[Bug 255863] [NEW] cannot install yelp-dbgsym in Hardy Heron x64

2008-08-07 Thread marco.pallotta
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: yelp

After the last yelp update ( 2.22.1-0ubuntu2.8.04.2 amd64) I cannot
install yelp-dbgsym as the only version available from repos is
2.22.1-0ubuntu2.8.04.1) and " apt-get install yelp-
dbgsym=2.22.1-0ubuntu2.8.04.1" says (unfortunally my system has italian
language):

"
Lettura della lista dei pacchetti in corso... Fatto
Generazione dell'albero delle dipendenze in corso
Lettura delle informazioni di stato... Fatto

That is we have an inconsistency between the version of yelp and dbgsym.

[Bug 255871] [NEW] firefox 3 doesn´t load i mages from many websites

2008-08-07 Thread Cylon
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

I have been facing this problem since weeks , when I go to image.google.com and
search for something , I just get empty image holders and keep loading till
they timeout , same problem with many websites when I view same URL with
konqueror or opera , images load fine !
the workaround I use for ff3 to make it work is by using VPN connection or
loading the URL using a web proxy. clearing the cache doesn´t help much.

I am using Ubuntu 8.04 and FF 3.0.1 upgraded from within ubuntu.

[Bug 255838] Re: Laptop doesn't power off after shutdown on Toshiba Satellite SA40-211

2008-08-07 Thread Brian Murray
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description doesn't yet
have enough information.
Please include as attachments the following additional information, if you have
not already done so (please pay attention to lspci's additional options), as
required by the Ubuntu Kernel Team:
1. Please include the output of the command 'uname -a' in your next response.
It should be one, long line of text which includes the exact kernel version
you're running, as well as the CPU architecture.
2. Please run the command 'dmesg > dmesg.log' and attach the resulting file
'dmesg.log' to this bug report.
3. Please run the command 'sudo lspci -vvnn > lspci-vvnn.log' and attach the
resulting file 'lspci-vvnn.log' to this bug report.
4. Please run the command 'sudo dmidecode > dmidecode.log' and attach the
resulting file 'dmidecode.log' to this bug report.
For your reference, the full description of procedures for kernel-related bug
reports is available at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies . Thanks
in advance!

[Bug 254785] Re: I cannot close evolution during email download

2008-08-07 Thread marco.pallotta
@Pedro, I backtraced my evolution, with gdb, when I closed it during
email download (unfortunally you will see "no debugging symbols found"
as I cannot install yelp-dbgsym as sayd in bug 255863) but you can see
that the program exits normally after I close it. The issue is related
to the fact that, as I sayd, evolution while downloading email takes too
long to close (in my last test with gdb, with a GPRS connection, about
20-25 minutes).

I backtraced it also with strace (in this situation evolution closed in
2-3 minutes).

I think the issue is related to some operations that evolutions make
after you close it. These operations seems to be related to the specific
email that evolution was downloading when you close it: if this email is
too big it takes too long to close (and with a slow connection this
problem is very clear).

[Bug 255876] [NEW] Calc does not display inserted images which excel *does* display

2008-08-07 Thread Daniel
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org-calc

does not display

Open office does not display images in xls files which are displayed in

excel/browse_thread/thread/765fea90b36ced55/d14e6fa1f6e9e449?lnk=gst&q=image#d14e6fa1f6e9e449

it's because of the Esher layer issues.

That thread also has an example script to create such files (I've
uploaded the resulting xls file).

[Bug 255875] [NEW] second monitor resolution cannot be changed

2008-08-07 Thread Martin Vysny
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-radeon

I have the following setup: LVDS is my notebook display, VGA-0 is a LCD TV
connected via a regular VGA monitor cable, capable of displaying 1360x768. In
Gutsy, both outputs displayed contents of a single virtual screen (a kind of
cloned display, however technically it was not a clone because of different
resolutions).
In Intrepid, when X starts, resolution on both displays is set to 1024x768
(probably because it's the highest resolution both displays share). xrandr
--output LVDS --mode 1280x800 works as expected and sets the correct
resolution. xrandr --output VGA-0 --mode 1360x768 succeeds setting the
resolution in X (for example the gnome-panel is resized to the new resolution),
however the physical resolution on TV is not changed - it stays 1024x768,
displaying center of the virtual screen, discarding corner pixels.
The resolutions are both quite uncommon and share an interesting trait: x
resolution of VGA-0 is higher than of LVDS, however y resolution is lower. If I
remember correctly, the fglrx driver had similar problems with this setup - it
was unable to display higher resolution on the second display. There was a way
to circumvent this but I don't remember it anymore. However, the open-source
radeon driver had no problems at all (in Gutsy). When I tried xrandr --output
LVDS --off, it switched both displays off.
I don't know if this is related: I tried to play a movie and expected to see
the movie on LVDS and an empty blue rectangle on VGA-0. To my surprise, the
movie was shown on both displays! mplayer shown that xv is being used. When I
tried xvattr -a XV_CRTC -v 1, the video disappeared from both displays.

[Bug 255874] Re: [intrepid] OOPS with aufs/unionfs and NFS branch

2008-08-07 Thread Nick Ellery
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better.

Please include the following additional information, if you have not already
done so (pay attention to lspci's additional options), as required by the
Ubuntu Kernel Team:
1. Please include the output of the command "uname -a" in your next response.
It should be one, long line of text which includes the exact kernel version
you're running, as well as the CPU architecture.
2. Please run the command "dmesg > dmesg.log" after a fresh boot and attach the
resulting file "dmesg.log" to this bug report.
3. Please run the command "sudo lspci -vvnn > lspci-vvnn.log" and attach the
resulting file "lspci-vvnn.log" to this bug report.

For your reference, the full description of procedures for kernel-
related bug reports is available at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies Thanks in advance!

[Bug 223649] Re: torque-server init script fails during installation and removal

2008-08-07 Thread Ted Cabeen
If you want to fix it yourself, just create the following directories before
you install the package:
/var/lib/torque
/var/lib/torque/server_priv
/var/lib/torque/server_priv/jobs
/var/lib/torque/server_priv/queues
/var/lib/torque/server_priv/accounting.

On clients, you need the following:
/var/lib/torque/mom_priv
/var/lib/torque/mom_priv/jobs
/var/lib/torque/spool (with permissions 1777)
/var/lib/torque/undelivered (with permissions 1777)

Also, you'll need a /var/lib/torque/server_name file on your servers and
clients listing the torque server DNS name.

That's everything I have listed in my puppet config. Ideally all of
these should be put in the package.

[Bug 255008] Re: Up arrow key mapped to Print [screen]

2008-08-07 Thread Nick Colgan
CORRECTION: although switching to generic-evdev did fix the
HOME,PGUP,PGDN,END, left arrow, down arrow, and arrow keys, my right
arrow key is still not performing as expected. Pressing it switches one
workspace to the left. The "Keyboard Shortcuts" preferences seem to bind
the correct key sequence (Alt+CTRL+Right), so I don't know what is
causing this problem. Again, I have more information listed at bug
#255608.

Also, setxkbmap -print results:
xkb_keymap {
xkb_keycodes  { include "evdev+aliases(qwerty)" };
xkb_types { include "complete"  };
xkb_compat{ include "complete"  };
xkb_symbols   { include "pc+us+inet(evdev)" };
xkb_geometry  { include "pc(pc104)" };
};

Relevant xorg.conf info:

Identifier "Generic Keyboard"
Driver "kbd"
Option "XkbRules" "xorg"
Option "XkbModel" "pc105"
Option "XkbLayout" "us"

[Bug 214763] Re: Ubuntu 8.04 : after installing april 8/2008 updates, hard drive led never stops flashing and CPU consuption is VERY high

2008-08-07 Thread Rob
100% CPU and HD Usage For at least 3 Hours at a Time

My PC has an ASUS P5PE-VM motherboard with 495.3MiB RAM and Intel
Celeron D 3.33MHz. Kernel Linux 2.6.24-19-generic. Available disk space
140.3GiB.

I installed Hardy Heron (for the second time) on 01 July 2008. I
installed it from the LiveCD image in a clean partition on my hard
drive. I have downloaded and installed all updates and confirmed the
update lists regularly. My partitions are:

/dev/sda1 ext3 root partition 20.00 GiB Hardy: clean at install time
/dev/sda3 swap 2.00 GiB
/dev/sda4 ext3 unmounted 20.00 GiB for next Ubuntu LTS
/dev/sda2 ext3 /home 190.88 GiB contains my on-going /home

I set Swapon in Gparted, but every time I re-boot, I find that swap has
been reset to "off". How do I make it stay on?

THE PROBLEM

Every few days, I suddenly lose all control of my machine. The mouse
only responds about once every few seconds. All open application windows
grey-out. The disk starts hammering away. If I can manage to get the
mouse cursor to the upper tool bar to click on System, It takes 15 to 20
minutes for the System menu to open. Effectively, I have no control of
my computer. The problem can occur with or without applications running.
It appears to be independent of open applications. It can occur with no
applications running.

I mentioned this problem on Launchpad 16 July 2008 (bug 249123). At the
time, through a series of coincidences, I wrongly deduced that amule was
the culprit. I therefore decided to give Hardy a few weeks of soak
testing before making any further proclamation about the problem.

I have taken to opening the System Monitor every time I start a session
to try to catch the process that is occupying the CPU. However, the
rogue process offers so little time to other processes that the System
Monitor cannot never update its display. Apart from the monitor itself
occupying 3 to 4% of CPU time, all other processes are shown as sleeping
(0% CPU). This is not the true state of the system since the monitor's
display is frozen.

I have left the rogue process running for as much as 3 hours at a time,
but obviously, I do have work to do and so I have no option but to pull
the power cord and re-boot. After a re-boot, I notice that there is
always at least one orphaned inode. After a re-boot, I get a few hours
of use of my computer before the rogue process starts again. I have
never allowed the rogue process to go on for more than 3 hours because I
suspect that the process may be looping and would thus go on forever.

I suspected that it might be an indexer of some kind that was not
running "nice". I removed Tracker from my installation completely.
Tracker was not the culprit. Later, I suspected amule. I thought it may
be creating hashes of all the files on my hard drive. I disables amule.
Amule was not the culprit either.

The best guess I can come up with is that it may be something being run
by anacron. The process tries several times to re-run after I pull the
power cord and re-boot. It then leaves me in peace for a few days. A few
days later, it starts all over again. It does not seem to correspond to
any of the anacron time periods. However, this may be because, having
failed to complete on one occasion, it tries the same run again several
times.

The only remaining thought I can come up with is the size of my hard
drive, which is 250 GB with a home partition of 190.88GiB. Could one of
the indexers run by anacron be finding difficulty here. Also, since swap
gets switched off for some reason every time I re-boot, my system is
usually running without swap. Could this be a factor? Why does the
kernel scheduler permit a process to occupy the CPU so solidly?

I really have no idea what the rogue process is or what it does.
Nevertheless, it does, for all practical purposes render Hardy Heron, at
least for the time being, unusable as an operating system for serious
work.

Please could you shed any light on this issue.

Sincerely, Rob Morton

[Bug 253876] Re: intrepid 8.10 alpha3: Ubuntu is running in low-graphics mode

2008-08-07 Thread Jean-Baptiste Lallement
Your log files shows that you are running in safe mode i.e. vesa driver
in low resolution. It would greatly help to track down your problem if
you could provide the X log file with the radeonhd driver activated in
your configuration.

If you're using Intrepid then check that you've install the package
xserver-xorg-video-radeonhd and try to reconfigure x using "dpkg-
reconfigure xserver-xorg" or you can try envy-ng

Furthermore, there are some threads talking about it on ubuntuforums see
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=653093

It would also make sense to raise problems you are having in the support
tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu

[Bug 255882] [NEW] broadcom wireless mac address corrupted

2008-08-07 Thread Ted Armitage
Public bug reported:

First reported as a comment in bug #219775.
Thought to be an aspect of #124159 (slowness), but moving closer to router and
reducing speed to 5.5M did not solve it.
Wireless lan works erratically. Lots of transmission errors. Eventually it
dies and disappears from the list of wireless lans in network manager.
When I check my router it has my computer listed with a mac address of 00 00 00
1a 73 82 instead of 00 1a 73 82 68 cc.
Broadcom details:
03:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Corporation BCM94311MCG wlan
mini-PCI [14e4:4311] (rev 02)
Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company Unknown device [103c:1374]

Attached is log of what happens when I switch to wireless from wired.

keytouchd does crash randomly at startup for me. I didn't have apport
on, so can't get you guys a stack trace. All I get is the following in
the syslog:

8 rip 7fa02dee1dc2 rsp 7fff366e66d8 error 4

keytouchd appears as a defunct process with the x-session-manager as its
parent.

On hardy x86-64. Using keytouch 2.4.0 compiled from source. I'm gonna
try the newer 2.4.1 recently released and post again.

[Bug 255446] Re: please merge laptop-mode-tools 1.45-1 from Debian unstable main

2008-08-07 Thread Tormod Volden
For reference, here is the changelog entry:

 laptop-mode-tools (1.45-1ubuntu1) intrepid; urgency=low
 .
   [ Tormod Volden ]
   * Merge from debian unstable (LP: #255446), remaining changes:
 - etc/init.d/laptop-mode: Check if laptop mode is disabled in
/etc/default/laptop-mode (that's the file laptop_mode looks into, too,
but it incorrectly evaluates the ENABLE_LAPTOP_MODE setting) as well
   as in /etc/default/acpi-support.
 - usr/sbin/laptop_mode: Do not parse arguments, ignore "force" and
   let start/stop mean enable/disable.
 - /usr/sbin/laptop_mode: Do not read $ACTIVATE_WITH_POSSIBLE_DATA_LOSS
from /var/run/laptop-mode-state to see if state has changed.

[Bug 255876] Re: Calc does not display inserted images which excel *does* display

2008-08-07 Thread Daniel
I think this bug might be being tracked (and resolved) here:
http://qa.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=61786

And duplicate might be here:
http://qa.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=72606

However, the resolution is for OOo 3.1, which won't be released until March
2009. Can't we get a resolution that *doesn't* take 8 months?

[Bug 249340] Re: Gutsy->Hardy upgrade hangs in localedef

2008-08-07 Thread Martin Kealey
I'm a bit surprised that noone else seems to be considering how to *fix*
this problem. All I'm hearing are work-arounds for users, which is not
really adequate.

It's pretty clear that there's a kernel bug -- nothing else explains the
"unkillable processes" problem (which I can personally vouch for using
linux-image-2.6.22-15-generic). The only question is whether the kernel
bug is new, or whether something changed in localedef so that it now
triggers a bug that already existed.

I earlier mentioned that I suspected that this was related to kernel bug
#231746, which indicates that the problem is triggered by trying to
write a zero-length segment to a file -- either a malformed descriptor
for "writev" or a zero length for an ordinary "write".

However that bug report refers to linux-image-2.6.24-16-xen so I spent a
few hours last night looking through the diffs between 2.6.22-14 and
2.6.22-15 to see if there was a similar problem there. Well that part of
the kernel has had a bit of an overhaul between 2.6.22 and 2.6.24, and I
didn't come up with anything definitive.

I'll be looking at localedef when I get time. First up is running
localedef under "strace" -- but I'm not going to get onto it for a
while, so if someone else could do that and report what it's doing when
it stops that would be really helpful.
