon
the menu only has volume control set to zero (can't change).,Rhythmbox
link and play controls, and Sound Settings link.

Would expect to have speaker icon with sound graphic, more options under
the menu and to be able to adjust sound settings (e.g. volume).

Reason seems to be that pulseaudio fails to start. In Syslog a series of
error reports a second or two apart reporting:

Mar 22 09:11:44 unbuntu-desktop pulseaudio[4095]: [pulseaudio] authkey.c:

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or
challenging to deal with as a .crash file. Please follow these
instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can
be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable
apport in /etc/default/apport and restart.

Now open your file manager, navigate to your /var/crash directory and open the
crash report you wish to submit.
If this fails you will have to open a terminal and file your report with
'ubuntu-bug /var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash' where _my_crash_report.crash is
the crash you would like to report. If you get an error that you aren't allowed
to access this report you will have to file it with 'sudo ubuntu-bug
/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash'.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more
efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

[Bug 773792] [NEW] mysql connector removed during libreoffice installation

2011-04-29 Thread David White
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libreoffice

I just upgraded to Ubuntu 11.04 and all went well except for the
replacement of open-office org base with libre office base. My database
previously created with OO base opens in Libreoffice, but when I try to
connect to a table that was linked to a mysql table, I got the message
that the driver failed load. I checked the director /usr/share/java and
realized the connector was not there (perhaps it was removed during the
upgrade), so I issued sudo apt-get install libmysql-java and it started
working again. I didn't even have to close libreoffice restart it.
Acknowledgement: Thanks to http://maxolasersquad.blogspot.com/2011/03

[Bug 773797] [NEW] status bar checkbox in view menu not selectable in a form

2011-04-29 Thread David White
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libreoffice

I have a form that I designed in OpenOffice.base and it connects to and
displays data from a mysql table. After upgrading to Ubuntu 11.04 during
which OO was replaced with LO, I can open the form and display the first
record but there are not navigation controls. I went to view menu and
tried to select the status bar (which contained the nav controls in OO
previously) but couldn't get to select the check box - its not
selectable. And reset in the view-tool bar menu doesn't work either.

[Bug 668929] [NEW] yahoo mail ok but exchange mail not showing body although sync several times

2010-10-30 Thread David White
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

I used to be able to read my yahoo and exchange mail in evolution and it
worked great for the a number of years, but as my mail files got larger
and larger it began to crawl ( 4g). I deleted a number of mails, and
some of the filters I had but with little improvement. Then a few days
ago I stopped receiving exchange altogether. I upgraded my os and

but not the message bodies.

[Bug 197290] Re: 2 gb max inbox

2010-07-26 Thread David White
Hi everyone.

It appears this is still a problem in 10.04. Over the weekend my
evolution stopped receiving email in my inbox, checked the directory and
found the file size was greater than 2 gb. So I archived the mails,
deleted the original files, and restarted evolution but this did not
work, nor did removing the account. So I just reinstalled evolution and
thats working now. Is there a fix yet?

Re: [Bug 534127] Re: BUG: Bad page state in process scp pfn:73ff9

2010-04-28 Thread david white
Jeremy,

This particular kernel oops hasn't recurred on my system for several
weeks, and since I use the system several hours every day for work it's
probably safe to say that the behavior/bug is no longer present. Feel
free to close the case.

 Hi david,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it
recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the
latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from
 http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal
(Applications-Accessories-Terminal). It will automatically gather and
attach updated debug information to this report.

 apport-collect -p linux 534127

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be
great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue.
 Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested
the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This
can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at
the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing'
text. Please let us know your results.

 Thanks in advance.

[This is an automated message. Apologies if it has reached you
inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

[Bug 534090] [NEW] description doesn't match behavior in default /etc/sudoers

2010-03-07 Thread david white
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: sudo

The default /etc/sudoers file in lucid contains the following
description and setting:

  # Allow members of group sudo to not need a password\n,
  # (Note that later entries override this, so you might need to
move\n,
  # it further down)\n,
  %sudo ALL=(ALL) ALL\n,

but this configuration still requires a passwd

should be
  %sudo ALL=NOPASSWD: ALL\n

or the comment should be changed to reflect the password-required
behavior.

(and yes, I moved the line to the end of the /etc/sudoers file so that
it wasn't overwritten by %admin)

The source of the bug is in the DEBIAN/postinstall script.
I also verified that the DEBIAN/postinstall script for 8.04.4 LTS has the
correct syntax.

[Bug 300802] [NEW] URL support broken or removed?

2008-11-21 Thread david white
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: eog

older versions supported HTTP URLs as [FILE...] argument

using eog v2.22.3 on ubuntu hardy (8.04.1)
 ~$ eog --version
GNOME eog 2.22.3

 ~$ eog http://chart.finance.yahoo.com/c/1y/m/mvl

displays the image (PNG file) as expected

using eog v2.24.1 on ubuntu intrepid (8.10)

 ~$ eog --version
GNOME eog 2.24.1
 ~$ eog http://chart.finance.yahoo.com/c/1y/m/mvl

this displays an error in the eog window:

   No images found in 'http://chart.finance.yahoo.com/c/1y/m/mvl'.

however

 ~$ wget http://chart.finance.yahoo.com/c/1y/m/mvl -O mvl.png
 ~$ eog mvl.png

works as expected

I verified that URLs pointing to jpg or gif images also fail, so it
appears to be a general problem with the URL scheme, and not an image
format problem.

Has URL support been removed or is it just broken? There's nothing in
the release notes indicating removal (but maybe I missed it).
