I can confirm this too on ubuntu 9.0.4 (64bit) with all updates (at time
of writing)

'sudo /etc/init.d/samba start' gives no error.

[Bug 330982] [NEW] old_passwords.cnf: No such file or directory

2009-02-18 Thread Martin Vysny
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mysql-server

2.6.24-19-server #1 SMP Wed Aug 20 18:43:06 UTC 2008 x86_64 GNU/Linux

I was unable to connect to a fresh install of mysql-server as the root
user didn't work without a password. I was not asked for the password in
the installation phase. So I tried sudo apt-get autoremove --purge

happened:

[Bug 330982] Re: old_passwords.cnf: No such file or directory

2009-02-18 Thread Martin Vysny
Okay, fix proposed by http://ohioloco.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=626443
worked. It was necessary to purge mysql-common (if you have a package which
depends on mysql-common then just sudo dpkg --purge --force-depends
mysql-common; sudo apt-get install -f . In my case, it was proftpd).
How to simulate the bug (probably): install proftpd, then install mysql-server
(it shouldn't prompt for a password), then purge mysql-server and try to
install it again.

[Bug 234302] Re: ipmitool console session crashed with SIGSEGV

2009-02-18 Thread James Gurney
Maybe I'm missing something, but why attempt to patch 1.8.8? Is there
some reason for not updating to 1.8.9 which has been available since
2007, and also fixes this problem? At least, it did for me, and the
changelog specifically says:

* Fix segfault in SOL when remote BMC does not return packet

.. which may or may not be the problem in this case - at any rate, it
fixed the segfaults I was seeing when doing SOL with 1.8.8. 1.8.10 has
also been available since August 2008.

[Bug 222761] Re: [SRU] upsd doesn't start NOT 221737

2009-02-18 Thread Steve Beattie
I reproduced the problem with the original version of nut in the hardy
release, 2.2.1-2.1ubuntu7, and confirmed that upgrading to the version
in hardy-proposed, 2.2.1-2.1ubuntu7.2, corrected this issue. I also
verified that things work properly when:

  - upgrading via 2.2.1-2.1ubuntu7 (release) - 2.2.1-2.1ubuntu7.1 (updates) -
2.2.1-2.1ubuntu7.2 (proposed)
  - installing 2.2.1-2.1ubuntu7.1 (updates) and upgrading to 2.2.1-2.1ubuntu7.2

  - freshly installing 2.2.1-2.1ubuntu7.2 (proposed)

Note that I (still) don't have a ups, so all I was able to verify was
that upsdrvctl started up enough to get to the point that it failed when
trying to talk to the (non-existent) serial device.

Thanks.

[Bug 277556] [NEW] should build kernel modules with dkms

2009-02-18 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug by Craig (candrews-integralblue):

Binary package hint: open-vm-tools

dkms will allow the kernel modules to be automagically recompiled when a
new kernel is installed, which is incredibly handy.

Right now, there's a many step process required (get the source, compile
the source, install the modules) every time the kernel is upgraded.

[Bug 277556] Re: should build kernel modules with dkms

2009-02-18 Thread Craig
With open-vm-tools the way it is now, if a kernel upgrade is performed
(as happens often with security upgrades), and you forget to re-compile
open-vm-sources, at next boot the system will have some major issues
(like networking doesn't come up). With automated security installs
(like I use), this means that whenever a reboot happens, there's a
decent chance the system won't come up. I think it would be worth while
to make DKMS work in this package to prevent these issues - I bet a lot
of sysadmin would love you for it :-)

[Bug 330353] Re: boot-up hangs at multiple stages

2009-02-18 Thread amanison
This is not just an Ubuntu issue. I have a HP Pavilion dv9500z, and this
problem during boot occurred with openSuse 11.1, and Centos 5.2 as well.
Somewhere between 2.6.18 and 2.6.24 the problem appeared, I think.
Something in the boot process is waiting for an event, and the keyboard
press supplies the kick. The fact that it seems to occur throughout the
first half of the boot may be significant, and it is a laptop issue.
Maybe, as noted above, it's a Compaq/HP issue. I also get the
Clocksource tsc unstable message, and the two issues seem to be
related.

[Bug 330910] [NEW] png generation fails when /var/log/bootchart does not exist

2009-02-18 Thread amedee
Public bug reported:

Release: I observed the problem in Intrepid and Jaunty.
Package (for Jaunty): bootchart (0.9-0ubuntu14)

When there is no /var/log/bootchart directory, bootchart fails to create a png
file inside this directory.
A possible condition for a non-existing /var/log/bootchart directory is when
/var/log is mounted as a tmpfs. This is a common configuration for netbooks
with a SSD. At each reboot, /var/log is wiped and of course the bootchart
subdirectory doesn't exist any more.

Suggested fix:
Add the following to /etc/init.d/stop-bootchart

 # Where we drop charts
 CHARTS=/var/log/bootchart
+mkdir -p $CHARTS

Alternative fix:

 # Where we drop charts
 CHARTS=/var/log/bootchart
+if [ ! -d $CHARTS ]; then
+mkdir -p $CHARTS
+fi

I leave it up to the package maintainer which of the two is the better solution.
It also doesn't matter when the directory is created, perhaps it is even better
to create it inside the start) case?
As long as it exists before java is called to create the png, it is ok.

I suppose that this problem also exists upstream.
Do I have to report it myself upstream, or will this be done automatically?

Only suggestions is that perhaps this is not the right place to publish
them, maybe a blog post is more appropriate.

Have fun with the benchmarking :)

2009/2/18 stat maibpen...@gmail.com

 HI:

I agree it isn't all that easy but since I have the machines to play around
with I am going to take my main machine (the one I am experiencing the
issues with and install Win 7 and then use the Richard's python script
(cross platform) as described on the site you linked to. It is pretty
 funny
since I had created an outline of what I was going to do from the very site
you mentioned, what are the odds. I already have just about everything put
together. The difference for me of course will be that I will be using my
8.1 install as is and will perform those tests first (excluding the install
tests) and then redoing them using Win 7 and the same hardware. I have all
the tools I need including using a couple of Aspire ones and a DNS-323 that
I will use to measure throughput externally. I believe that by following
what they did on Tuxradar, connecting some separate machine tests etc. I
should be able to get a true test and relatively close to the true picture
 of things.

Once it is done I will post somewhere (here?) my steps and what results I
got. If my plan is flawed let me know, I am open to listen and am hoping
 to
get this done this weekend (it's good to be a lonely geek :) Kind of
looking forward to this, despite the work it entails and the fact that I
will have to turn my xbmc box into a production machine temporarily :(

I agree! But it is imperative to perform a sound benchmarking, it is not

 why
should we see nearly that internal?

(I remember that I tried to boot from the clean 8.10 CD and mount the

[Bug 330917] [NEW] configure fails on every arch other than i386 and amd64

[Bug 330919] [NEW] Asus Eee PC 1000H support

With Kubuntu 8.10 these things doesn't work :
* Wireless
* Hotkeys (acpi_listen see all hotkey presses)
  * Instant Keys doesn't work (I can't assign any of these keys from System
Settings - Keyboard Mouse)
  * WiFi hotkey (nothing happens)
  * Fn+F7, Fn+F8, Fn+F9 doesn't works (Fn+F8 should switch between LCD/External
monitor but it's seen like the VolumeUP key and change the volume of the PCM
channel, but the OSD shows always 0% ad volume :P!)
  * Audio Hotkeys (mute, volume up, volume down) doesn't work
* Overclocking/Downclocking (For this I need eee-control + some kernel modules).

[Bug 330923] [NEW] [wubi 8.10] laptop integrated webcam always on

2009-02-18 Thread Bernard Drapeau
Public bug reported:

I run Ubuntu 8.10 (Wubi) on a Compaq cq-50-135-em laptop.

I boot Ubuntu on the machine and the camera is always on.

I tried with Linux generic 2.6.27-7, Linux generic 2.6.27-11, Linux
generic 2.6.27-12

The problem appeared when I upgraded to 2.6.27-11. I could turn the
webcam on and off demand before the upgrade. I don't know if the bug is
linked to the kernel or a library (v4l2?)

[Bug 252160] Re: Upgrade to Ubuntu 8.10 Alpha 3 stops Nvidia driver working

2009-02-18 Thread Jason
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 251832 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/251832

The bug this is a duplicate of, seems very vague, but this bug actually
demonstrated exactly what I'm experiencing:

sudo /etc/init.d/dkms_autoinstaller start
 * Running DKMS auto installation service for kernel 2.6.27-12-generic
 *  kqemu (1.3.0~pre11)...   [
FAIL]
 *  nvidia (177.82)...   [ FAIL
]
 *  vboxdrv (2.0.4)...   [FAIL
]
 *  virtualbox-ose-guest (2.0.4)...  [ FAIL
]

I upgraded my kernel from 2.6.27-11-generic to 2.6.27.11-generic. When I
attempted to build the kernel module manually with dkms, this is what
happened:

dkms build -m nvidia -v 177.82 -k 2.6.27-12-generic

Error! Your kernel source for kernel 2.6.27-12-generic cannot be found at
/lib/modules/2.6.27-12-generic/build or /lib/modules/2.6.27-12-generic/source.
You can use the --kernelsourcedir option to tell DKMS where it's located.

Looking at /lib/modules/2.6.27-12-generic/source gave me this:

ls /lib/modules/2.6.27-12-generic/
initrd modules.dep modules.ofmap modules.usbmap
kernel modules.ieee1394map modules.pcimapupdates
modules.alias modules.inputmap modules.seriomap volatile
modules.ccwmap modules.isapnpmapmodules.symbols

Question: is there a directory that exists that has the source so I can
build this manually? I used a solution from a forum the last time this
happened, only I don't exactly remember the solution. I'm sorry if I'm
wrong about this being a duplicate!

[Bug 330927] [NEW] Intrepid: OpenOffice.org does not generate ä letter correctly and conver ts existing ä letters to Per Mil (using MgOpen Cosmetica)

2009-02-18 Thread oss_test_launchpad
Public bug reported:

Test generated an OpenOffice.org Impress document using NeoOffice on
MacOSX and the MgOpen Cosmetica Font. Inserted the ä letter (Unicode
U+00E4). This was displayed ok.

Now testing with Ubuntu 8.10 64-Bit, OpenOffice.org 2.4.1 and ttf-mgopen
1.1-3, trying to insert new text into the existing document, again using
the letter ä, Ubuntu inserts the Per mil symbol instead, but only in
some slides. Also, in some slides, ä letters that have been displayed
correctly in the past are displayed as Per mil now, too.

Strangely enough, when I copy this symbol from that faultily displayed
Impress document and paste it here, it becomes ä, just as it should be
displayed in OpenOffice.org.

In some of the test slides this error does not occur. I can see no
system in when it occurs and when it does not.

Note that there has been an issue with this character in connection with
this font but I thought this was fixed
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ttf-mgopen/+bug/120209).

[Bug 324469] Re: package xterm 235-1ubuntu1.1 failed to install/upgrade: package xterm is not ready for configuration

2009-02-18 Thread Michael Vogt
Thanks Sgop for the log.

If the system is still in this state, could you please attach
/var/lib/dpkg/status and then run sudo dpkg --configure -a and sudo
apt-get install -f and attach the output. If it is not, could you
please attach your /var/log/apt/term.log ? Maybe it contains more
traces.

It looks like xterm is in trigger-awaited state at this point and then
it gets called with dpkg --configure. Knowning what trigger is pending
would help me.

Thanks,
 Michael

[Bug 282655] Re: Changing volume with laptop key shortcuts and focus on second X screen causes short term crash

2009-02-18 Thread aefaradien
Hi there, i was going to report this bug also, then found it had already
been reported. So are a few more details.

- This only happens when i have metacity compositing enabled.
- I am also running 2 xscreens and getting the same issue.
- The attached screen shot shows before and just after i press the volume up
key when i have the second screen active (top half of screen shot is before,
bottom half is after).
- This does not happen when i have the first screen active.
- No volume level popup appears when i am on the second screen. (it appears
as expected on the first screen).
- This effect is completely reproducible - i can turn compositing on and off in
gconf-editor and see the issue start and stop.
- I am using hardy with restricted nvidia drivers.

i am happy to answers any further questions you may have and test fixes.

work. Using the Open Source driver, the laptop consumes about 38W, while
it worked under Intrepid with about 15W using the Closed Source driver.

[Bug 330931] [NEW] Obsolete, remove from main and ubuntu-desktop

2009-02-18 Thread Timo Jyrinki
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-spell

The last user of gnome-spell, Evolution, migrated already to enchant.
Therefore there is no use for gnome-spell to be in main or a dependency
of ubuntu-desktop. There is also gtkspell that can be used (which, in
turn, uses libenchant).

** Affects: gnome-spell (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided

[Bug 330930] [NEW] package the amazon ec2-api-tools

2009-02-18 Thread Martin Pool
Public bug reported:

It would be nice if Ubuntu packaged the Amazon EC2 API tools
http://developer.amazonwebservices.com/connect/entry.jspa?externalID=368categoryID=88.

They depend on a java jre and work with openjdk-6.

They are non-free but under a licence http://aws.amazon.com/asl/ that
seems on brief scanning to allow multiverse type distribution.

Ubuntu already has the ec2-ami-tools which I think are under the same
licence.

2009-02-18 Thread Matt Zimmerman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

My symptoms are similar to the old bug 139145. Since sometime in
Jaunty, my Run a terminal shortcut (currently F7) simply doesn't work.
The keystroke is passed through to the focused application. I've tried
changing the key binding, with no effect. If I switch to metacity with
metacity --replace, it works fine.
