[Bug 302026] Re: likewise-open prevents local passwords from being changed

2008-12-03 Thread Buddha

I should have said, everything seemed fine with local user access until today.

Today I did updates and installed vmware server, before I found I could
no longer log in using a local account.

Ubuntu 8.10/AMD64. Likewise Open was installed using the DEB from
likewise rather than the repository version.

Now I don't believe it is vmware that has caused the issue, more
probably the updates I received.

vmware is having its own issues of course due to a keyboard mapping
issue in Ubuntu but this seems to be a known bug with a workaround that
hopefully will work tomorrow when I am back at work.

I have now got access to root by adding my domain users group to the
sudoers file so I can manage.

Everything was good in 8.04. I just needed to change to 64 bit...

Let me know if you need more info and how to get it...

[Bug 284572] Re: smbclient crashed with SIGSEGV in strlen()

2008-12-03 Thread Thierry Carrez
The server name is apparently hidden in the server output ([R]).
It's a probably a separate issue from bug 286828, since it shows directly using
smbclient.

What happens if you try to mount the share (through /etc/fstab or
directly using nautilus) ?

Louis-Xavier:
The workaround in comment 2 was proposed to the original poster, since he owns

Your issue might be a bit different, since you get specific idmap errors in

[Bug 284572] Re: smbclient crashed with SIGSEGV in strlen()

2008-12-03 Thread Richard Wooding
Accessing directly through Nautilus fails, see bug 264943 (gvfsd-smb
crashed with SIGSEGV in strlen()), In very much the same way because
both seem to use libsmbclient.so.0 underneath.

The nautilus UI also crashes and sends you to your home directory. e.g.
if I type smb://192.168.1.106/video, it will start - crash - then the
nautilus view will become /home/richard

Mounting using this method does work:

sudo smbmount 192.168.1.102\\video video

I will attempt /etc/fstab when I get home (the notebook is used away
from the NAS, and then I connect in the evenings), but I predict it will
also work like the smbmount command.

I find the method of using Nautilus the most convenient way for me to
access this device.

data while this one has already 4 duplicates and seems to be the target

jelmer: What's the correct way to build a VFS module then? Complete
replacement for the samba package = that provides even worse security,
because a strict versioning at least warns the admin that something is
reeking.

samba-with-my-vfs-module OTOH would just get stuck at an unsafe version
without any automatic indication that something is broken.

[Bug 150649] [NEW] gutsy does not have a working apache+mysql authentication solution

2008-12-03 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug by Julien Rottenberg (jrottenberg):

Binary package hint: libapache2-mod-auth-mysql

As of Mon Oct 8 17:08:24 EEST 2007, there is no working solution to
authenticate with mysql from apache. This is a serious problem that
might hinder migration to gutsy in many sites.

I have to file this bug against two packages as there are two possible
solutions for mysql authentication, *neither of which work*:
1 [RECOMMENDED by Apache Foundation] mod_authn_dbd
(http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/mod/mod_authn_dbd.html) -- libapr1 doesn't
contain a mysql driver, being entirely unusable (see detailed report at bug
#150651)
2 [DEPRECATED] libapache2-mod-auth-mysql
doesn't honour the AuthBasicAuthoritative Off directive and doesn't work.
Details follow

Versions:
-
Updated Gutsy beta release.

apache2-mpm-prefork 2.2.4-3build1
libapache2-mod-auth-mysql4.3.9-4

Setup:
-

a2enmod auth_mysql

virtual host conf:
Location /mysqlauth
AuthName mysql-auth test
AuthType Basic

AuthBasicAuthoritative Off

AuthMySQL On
AuthMySQL_Authoritative On
AuthMySQL_DBapache_auth_test
AuthMySQL_User authtestuser
AuthMySQL_Password authtestpassword

AuthMySQL_Password_Tableauth
AuthMySQL_Username_Fieldusername
AuthMySQL_Password_Fieldpasswd
Auth_MySQL_Encryption_Types MySQL

# AuthUserFile/dev/null or /var/www/empty --
enabling this results in stack smashing
Require valid-user
/Location

db setup:
DROP database IF EXISTS apache_auth_test;

create database apache_auth_test;

use apache_auth_test;

create table auth ( username char(25) not null,
passwd char(25), primary key (username) );

insert into auth values ('somebody', PASSWORD('random'));

grant all privileges on apache_auth_test.* to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
identified by 'authtestpassword';

Result:
-
1. Without AuthUserFile directive:
[Mon Oct 08 20:58:18 2007] [error] Internal error: pcfg_openfile() called with
NULL filename
[Mon Oct 08 20:58:18 2007] [error] [client 213.35.160.166] (9)Bad file
descriptor: Could not open password file: (null)
*** stack smashing detected ***: /usr/sbin/apache2 terminated
[Mon Oct 08 20:58:18 2007] [notice] child pid 4834 exit signal Aborted (6)

2. With either
AuthUserFile directive that points to a empty file (e.g. /dev/null)
or
AuthUserFile directive that points to a htpasswd file that does not contain the
user name (e.g. trying with foo, but htapsswd file contains only bar):
*** stack smashing detected ***: /usr/sbin/apache2 terminated
[Mon Oct 08 16:57:05 2007] [notice] child pid 4250 exit signal Aborted (6)

3. With AuthUserFile directive that points to a htpasswd file that contains the
user name (e.g. trying with foo and htpasswd file contains foo):
authentication succeeds, but database authentication is ignored

Conclusion:
-

1. AuthBasicAuthoritative Off is not honoured,
2. 'stack smashing detected' looks like a serious bug in
libapache2-mod-auth-mysql.

Hi Onno,

I don't use exit 0 || exit $? because I would like to check all

checking the other daemons like ypbind

You do realise that most scripts are running under a set -e environment
and will terminate when the exit status is not 0, so, checking other
daemons will not actually happen in the way you think it will.

[Bug 249824] Re: [intrepid] IPv6 unusable

2008-12-03 Thread Manson Thomas
Hi Matt,

Thanks very very much for the backport to Intrepid, my life is getting better
now ;)

I've installed the patch on my production secondary DNS server and it
successfully solved the issue.

  One question :

I've you're patch repository in my /etc/apt/sources.list.
When the patch will be generally available on intrepedid, what are the
steps for me to return in the intrepid branch (without loosing the fix (or not
for too long time)) ?

  Thanks again,
Thomas.

[Bug 249824] Re: [intrepid] IPv6 unusable

2008-12-03 Thread Matt LaPlante
My package version containing a tilde (1:9.5.0.dfsg.P2-1ubuntu3~ppa3)
should work as a half-increment. It's higher than
1:9.5.0.dfsg.P2-1ubuntu2 (current), but should be lower than
1:9.5.0.dfsg.P2-1ubuntu3 (future/final). Assuming this version number
or higher will be used by the final push, it will automatically
supersede the ppa packages. Of course, you're also free to just remove
my ppa from your sources list at any point and install a specific
version via apt-get instead.

TK, this is not the problem, as I told earlier in this bug report the
size of the PCL output is smaller than 10 MB. And in addition, HP's

and the printer converst it to CMYK or CcMmYK. In addition, the big
temporary files occur also with the lj5gray driver, a driver for
monochrome laser printers.

The Ghostscript developers have done more investigation now and found
out which change exactly caused the big temporary files. So there is
really a bug in Ghostscript. Note that older Ghostscript releases worked
correctly.

[Bug 147464] Re: Heavy network activity (eg: torrent/nfs file transfers) causes Hard System Locks and/or Network Freezes.

2008-12-03 Thread Kunin
I have had this same issue since 7.10, currently on 8.04 and after
almost a year finally figured out that it always seems to hard lock when
I've got a ton of torrent activity. The up/down speed it locks on is
always different, so I'm thinking it has to do with the number of
connections present at the time and not the about of bandwidth being
used.

To be sure I have tested every piece of hardware, replacing my NIC (no
effect, except I upgraded so now I get even better speeds) and replaced
my PSU due to a slight fluctuation in one of the 5v rails (within
limits, but barely) which also had no effect. CPU, heat, RAM, HDs, etc
all tested fine. So this is definitely a Linux/Ubuntu issue.

My issues are exactly as above, seemingly random hard locks requiring
the use of the reset/power button. I cannot confirm cases of num
lock/caps lock/etc lights blinking as my wireless keyboard doesn't have
those lights.

Please fix this issue, it should be of a relatively high priority due to
the nature of the issue and the possible public (read non-Linux users
whom wish to try Ubuntu) assumptions that Ubuntu is not a stable OS. I
personally have fiber at home, and up until now (when I realized where
the issue is) I would happily leave any and all torrents running until
these was not a single peer left, having a constant 3-5Mbps (and higher)
upload going. I've tried other torrent clients (I prefer Azureus) with
the same resulting hard locks.

[Bug 304680] [NEW] Esperanto locale broken

2008-12-03 Thread dominiko
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libx11-data

The Esperanto locale is broken in Ubuntu Ubuntu-8.10 Intrepid. It was already
broken in
previous releases, I can't remember when the regression was introduced, but at
least
Ubuntu-8.04.1 was also affected. I initially reported this as comment in bug
#83142, but
in hindsight, it might be a different issue so I open this new bug.

When setting my locale to eo_XX.UTF-8, I noticed several bugs, at least those
3 problems:

* the compose key does not work at all.
* vim-7.1.314 from Ubuntu-8.10 crashed (segfault) when using X clipboard with
visual selection.
This bug is discussed in more details in vim mailing list, see:
   http://groups.google.com/group/vim_dev/browse_thread/thread/55612319d5c737ca
* gnome-terminal worked but xterm defaulted to C locale.

These 3 bugs only happen because eo_XX.UTF-8 locale in Ubuntu is broken.
Changing locale to en_US.UTF-8 or fr_FR.UTF-8 for example makes everything work.

It is easy to fix: I see that the Esperanto settings in files
/usr/share/X11/locale/locale.dir
and /usr/share/X11/locale/compose.dir are commented out (!?) Uncommenting them
resolves all 3 problems.

- Please uncomment those lines. I've been using it with the fix without
problems.

Ubuntu works fine with the eo_XX.UTF-8 uncommented out and it
fixes the 3 issues I described.

I think the only reasons those line were commented out is because
someone did check for non existing country codes and stumbled
upon XX.

But this change was incorrect, since it breaks havoc the Esperanto locale,
and it was probably not well reviewed, since the comment even included
a typo (*Esperato* instead of Esperanto)

The country code XX should be OK, see:

http://unicode.org/reports/tr35/tr35-6.html

... and search for territory_code, twice, and you will see that XX is a
code allowed for private use, which is the case, since Esperanto is a
language that doesn't necessary belong to a specific territory.

To quote the page: The private use codes from XA..XZ will never be
used by CLDR, and are thus safe for use for other purposes by
applications using CLDR data.

I see that Debian Lenny/sid also has the same bug.

But unlike Ubuntu or Debian, I see that in the file
/usr/share/X11/locale/locale.dir
on OpenSUSE-11.0 is fine: the Esperanto locale settings are *not* commented out.

Attached is the patched /usr/share/X11/locale/locale.dir and
/usr/share/X11/locale/compose.dir files. Please notice:

* esperanto setting uncommented
* some colon characters removed

The offending package should be libx11-data:

$ dpkg --search /usr/share/X11/locale/locale.dir
libx11-data: /usr/share/X11/locale/locale.dir

[Bug 304683] [NEW] no text input in flash forms when scim is active

2008-12-03 Thread Rolf Leggewie
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: scim

This may be related to bug 211193 (scim can't input chinese word in
flash).

Whenever scim is running (even in English keyboard mode), I cannot
enter any text at all in flash forms. Maybe you want to try for
yourself at
http://www.kirupa.com/developer/actionscript/flash_php_email.htm (some
random URL I googled for purpose of illustration).

I believe gdmflexiserver -n and virtualbox are also negatively
affected. The keyboard stops to work inside those apps, too, when scim
is running. I will verify this later.

[Bug 304688] [NEW] Using gnus with MS Exchange 2007 messes up seen/unseen messages

2008-12-03 Thread Ketil Malde
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnus

Using Gnus version 5.11+v0.5.dfsg-3ubuntu2 against MS Exchange 2007.

This mostly works, but every once in a while, a lot of previously read
email is marked unread. I've added (setq imap-log t) in my .gnus, and
from the information in *imap-log* (an example where this happens is
attached), I believe this is caused by Gnus issuing this command:

17 UID STORE
47474,3845:3848,3850:3870,3872:3874,3876:3892,3894:3895,3897:3905,3908:3916,3918:3922,3924,3926:3959,3961:3963,3965:3980,3982:3991,3994:3996,3998:4014,4016:4031,4034:4040,4042,4044:4045,4047:4053,4055:4056,4058:4125,4127:4156,4159:4177,4179:4195,4202:4203,4206,4208,4210:4213,4215:4220,4222:4227,4231:4232,4234:4267,4269:4288,4290:4335,4337:4361,4369:4380,4382,4384:4392,4394:4402,4404:4406,4408:4440,4442:4443,4445:4452,4454,4456:4458,4460:4470,4473:4491,4493:4521,4523,4525:4552,4554:4555,4557:4566,4568:4629,4631:4639,4641:4645,4647:4662,4664:4666,4670:4683,4685:4689,4691:4698,4700:4706,4708:4738,4740:4760,4763,4765:4768,4770:4773,4776:4777
-FLAGS (\Seen)

I'm not sure why this happens, and while there are reports of problems using
Gnus with Exchange, I'm unable to find anybody with this particular problem.

Gnus works perfectly against other servers (e.g. using dovecot).

[Bug 296167] Re: X.org will stop responding to mouse clicks on Ibex with Xinerama. Occurs frequently, Fatal Error.

2008-12-03 Thread stasheck
I'd also be grateful for xorg downgrade instruction :-)

I couldn't find anything about the issue on the 'net and I was feeling
kinda lonely. It happens to me also - sometimes after couple of hours,
sometimes minutes after X start.

I'm using Dell XPS M1330 w/ GF8400GS; using Xinerama because panel has
1280x800 res and external monitor (attached via HDMI) is 1680x1050,
TwinView don't like working on monitors of different res.

In my work, I use both Firefox and VirtualBox and as far my best
solution was to use only firefox in VB - no window switching, no bug -
but it's not the most comfortable solution.

The problem importance for me - it's critical.

[Bug 251031] Re: evolution 2.23.5 crashes on startup

2008-12-03 Thread bench
Had the same problem on Ibex and tried jsteinhart's ppa version,
but it works only partially. I have two mail accounts and works fine with one
account but not with the other.
When the Inbox on the problematic account is added to the Mailbox list on
Mail Notification Properties window in Gnome, Evolution dies and
an error message on the
Mail Notification Properties window appears
with unhandled Evolution mailbox(unable to contact Evolution).
Any help? Thanks

[Bug 144631] Re: xen guest hangs after mounting filesystem

2008-12-03 Thread Lionel Porcheron
Yes it is still required but: considering that xen-create-image (from
xen tools) now create the correct configuration that does not have to be
tweaked by hand (i.e. the workaround does not have to be applied by
hand) and that we do not ship dom0 anymore in intrepid, this bug is
probabily a Won't Fix

[Bug 248926] Re: autohidden Gnome-Panel(on the left/right side of the screen) won't unhide when Rotate Cube-Plugin is active

2008-12-03 Thread nicholas
Just thought I would post to say I can confirm this issue. I posted a
bug as well, then noticed this one. Mine has been marked as a
duplicate.

I am having an issue where my panel seems to not reappear after
autohide, this only happens if I am using the cube. If I disable the
cube then it starts to show properly again. Additionally, if I turn
autohide off, then I can get to the panel fine, however I do notice that
a right click seems to take two clicks.

Here is a video showing the issue:

[Bug 304690] [NEW] unexplained warning - incompatible stripping characters and condition

2008-12-03 Thread helix84
Public bug reported:

poedit, openoffice2 throw following warning multiple times when started
from command line on Slovak files:

warning: incompatible stripping characters and condition:
SFX

After googling I discovered also Firefox and other packages have this
problem, figured it has to do something with spellchecking, so I tracked
dependencies of poedit and found the message in hunspell-1.2.6 source
(poedit - libgtkspell0 - libenchant1c2a - libhunspell-1.2-0).

grep revels the message in following places:
enchant-1.4.2/src/myspell/affixmgr.cxx:HUNSPELL_WARNING(stderr,
warning: incompatible stripping characters and condition:\n%s\n, warnvar);
hunspell-1.2.6/NEWS:warning - incompatible stripping characters and condition:
hunspell-1.2.6/src/hunspell/affixmgr.cxx:HUNSPELL_WARNING(stderr,
warning: incompatible stripping characters and condition:\n%s\n, warnvar);

The problem is I don't know what to do with this warning, it's not
descriptive enough. hunspell-1.2.6/NEWS mentions errors in dictionaries
but I have no idea what to fix. More info please?

[Bug 275351] Re: slow boot on intel DG45ID

2008-12-03 Thread Mikko Rantalainen
I have done some correspondence with Intel and it seems that the
official response is that DG45ID is not (at least currently) supported
on Linux and Intel is not going to fix this issue. The fact that this
board works against the EHCI specification published by Intel
(http://www.intel.com/technology/usb/ehcispec.htm page 121 and page 122)
does not matter and all I was able to extract from Intel about this
issue was The link you provided does not relate specifically to this
board and it is just general information for EHCI Controller. The fact
that linux kernel tries very hard to follow that specification did not
matter.

So the end result is that either you compile your own kernel with
smaller timeout or try to get workaround for this issue in linux kernel
some other way. Do not expect Intel to help in any way. The other
response I got was We cannot provide further information on the BIOS
other than the information that is publicly available. I think this
means that Intel is not going to say how the EHCI hand-off is even
supposed to work!

[Bug 222597] Re: [Hardy] skipping sound in vlc

2008-12-03 Thread bitinerant
My `sudo lspci -vvnn` is also attached (system where .mp3 and .avi still
skip). I'll try to do the other testing soon.
